In Remembrance of Rosemary Green

Jim and Rosemary Green have definitely left their mark on Northwestern Illinois District. Their music, spirit filled services and enthusiasm at Camp Meeting and revivals across the globe will be remembered for many years to come.

At the age of 11, Rosemary had displayed unusual skills playing the piano, and was asked to become the regular pianist at the church of the Nazarene in Canton. Soon, her aunt and uncle, Wilmer "Bud" and Wilma Raker, formed the "Raker Twins" evangelistic team and immediately asked Rosemary to accompany them in a revival meeting being held in Flint, IL. Two summers later, when Rosemary was 13, she received an invitation to play the piano in the nightly services being held by 5 evangelists at a Friends church in Dayton, Ohio. While there, a local newspaper reporter came to the church to do an interview. The interview, along with her photo, appeared in the paper the next day.

When Rosemary was a junior in high school, serious illness struck, and she was unable to return for classes for an extended period of time. The following summer, Wilma Raker, began scheduling revival services independently of the "Raker Twins", and invited Rosemary to join her as the pianist. For the next two and a half years, Rosemary traveled with Wilma playing for the revival meetings. At the end of that time, Rosemary felt she should return to school and finish her high school degree. She enrolled at the high school of Olivet Nazarene College, located in Bourbonnais, IL as a "special student" and finished the class work and received her high school diploma.

Rosemary met Jim Green, a music major and future husband, in the rotunda of the College Administration building in the fall of 1945. Rosemary had been one of the regular pianists for the chapel services at Olivet, so Jim asked if she would accompany him for a solo he was to doing in chapel that evening. She agreed, and that began a relationship which resulted in engagement (1946) and marriage August, 30, 1946.

Upon graduation from Olivet, Jim accepted the position of Minister of Music at First Church of the Nazarene in Louisville, KY. For two years, he and Rosemary held that position. In 1948, they made the decision to become full-time song evangelists in the in the Church of the Nazarene denomination. Because of Rosemary's exceptional musical talents, and Jim's unusual ability to lead choirs, they quickly became sought after by local churches, districts, and camp meeting gatherings in the 85 denominational districts in the U.S and Canada. Due to their rising popularity, invitations came from international gatherings in the Caribbean, Philippines, New Zealand, Africa, and others. The highlight of ministry came when Jim and Rosemary were asked to lead the worship music for the quadrennial meetings of the Church of the Nazarenes. These gatherings draw upwards of 30,000 delegates and guests from around the world. The Greens held the unique position of being involved with the music in these gatherings for over 30 years.

In the mid 1990's, they returned to their home in Canton to retire. But, retirement was not to be just yet. The First Church of the Nazarene in Canton asked Jim to become their Minister of Music, and Rosemary to become the regular pianist (where she had begun her career). During that time, they also became involved in community organizations. Jim became director of the Canton Civic Singers, and Rosemary became the pianist. Rosemary also was asked to accompany the Kitchen Band. In the fall of 2005, Jim and Rosemary were chosen, due to their unusual career, as Parade Marshalls in the Canton Friendship Festival Parade. In 2007, they were honored by the First Church of the Nazarene in Canton, for 60 consecutive years of music ministry in the Church of the Nazarene denomination.

Teen Camp

"Teen Camp 2017 was incredible. The theme was Below the Surface and we truly did go deep to the core of our souls. Through 4 speakers in the week we learned to Identify- We are children of God first and foremost and everything we are flows out of this identity. We Occupy- God has called us to ministry in whatever occupation we find ourselves in. Express- to sanctify our expression- making sure that everything that flows out of us, however we express, is expressed through Christ. Participate- to go, be, and do. RIGHT NOW. Follow God's voice out into the world and show them Christ. Through camp we had 2 - first time salvations, 59 - re-commitments to Christ, 48 - sanctification experiences, 39 - prayer victories, 29 - calls to ministry, 21 - calls to missions. God is faithful. Praise the Lord for all He does." Charlotte More - Teen Camp Director

NMI with the collaboration of NYI and SDMI has been trying to compile a list of children and youth who have expressed a call into ministry. The goal of NMI's Ministry Call is to educate, inform and guide those children and youth called into ministry get as much help in following through with those calls. Being able to pray for them by name and introducing them to opportunities to develop in their particular area of ministry.

