July 2017 Edition

ABRI/Homes for the Brave concluded our fiscal year with a strong sprint to the finish and we are so grateful for the dedication of our staff, the commitment of our Board of Directors and the amazing friendship of our supporters. I would like to personally thank and recognize our Chief Operating Officer and Clinical Director John Porto as he retires. John has played such a huge role in every aspect of this organization since its inception and he will be greatly missed.

As he concludes his two years as Chairman of our Board of Directors, Mike Dolan has provided remarkable guidance to myself and Homes for the Brave during a time of transition and we are delighted that he will continue to serve on our Board. We look forward to a robust start to the new year and a very exciting month of activities for our residents in July.

Announcing COO John Porto's Retirement

It is with sincere gratitude and appreciation that ABRI staff, board, residents and friends celebrate the retirement of John Porto.

ABRI/Homes For The Brave said farewell to a man who has been with the organization since shortly after it was just an idea in 1998. John Porto stood there as the doors to the agency opened on July 15, 2002 and has remained loyally involved in its development and operation for 19 years. This past month marked the end of his journey as Chief Operating Officer and Clinical Director but the beginning of a new chapter, his Floridian retirement.

"I'm looking forward to retirement but I have been here since its inception, so it's an emotional departure," said John when asked about his future plans. He has been a leader, friend, ally and source of strength to not only the staff but to each and every resident he has helped along the way. Interacting with all of these interesting, kind and strong individuals is definitely one of the aspects he'll miss most. "It has been a pleasure and an honor to be involved with over 1,100 residents who have passed through these doors," an emotional John shared.

Leaving an organization that has been a part of his life for 19 years is bound to be full of mixed emotions. Despite this bittersweet departure, John is confident in the people he is leaving behind. "I am leaving the company in good hands that will continue the great work we have been doing since 2002," he said.

John Porto has touched every life he encountered through this agency, the staff and residents alike. The vision he and Joy Kiss, retired CEO, shared of a "home first - program second", will be carried on through the staff he leaves to continue the work.

Program Highlights
Success Stories: Moving Out and Moving On

Every day, people come and go in our lives. Many leave lasting impressions and we'll never forget them. Such is life at Homes for the Brave and Female Soldiers: Forgotten Heroes as residents develop their skills, become employed and find sustainable housing. This month, several  became gainfully employed and successfully completed the program and moved out and on to their new housing!

Several Veterans received suits, ties and shoes from Save-A-Suit to help prepare them for job interviews! They were in awe of not only the donation but of the graciousness, kindness and compassion of the staff who took the time to help them find the right fit in order to look their best.

Partnerships
Partners & Friends Enjoy R&R with Residents

Summer finally arrived and with it the barbecues, games and conversations that are bringing residents together and helping our partners learn more about the services we provide. The support we receive from these partnerships helps us reach our goal  that all homeless men and women, primarily Veterans, entering transitional programs are able to achieve their personal goals and leave the program with a stable source of income, safe housing and a commitment to their own self-determination goals. Visits with partners also s how our residents the level of support they have outside of the organization. Thanks to everyone who serves meals, conducts supply drives, raises funds or helps in all of the other capacities required to make our programs successful for our residents and our community.

Building Community
Hearts of Hope

Hearts of Hope is a nationwide organization with chapters in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Virginia, Washington and Connecticut. As part of their mission, they are dedicated to "paying it forward" through healing arts, educational workshops and compassionate outreach to those in need.

At Christmas, the Stratford chapter presented each female Veteran at Female Soldiers: Forgotten Heroes with a painted ceramic heart and an individualized message of hope created by a local volunteer. Several of the women responded to their individualized message but as a group the women felt the desire to give back and "pay it forward." For the past two months the women have been decorating hearts with paint, marker and pen. The women felt that decorating the hearts decreased stress, was a way to express themselves and was relaxing. The hearts were presented at the closing ceremony at the Special Olympics on June 11th. Currently, the women are continuing to decorate ceramic hearts that will be presented at a Relay for Life event during the summer.
