Our studio doors will be closed
August 6 through September 4 as we get away for a refreshing summer break. While we're away, please
email us with any questions that you may have.
Attention students: Please clear your shelves at the end of your class semester and take your clay if you want it, or leave it to be recycled.
Here's our calendar for the months of July, August, and early September:
July
July 20-23: Open 10:00 am to 2:00 pm during Art Fair. At other hours, call to find out if the studio is open.
July 29: Last fired works of summer can be picked from today until 6:00 pm on August 5.
August
August 1: Last day for students to glaze their work for firing.
August 5: Student work glazed by August 1 will be available for pickup until 6:00 pm today.
August 6: Studio and gallery will be closed until
September 5.
Note: The studio will be available for use by unlimited community studio members during the month of August (except on August 12-13).
* To accommodate our studio residents we will extend your monthly membership by two days.
August 12-13: RnR Ceramics workshop with Kristen Swanson. Studio will be open to workshop participants only.

*Advanced and intermediate students are eligible to purchase a monthly unlimited studio membership for August. You must purchase the membership by
August 5. The term of the membership runs for 30 plus two days.
September

Coffee and Clay: Yes, you can make beautiful and useful ceramic vessels off the wheel. Let teacher Nancy Bulkley show you how in this 6-week Saturday morning hand building class for everyone from beginner to advanced student. Begins September 16. Early Bird Discount deadline:

Introductory and Continuing Wheel: A friendly 6-week introduction to wheel throwing with teachers Nancy Bulkley, Kevan O. Wilson, and Kay Yourist. Choose a Monday evening,Thursday afternoon, or Thursday evening class to get started on the wheel or develop your skills. Monday class begins on September 18, Thursday classes on September 14. Advanced and Intermediate Clay: This 14-week Tuesday evening class with master potter Alex Pratt will present fun and challenging skill building projects for both intermediate and advanced wheel throwers and hand builders. Class begins September 12. Enroll soon! Early Bird Discount deadline:

Studio calendar
Collect your June bisqueware now
If you have bisqueware remaining on the shelves from June, be sure to pick it up by July 31. To keep our shelves free for new work, we regularly discard unclaimed bisqueware at the end of the month following the month in which the bisqueware was fired. Be sure to collect your bisqueware promptly.
Ready, load, fire: cone 10
There will be two gas kiln firings in July.
Here is the tentative schedule for them:
Loading: Tuesday, July 11
Firing: Wednesday, July 12
Unloading: Friday, July 14
Loading: Sunday, July 16
Firing: Monday, July 17
Unloading: Wednesday, July 19
Be aware that this schedule
could change depending on the amount of work that's ready for firing.
Tool time is on vacation . . .
. . . and will return tanned, rested, and ready to go in September.

Finland 100:
The Cranbrook Connection
This exhibition examines the "profound influence" Finland "has had on the development of the arts in America." Of particular interest to potters are the works of Maija Grotell, former visiting artist and head of ceramics at Cranbrook. John Glick reminisced here about his days as a student of Grotell.
Visitors to this exhibition will also see treasures by Eliel Saarinen, his wife Loja, and his children, Eero and Pipsan, as well as other Finnish artists associated with Cranbrook. Get more information about the exhibition here.

A beautiful collection of intricately detailed and carefully constructed houses by Olga Stowers is showcased in this exhibition. You may have marveled at some of Olga's houses as they were under construction here at the studio.
Although Olga, who was born in Siberia and raised in Moscow, has a degree in finance, she says that she has always been drawn to art. Olga took up ceramics a mere three years ago here in Ann Arbor. As shown in this collection, she especially enjoys making houses and buildings.

The Shifting Circus: Drawing & Sculpture by Thom Bohnert
Thom Bohnert, an award winning artist from Michigan, is showing drawings and sculptures that "range from lyrical to poetic, playing with tension and balance in a kind of whimsical theatrical arena." Bohnert's work is included in the collections of the Minneapolis Art Institute and Detroit Institute of the Arts.

Kristen Swanson to lead RnR workshop on August 12-13
This 2-day, hands-on workshop is tailored for intermediate to advanced ceramicists experienced on the pottery wheel. During the workshop participants will create several thrown pieces and have the opportunity to explore surface techniques using sgraffito and slip trailing.
Swanson says of her work that "I enjoy manipulating the elements of line, pattern and color to achieve a surface that is both controlled and spontaneous, graphic and soft." You can see a gallery of her pieces

Peek-a-boo clay layers
What happens when you layer clay of different colors and then carve through it? This 6-1/2 minute video featuring the carving of potter
Sean Forest Roberts will show you. There's no narration, but the images clearly demonstrate what's going on. Roberts says he's "deeply fascinated by the underlying randomness in the patterns and structures of nature."

The Great Pottery Throw Down
?
The four remaining potters get a final opportunity to make a case for themselves by whipping up a 12-piece porcelain tea set with a teapot, four cups, four saucers, a sugar bowl, milk pitcher, and cake stand, and do it all in four hours. Whew!
They must also conquer a spot challenge known as "The Devil's Work." Hmmm, that sounds intriguing.
