Among the many facets of the Rhode Island budget bill that was signed into law by Governor Gina Raimondo, was a provision to raise the minimum wage from its current $9.60 per hour level to $10.10 per hour effective January 1, 2018. As a result of this raise, the sub-minimum wage levels afforded to minors will also change as the rate for full-time students under the age of 19 will rise from $8.64 per hour to $9.09 per hour (90% of the applicable minimum wage) and the sub-minimum wage for 14 and 15 year olds will rise from $7.20 per hour to $7.58 per hour (75% of the applicable minimum wage).
The budget bill provides a further increase in 2019; raising it from the 2018 $10.10 level to $10.50 per hour effective January 1, 2019.
