REFLECTIONS FROM FR. RICK

Living Signs of Love

I've been greatly influenced and inspired by Henri Nouwen. Henri was a scholar who left academic posts at Harvard, Yale and Notre Dame to work with people with severe intellectual and physical disabilities. He writes, "In a world so torn apart by rivalry, anger, and hatred, we have the privileged vocation to be living signs of a love that can bridge all divisions and heal all wounds."

Do you see yourself as a "living sign of love?" I wonder if people in College Park experience St. Michael's as a "living sign of love." Nouwen claims that Jesus' whole life was a witness to His Father's love, and Jesus calls His followers to carry on that witness in His Name. Thus we are not first of all judged by what we say but by what we live. When people say of us: "See how they love one another," they catch a glimpse of the Kingdom of God that Jesus announced and are drawn to it as by a magnet.

God has given St. Michael's a privileged vocation -- to be a "living sign of love" in our community -- and we are responding: Cooking and serving up to 400 warm meals each week for those in need; boxing food to help feed elderly couples living on limited income; collecting socks to heat over 5,000 cold feet; distributing backpacks loaded with school supplies to children; combating childhood hunger by collecting food for hundreds of food-insecure students each week; and opening the door of the heart of St. Michael's with our new Children's and Family Service beginning this September.

May others catch a glimpse of God's Kingdom through us and be drawn to God's love like a magnet!

In Christ's love,

Wherever you are on your spiritual journey, we welcome and accept you, and we trust God to take you where God wants you in God's timing.  We want to be a safe place for you to experience God's grace, love, and presence with us. Welcome home, Beloved.

The Quest is a challenge to accept the invitation. In this six-week excursion with Jesus, Beth Moore uses questions from Scripture to lead you into intimacy with the One who knows you best. Let the crooked punctuation mark be the map that points you into a closer relationship with the Father.
  • Learn to pray to promote intimacy with God.
  • Explore questions and responses from the Bible.
  • Track your quest by journaling along the way.
  • Learn to read and respond to Scripture.

21 St. Michael's Saints Attend Soul in the City

The Light In Ourselves Shining On Others
By Linda Midkiff

When my week as a chaperone for Soul in the City ended, Mike Beam kindly asked if I could write about my experience. I realize it wasn't only procrastination keeping me from writing this, it was that I just couldn't find the right words.

Fr. Rick talks about the "veil lifting." As he said in last Sunday's sermon "It's not about explaining the experience. It's about allowing the experience to change us." This came as a huge sigh of relief because I can't really explain what happened that week in Lakeland. Sure, I can explain what we did. We painted houses for the elderly. We cleaned food pantries for outreach kitchens. We picked up trash around lakes. We cleared fields overgrown with weeds and brush. But I can't explain the feeling, the "transfiguration." I can't explain the tears I had when I saw our youth locking arms swaying to songs about Jesus each night, other than it was the Holy Spirit moving us all...moving through each of us during serving and worship, during games, during meals. The Holy Spirit rushed my heart as I watched our youth break down the stereotypes and look beyond size and shapes and color of each other -- obstacles for most any group of people but especially poignant in a group of teens delicately navigating their social circles.

At the end of the week we shared with each other some highlights of our week. One of our own youth spoke of taking the time to listen to a homeless man. Just listening and being present with him. She said "It's the light in others that shows us the light in ourselves."  We not only shined during our week in Soul in the City, we shined our light on others.
