History and Waterfront Unite

The new stone garden bench was placed in front of The Sanctuary this week as part of our Waterfront Beautification project. Stop by to take a look and read about its unique history on the accompanying plaque.

Here is more about it . . .

by Henrietta Huff, with compliments to the Belin Centennial Team, and the Belin Gardeners

Where History, Waterfront Beautification ,
and the Belin Memorial Centennial Join Hands

The morning of Friday, August 4, began as just another rainy day until my telephone rang. Jason Alston, of Artwork Masonry, was calling to say they were ready to install our stone garden bench. My spirits escalated immediately! Finally, a proper place for a precious piece of our history would be placed in the beautiful new garden in front of The Sanctuary. The stone represents more than just our history. This very special stone had been used as one of three steps for Saint John the Evangelist Chapel at Wachesaw, which was constructed high on a bluff overlooking the Waccamaw River from 1854-1857.  Although the chapel was abandoned following the war, the three stones came to serve as the steps to the original Sanctuary of Belin Memorial when it was brought from Oatland Plantation in Pawleys Island. In 1994 when the original Sanctuary was moved to become Joseph B. Bethea UMC, the three stones were disbursed: one returned to Wachesaw Plantation where it rests near Kimbels Restaurant, another to the Hermitage, home to Ann and Joe Chandler, and the third resided in the Belin Cemetery until 2002, when it was moved to a pathway in the Belin Memorial Garden. The stone had no special notation or explanation, it was just resting there - until now.

With the wonderful donations from Easter, there is finally a proper place where its story is told for all to see. It may seem a long way off, but as we look forward to our Centennial in 2025, the Centennial Team is already planning. Getting this very valuable piece of our past situated in a place of honor with a plaque telling its story is a milestone that we have reached. I would like to express our gratitude to all who were instrumental in preserving it and assisted in our efforts to make our campus a more beautiful place!

2018 BOI T-Shirt Design
2018 Blessing of the Inlet T-Shirt designs, concepts, pictures, and ideas are needed for next year's Blessing of the Inlet t-shirt.

You DO NOT have to be an artist to make a contribution! We have a graphic artist who will help create the final design. The theme for 2018 is "Love God - Love Others," based off of Ephesians 4:32 which says "and be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ has forgiven you."

Please send your submission to [email protected] or to [email protected] by October 1, 2017. The Blessing of the Inlet Committee will review all ideas and select one for next year's t-shirt. Be creative! Let's hear from you!
