The American Writers Museum celebrates the past, promotes the present and inspires the future of writing in the United States. We are proud to welcome these authors to our new monthly Tuesday First Books series, which highlights the first books of promising emerging and established writers.
Lee Cuddy is seventeen years old and on the run. Betrayed by her family after taking the fall for a friend, Lee finds refuge in a cooperative of runaways holed up in an abandoned building they call the Crystal Castle. AWM Partners with Story Street Labs
We are excited to announce that the AWM has partnered with
Story Street Labs
to capture and publish stories written by museum visitors in our
Story of the Day
exhibit. In this interactive space, visitors can try their hand at writing, after being inspired by our nation's great writers and their works. Visitors can write on laptops, vintage typewriters, or with pencil and paper. The online
Story of the Day
allows visitors to create a collaborative story based on different prompts. The daily story is written and expanded on by visitors who choose to add to it throughout the day. Stories are compiled and published daily by Story Street Labs at

AWM Welcomes 5 New Affiliates!
Paul Laurence Dunbar House - Dayton, OH
Paul Laurence Dunbar, the first internationally acclaimed African American poet, was born in 1872 to former slaves. He published over 400 poems, several full-length novels, plays, short stories, and lyrics for musicals.
Dunbar purchased the house for his mother in 1904 and completed his last works there before dying at age 33.
The House looks much as it did when he lived there. Learn more.
Hamlin Garland Homestead - West Salem, WI
Hamlin Garland purchased this house for his parents and spent four or five months a year in the house. His life in the Wisconsin frontier influenced his writings which described the hardships and difficulties of pioneer life as well as the social practices of rural Wisconsin. Garland was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for best biography in 1921. Learn more.
Laura (Riding) Jackson House - Vero Beach, FL
The home was constructed around 1910, when Indian River County was a wilderness. Laura Riding was a widely noted poet of the 20th century, was educated at Cornell University and became the only female member of the southern literary group, "The Fugitives." She received the prestigious Bollingen Prize for her poetry in 1991. With her husband, Schuyler Jackson, she settled in Florida where they raised citrus organically.

Harriet Beecher Stowe House - Cincinnati, OH
Harriet Beecher Stowe lived in this house from 1832-36 with her family until her marriage to Calvin Stowe. Because the Beecher family assisted freedom seekers while living here, the house is also a recognized site on the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom. After moving back east, Stowe wrote
Uncle Tom's Cabin based on her experiences in Cincinnati

The John Updike Childhood Home - Shillington, PA
John Updike was born in 1932 and lived in this house with his parents and maternal grandparents until 1945. The house has been undergoing extensive restoration under the auspices of the John Updike Society and will at the completion of the work be opened to the public as a museum. Learn more.
