Sermon:   "Siri, Alexa, God and an   Old Prayer "

Scripture Lesson:   Matthew 6:7-15

This Sunday I'll be doing interviews about where we find our answers.  It will involve a few questions asked of some of our more profound alternative intelligences; resources like Siri, Alexa, and maybe one or two others.  They can help us with our lists, goals, and even motivation.  They can give us answers to questions, choose our music for us, and can even give us step by step directions so that we can find our destination.  More than any time in human history we seem to count on these kinds of devices to "simplify" our lives.  How many times have I offered to give directions only to be told, "No need.  I have GPS"!  The question, can they help simplify our understanding of our faith?  In the past couple of weeks I've asked them to help me search for God, the teachings of Jesus, and even more specifically about the right way to pray.  You may be surprised by the answers.  I was.  So, this Sunday we'll be focusing on prayer, particularly as we head into the middle of August and begin to look at the fall.  So, to prepare, please read Matthew 6:7-15 as we explore just how much we can find in scripture, and even in prayer beyond Alexa and Siri, or even our GPS.

MINISTRY NEWS
Help Move Furniture
August 13
On Sunday, August 13, between services (about 10:00am), please help move furniture in/out of the preschool classrooms so we can clean the carpets and wax the floors.  Contacts are Dave Carver and Dorothy Beeman.
Back to School Blessing
August 27
For all children, teachers, and other school/district staff who are going back to school, we will offer a blessing during Children's Time in worship on August 27.  Children who wish to bring their backpacks or notebooks to Children's time on August 27 are welcome to do so for the blessing.  Kindergartners and preschoolers are also welcome to participate.  This is also a great day to bring a friend!
Only One Worship Service
Sunday, September 3
Just a reminder, on Sunday, September 30 there will be only one worship service at 10:00am due to the Labor Day holiday.
New Banners
The new banners in the sanctuary emphasize Alders-gate's continuing growth in FAITH, LOVE, HEALTH and SERVICE. They were designed and made by Norma Line and Bill Ferguson and the cost covered by the Flower Committee. We hope you like them.
Thank You Garnet!
For almost 10 years Garnet Ormsby has served as a regular office volunteer coming to church every Monday morning to help with clerical jobs.  She processes the attendance forms, prepares the children's clipboards, tidies the sanctuary, stuffs envelopes, etc. She has been so faithful and helpful.  We have been truly blessed by her hard work and dedication.  Garnet will retire from her position at the end of September.
Regular Office Help Needed
We are in need of another regular office volunteer since Garnet is retiring from the position at the end of September.  This volunteer is needed on Mondays (preferably) or Tuesdays to help for two hours.  The duties could be split between a couple people and involves:
  1. Log the Sunday headcount, process the attendance forms and tally up the names of people who have signed up for activities
  2. Archive the Sunday bulletin and inserts
  3. Prepare the children's clipboards
  4. Tidy up the sanctuary and narthex, stock prayer cards and offering envelopes, straighten hymnals
  5. Help with occasional tasks like stuffing envelopes
We'd like the volunteer to start in September when Garnet is around to help with training.  If you have questions, or think you might be interested in doing part or all of these duties, please contact Wendi in the church office, [email protected].
Ushers Needed
The first service is in need of more ushers to add to the usher rotation.  Basically an usher comes to church 15-20 minutes early, greets people, hands out the Sunday bulletin, lights the altar candles, does a headcount, collects the offering, assists visitors, and tidies up the sanctuary after the service. Youth and adults are welcome to serve as ushers.  With enough volunteers, usher serve every 6-8 weeks.  If you are interested in serving as an 1st service usher, please contact David James ([email protected], 425-643-2970)
Kitchen Range Hood
Are you renovating your kitchen? The church has a very nice stainless steel residential kitchen range hood for sale for a donation.  It is a 48-inch Broan Elite 61000 series, model #614804 and is practically brand-new. The church is upgrading to a commercial kitchen range hood to meet the requirements of the bigger ovens.  If you are interested, contact Rich Detering or Dave Carver.
Resource Library News
Please check your personal bookshelves for any church library books you borrowed but may have forgotten to fill out its checkout card!  This is because a recent inventory shows that 12 books are missing from the library, as listed here .    If you find one, please return it to the in-basket, located above the library laptop.

MISSION & OUTREACH
Jubilee Reach Service Day
 August 26
We look ahead to another opportunity to serve our local community.  The 13th annual Jubilee Reach Service Day is coming up on August 26th.  It is an opportunity for those of us in a church to assist a school and its teachers in preparing their classrooms for the upcoming year.  We have partnered with Puesta del Sol, the Spanish language school that sits just behind Tyee Middle School.  In other words, it's our neighbor just down the street.  We can choose whether we work in the morning (8:00am-12:00pm) or afternoon (1:00-5:00pm) or both.  Our tasks will be to assist teachers in their classrooms.  Volunteers will be asked to decorate classrooms, organize supplies, create bulletin boards, get desks ready, sort curriculum sheets, and anything else needed by the teacher.  There are no age restrictions, easy access for everyone, and it will be fun and fulfilling.  It's a great opportunity to be in service with a neighbor.  Please sign up!
Crossroads Dinner Update
At the July dinner we fed 63 people including about 15 children.  The numbers have been generally increasing but this is the most we have served for some time.  We gave away all the food we brought except a few cookies and a little milk.  Thank you to all who donated food and served.  Know that your generosity was very much appreciated by those we served.  If you are interested in helping with the Crossroads Dinner program, contact Dave Maybee or Melinda Lilley.
