The American Library Association Hosts Annual Benefit at the AWM

Hundreds of librarians gathered at the Museum on June 23 for the annual ALA Benefit supporting the Cultural Communities Fund. Poet Nikki Giovanni surprised attendees with special advance copies of her upcoming book
A Good Cry: What We Learn From Tears and Laughter (Morrow, scheduled for release October 2017), which she then signed. To read more about this exciting event, see Library Journal's excellent article.

The AWM would like to thank Ms. Giovanni for visiting the Museum and making one of our first hosted events such a success.   Click here to learn how to host your next event at the Museum.

Calling All Book Clubs!

Is your book club looking for their next read? The American Writers Museum suggests The Readymade Thief by Augustus Rose. Read the book together and then come hear the author at our Tuesday First Book series.

September 5: Tuesday First Books: Augustus Rose: The Readymade Thief
The American Writers Museum celebrates the past, promotes the present and inspires the future of writing in the United States. We are proud to welcome these authors to our new monthly Tuesday First Books series, which highlights the first books of promising emerging and established writers.

Lee Cuddy is seventeen years old and on the run. Betrayed by her family after taking the fall for a friend, Lee finds refuge in a cooperative of runaways holed up in an abandoned building they call the Crystal Castle. But the façade of the Castle conceals a far more sinister agenda, one hatched by a society of fanatical men set on decoding a series of powerful secrets hidden in plain sight. And they believe Lee holds the key to it all.

A novel of puzzles, conspiracies, secret societies, urban exploration, art history, and a singular, indomitable heroine, The Readymade Thief heralds the arrival of a spellbinding and original new talent in fiction.

Copies of the book will be sold at AWM before and after the reading.

September 5, 5 p.m. Readers Hall. General Public. Free with museum admission or $5 suggested donation for event only .

AWM Partners with Story Street Labs

We are excited to announce that the AWM has partnered with  Story Street Labs to capture and publish stories written by museum visitors in our  Story of the Day exhibit.  In this interactive space, visitors can try their hand at writing, after being inspired by our nation's great writers and their works. Visitors can write on laptops, vintage typewriters, or with pencil and paper. The online Story of the Day allows visitors to create a collaborative story based on different prompts. The daily story is written and expanded on by visitors who choose to add to it throughout the day. Stories are compiled and published daily by Story Street Labs at  awm.storystreetlabs.com .