Sunday School Discipleship International

"Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age."   Matthew 28:19-20

As you are going,
THINK BIG: Every relationship, every interaction, all inclusive.

And make disciples,
START SMALL: You. Be one. Be a Christ-like disciple. Re-present Jesus.

Baptizing them, immersing them in Jesus,
GO DEEP: Pray. Empty yourself. Sacrifice.

Freedom Sunday

Over the past three years, more than 400 Nazarene congregations around the world have participated in Freedom Sunday, a day set aside for prayer, worship, and support around the crisis of human trafficking, which enslaves as many as 45.8 million people globally, according to the  2016
Global Slavery Index.

This year, Nazarene churches are encouraged to participate in Freedom Sunday on September 24, 2017, the last Sunday of that month.

The Church of the Nazarene's participation in Freedom Sunday began in 2014 in coordination with other denominations within the Wesleyan Holiness Connection (formerly Wesleyan Holiness Consortium). That same year, the Church of the Nazarene's Board of General Superintendents endorsed the Declaration for Freedom, a document drafted by the Wesleyan-Holiness leaders, including Nazarene representatives.

In the past, Freedom Sunday took place on the first Sunday of Lent. This year, the event was moved to the last Sunday of September to enable churches that plan traditional Lenten services to participate.

Congregations are encouraged to plan a Freedom Sunday at any time that works in their calendar. Freedom Sunday planning resources are available as free downloads through Nazarene Compassionate Ministries at ncm.org/freedomsunday.

Scott & Anne Whalen
Scott Whalen has accepted the Assistant District Superintendent position on the Chicago Central District. Scott served as the Associate pastor at Peoria First. He served on the District Board of Ministry, District Student Registrar, Studies Secretary and served at many district events. Anne served as the District Children's Ministry Director. We wish him and his family well as he starts his new position. Scott and Anne will be greatly missed.

Issac Escobar
Pastor Isaac Escobar was at Crossbridge Community Church for three years.  He was the Campus Pastor at the Crossbridge Peru Campus.  Since he was 18 years old, he felt a call to be an Army chaplain.  Isaac was a chaplain candidate in the Army National Guard while at Crossbridge.  In September of 2016, he was reviewed by the chaplaincy board for Active Duty Army Chaplaincy and he was one of two candidates chosen.  Isaac's last Sunday was July 16, and he reports to Fort Hood, Texas on August 8. Isaac stated, "I will be a better chaplain because of what I was given at Crossbridge.  You have made me a better Jesus follower."  Please be praying for Pastor Isaac, Rachel, Naomi and A.J. as they begin this next chapter on their journey and they continue to lead people into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ.
Jeremy McLaughlin - Sterling First
For the past 5 ½ years I've served as the Lead Pastor of Hope Community Church of the Nazarene in Green Bay, WI. We have seen the Lord do some amazing things over this time including planting 4 new churches here in Green Bay, two of which have been led by lay people and not pastors.

After graduating from Ball State University with a degree in Sport Management, I worked in the position of Executive Director of the Toledo Golf Association in Ohio. From there, I felt a call to ministry. I have a M.A. in Christian Education from Northwest Nazarene and have served in Maine, Indiana, Wisconsin, and Texas.

I am very passionate about helping folks who are currently part of the church, find their purpose and make a connection between their passions and fulfilling the Great Commission! I also love to connect with people who don't know Christ and help them see how Jesus can make a difference in their lives.

While fulfilling my call to ministry is great, it's not my greatest passion. That spot belongs to my family. I have been married to my awesome wife, Rebekah for 15 years. We have 4 children: Cabot (13) who loves music and sports, Ainsley (9) who loves crafts and making new friends, Tate (7) Mr. Personality who is all boy, and Ruby (2) who is sweet and sassy. In my free time, I enjoy playing golf, watching Murder She Wrote re-runs, tinkering with re-purposing furniture and eating pizza.

