In the beginning... Stories from the Book of Genesis Summer Sermon Series
This summer in worship we are hearing stories from the book of Genesis. From creation to the extraordinary lives of the forefathers and foremothers of our faith tradition, these stories not only reveal to us who God is, but who we are as God's children, called to faithfully serve God and one another even as we care for the world around us.

will leave for Sunday School following a Time for Young Disciples.
While children of all ages are welcome in worship, a nursery for infants through children pre-kindergarten age is available, opening at 9:30 am. You may ask the ushers for directions.

Music Notes: Nanette Canfield in Worship
Soprano and Cleveland native Nanette Canfield has extensive experience studying and performing music from a wide variety of genres including opera and music theatre, oratorio, sacred music, art song, and chamber music. She has appeared in recital, concert, and theatrical venues throughout the Great Lakes region, and has created roles in several world premier productions in the U.S. and Canada. Invited appearances range from a program of classic American music theatre with the Sinfonia Baltica in Poland to an afternoon of Victorian parlor music at the historic Stan Hywet Hall in Akron. Nanette is proud to have served the Church of the Covenant as soprano section leader and soloist for 20+ years. When she is not making music, you might find her gardening, reading, or serving as a volunteer naturalist in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

This week guest Carillonneur Patrick Macoska is performing "A European Sampler," including a variety of classical and folk music from the Continent and the British Isles, from Bach's time to ours.
Native Clevelander Patrick Macoska has lived in Michigan until recently, where he had careers in architecture and church music. He studied carillon at the University of Michigan and played his GCNA (Guild of Carillonneurs in North America) advancement recital in 1997 at the University of Kansas. Patrick has been active in the Guild, serving two terms on the Board of Directors and currently serving as Chairperson of the Examinations Committee. He has given carillon concerts throughout the U. S. and Canada, most recently playing guest recitals at the Peace Tower on Parliament Hill in Ottawa and at L'Oratoire St. Joseph in Montreal. Until his move back to Cleveland, he played weekly recitals on the two carillons at the University of Michigan as well as on the 51-bell Paccard carillon at St. Mary's of Redford Church in Detroit, where he served as director of music. He is happy to be back in his home town and looks forward to becoming involved in the Cleveland carillon scene!
Through August George Leggiero and guests play a concert on Fridays at 12:15 pm and repeat that concert at 11:00 am Sunday morning. The tower is open to visitors; children should be accompanied by an adult. Programs are available on the lawn. Explore the area around the tower and find your "special spot" to hear the bells. Pray for those impacted by gun violence
Since a gunman opened fire at Sandy Hook Elementary School on December 14, 2012,
killing 26 people, 20 of them children; 800 people
in Cuyahoga County have been killed by guns. Since last month, 11 more individuals have died by gun violence in Cuyahoga County. Four of those who died were by suicide.
Believing God calls us to be peacemakers, by Session action, each month we pray for people affected by gun violence and to reduce the evil of gun violence in our nation, marked by the tolling of the tower bell. Join us, in this time of increased concern over deadly gun violence in our county, our country, and the world, in remembering and praying that God will show us the way to a new commitment to Peace on Earth.
The Church of the Covenant partners with God Before Guns, a multi-faith coalition of individuals and faith communities created in the wake of the shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School, to reduce gun violence. Go to

Y-Haven seeks help creating hospitality kits for Rising Hope, its new opioid recovery facility.
Please bring items by Thursday, August 17.
Rising Hope, new recovery housing program for individuals in recovery from opioid addiction, is in need of household items to help furnish forty, two-person suites, each with its own kitchen and bath. The Ministry of Service is collecting new or gently used items for delivery August 18. For further information, contact Barb Clint at 216-385-5114 or bclint@clevelandymca.org.

On Wednesday, August 23, the Church of the Covenant will host an event on behalf of Preterm, a local healthcare provider. Dr. Willie Parker, a Christian physician and abortion provider in the South, will speak about his recently published book
Life's Work: A Moral Argument for Choice.

In conjunction with Dr. Parker's lecture, the session requested that we hold an adult forum on this topic. Please join Nancy Starner, Director of Development and Communications for Preterm, and Cindy Szafraniec, Preterm's Chief Financial Officer and a long-time Covenant member, for a forum on Sunday, August 20 at 11:30 am. Nancy and Cindy will share information about Preterm's work and Cindy will talk about how her faith informs and has been informed by her work with Preterm.
