Board Selects Fox Architects and SWT

for Master Plan Design

The Transport Museum Association Board of Directors hired Fox Architects and SWT for Master Planning Services and Design. Design and planning consideration will include: Context Analysis: site and overall access within region; Museum Collections; Topography; Property and Easements; Traffic - long-term access and circulation; Infrastructure and Utilities; Existing Buildings and Facilities; Revenue Enhancements; Wayfinding; and Natural Resources.

The planning process is estimated to take fifteen weeks.

The Power to Move You!

In conjunction with the implementation of a Museum of Transportation Master Plan, the Transport Museum Association Board of Directors will embark on The Power to Move You Capital Campaign with a fundraising emphasis on education, preservation, restoration, and exhibition. Four priority projects have been defined in this campaign. Priority projects include: completion of The William R. and Laura Rand Orthwein Education & Visitor Center; construction of an on-site artifact storage facility; completion of an open-air pavilion protecting rail artifacts; and the addition of a trolley loading platform at The Earl C. Lindburg Automobile Center.

Advisory Panels Determined

As the Museum of Transportation embarks on significant change over the next few years, the staff assembled advisory panels in the following four areas: rail, trolley, automobile, and library & archives.

The panel members are recognized as progressive, highly knowledgeable in their field, and those who truly want the Museum of Transportation to prosper. They will work with and guide staff in decisions related to artifact acquisition, de-accession, future planning and exhibit concepts.

Artifact of the month

On a hot summer day, we thought it would be cool to feature the Union Pacific Snow Plow.

Designed and built by the Union Pacific Railroad in its Omaha Shop, the Museum rotary snow plow is the heaviest ever built weighing 367,400 pounds. (That's the same as 62 African Elephants!)

It's cutting wheel could throw snow far to either side of the track as it was pushed forward at four to six mph. It is not self propelled and must be pushed by three or four locomotives.

A steam generator heats the carburetor, prevents the fuel and water pipes from freezing and thaws out the cutting wheel if it gets stuck. The plow engineer controls both the plow and the trailing locomotives. The circular windows in the front of this plow revolve to keep them clear from snow.