We have seen the Lord do "exceedingly more" than we could've imagined in our family and in our ministry. We look forward to this next chapter of ministry and are once again coming with an expectation that God is going to do what only He can do!

Morgan Koyl - Sterling First
Hello everyone! My name is Morgan Koyl, and I am the new youth pastor at  Sterling First Church of the Nazarene. I grew up on the Michigan district and attended Sparta First Church of the Nazarene. My husband Shiloh also grew up on the Michigan district and attended Eaton Rapids First Church of the Nazarene. We met when we attended junior high camp together at Indian Lake Nazarene Campground in 2008. I went to Olivet Nazarene University and studied Christian Education with an emphasis in youth ministry. My husband and I just got married in June and moved down to Sterling right after we got back from our honeymoon. Since moving we have dove head first into ministry at Sterling Naz, with my first day in the office being the day after I moved. A few weeks later taking a week to be at Teen Camp as a counselor. Its been a crazy past month but I have been so thankful for a good church and new district family for embracing me and my husband. We can't wait to meet all of you soon!
Seth & Tai Major - Bridgeway
Seth and Tai Major were married in June of 2015. They met while attending Olivet Nazarene University, where Seth earned a B.S. in Mass Communication ('13) and a M.A. in Christian Ministry ('15), and Tai earned a B.S. in Elementary Education ('15). Before arriving to the NWIL District, Seth and Tai lived, served and worked on the Chicago Central District- Seth as a youth pastor, associate pastor, and substitute teacher, and Tai as an elementary school teacher. This Fall, Seth will be entering into the Church Plant Leadership Residency program at Bridgeway Community Church (Pekin, IL & Marquette Heights, IL), and Tai will be teaching in Peoria School District 150. Their move to the NWIL District marks an important step in their call to plant a new Kingdom-impacting church, and they plan to do so, prayerfully, in the Fall of 2019 in Peoria, IL.
Duane Brush - Roseville
Duane served as a senior pastor in Colorado and Missouri. He is an editor for WordAction Adult Curriculum for Nazarene Publishing House. Duane grew up in Quincy, IL and graduated from Olivet Nazarene University with a Bachelors of Theology degree. He completed graduate work at Nazarene Theological Seminary and a Doctor of Ministry degree from Gordon Conwell Theological Seminary. Duane has been married to his wife Nora since 1971.
Bob Hisler - Freeport

As a teenager, raised in the church, I felt a draw toward pastoral ministry but felt I had no real call as I understood it at that time. I asked the council of my father and my pastor, and they both encouraged me to seek the Lord in all I do and He would make my calling clear.

I was married with two children and teaching high school English when God clearly called me into the pastoral and preaching ministry. I had earned a BA and MA from Pasadena Nazarene College (Now Point Loma Nazarene University) and with a wife and two small children moved to Kansas City where I attended Nazarene Theological Seminary. During my seminary days I pastored a small community church for two years. After graduation in 1977 with an MDiv, I accepted a call from the Lancaster Valley View Church of the Nazarene on the Los Angeles District. After 12 years there I accepted a call to the Camarillo Church of the Nazarene also on the Los Angeles District where we stayed for 26 years. During my 38 years of ministry in Los Angeles I served on the Camps Board, the District Advisory Board, the Ministerial Credentialing Board and the Sunday School and Discipleship Board. I volunteered as a Hospital Chaplain both in Lancaster and Camarillo. I was employed by Marketplace Chaplains for six years during which time I gave from 2 hours per week to 2 hours per month in this ministry.

My wife, DeAnn, and I retired from the Camarillo Church in February of 2015. We then moved to Lewiston, Idaho where our daughter, Julie, and her family live. Our oldest son and his family live in the Seattle area where Robert works for Nordstorms in their corporate offices. Our two youngest sons, Peter and Tony, adopted during our pastoral transition to Camarillo, both live in California.

DeAnn and I are excited about the possibilities of serving churches through the ministry of Transitional Interim Pastors Services. We love the Church, the Body of Christ, and feel called to serve the Church of Jesus Christ in any way possible. Our first assignment turned out to be at the Grangeville Church of the Nazarene in Grangeville, Idaho just 72 miles from our home in Lewiston.
