| Beautify Neighborhood Streets
The Portland Bureau of Transportation, in partnership with Design+Culture Lab, will host three informational workshops to assist community groups interested in applying for the Portland in the Streets Community Grant Program.
The Portland in the Streets Community Grant program will support creative community projects to make neighborhood streets, sidewalks and trails safer, more beautiful and open to all. Portland community and neighborhood groups are eligible to apply for up to $20,000 to finance their initiatives. A total of $100,000 in grant money will be available. Celebrate community and connect with their neighbors; promote safety education and new infrastructure in vulnerable communities; and support innovative ideas and projects.
Portland in the Streets Community Grant Applications are due Thursday, August 31, 2017 by 5:00 PM. Applications can be submitted via mail, email (please email pbotcommunitygrant@portlandoregon.gov), or in person at the PBOT office, 1120 SW 5th Ave, Suite 800, Portland, OR 97204. |

Code Reconciliation Project Update - Discussion Draft Comment on proposed code changes to align zoning regulations and other City codes with several recently adopted zoning amendments. The code amendments, which include changes to Title 33 (Zoning), Title 11 (Trees), Title 18 (Noise Control), and Title 32 (Signs), are primarily technical fixes, but also include a few minor policy issues and changes to development allowances. codereconciliation@portlandoregon.gov

Host a student from France, Spain, or Japan for 2 - 4 weeks in August, or September and build connections across the world through friendship!
The international students are coming to share cultures, practice English, and become part of an American family. Some students will be taking English classes from 9am to 5pm, M-F, at Portland State. While others will be immersed in their host families' daily lives and will not have any scheduled program obligations. Students bring their own spending money and are covered by comprehensive medical and accident insurance. Families receive orientation materials, 24/7 support, and a small hosting stipend. A new web-based version of PDX Reporter has been launched that replaces the existing iPhone and Android app. PDX Reporter allows you to report graffiti and certain livability concerns in Portland.

Friends of Laurelhurst Park contribute to the health and beauty of Laurelhurst Park.
This upcoming work parties are 9:00 to noon on the second Wednesday of each month through October. Those who wish to participate may mark their calendars for September 13 And October 11. | They Need Your Help!
Report concerns about work zone violations using the website PDXReporter.org and a work zone request will be created for PBOT staff to review.
Last week, the Portland Bureau of Transportation fined two contractors who blocked the public right of way without a permit or in violation of a permit. The blockages cause more traffic congestion during the busy summer construction season.

Every summer, we also hear about thefts from yards, garages and balconies. When gardening and working outside, people often take breaks leaving garages open and tools and other items out and unattended. Thieves may not be targeting a residence in particular, but steal things that can be easily taken with little risk of being caught. Even though some of the reminders below may not be convenient, please do what you can to reduce vulnerabilities to these types of crimes.
If you are not able to monitor a particular area: * Lock up ladders and other items that can be used to climb and reach vulnerable windows and access points. * Close garage doors, lock doors and gates, and secure open windows with track or other secondary locks. We occasionally hear about thieves entering unlocked side doors through garages and stealing purses, wallets and phones stored near entryways. * Secure tools, equipment, bicycles, electronics and other devices. Many bicycles are stolen from open garages, balconies, sides of homes and sheds that have minimal security. Tools can be used to pry open doors and windows. * Secure air conditioner units on accessible windows. * Install locks on gates to your backyard.
Neighbors who know each other, communicate and watch out for each other can help make the community safer.
* Get to know your neighbors. The more you know the neighbors living on your street and the routines of the neighborhood, the more readily you can identify suspicious activity. * If your neighbors forget to close their garage door, please let them know. * Inform neighbors that you will be out of town even for a weekend getaway, so that they can keep an eye out for your home during your trip. * Provide your contact info for emergencies and communicate who will be visiting your home while you are away. This way neighbors can determine if there is a problem at your place and call the police when necessary. * Help a neighbor out by picking up newspapers, packages and mail if they forget to cancel service and taking circulars off doorknobs. Roll their garbage and recycling bins out to the curb for trash collection and back following service. Since most burglars target homes that are unoccupied, these efforts will help conceal your neighbor's absence. | Extended until Friday, August 11th
Due to Portland's poor air quality from forest fires and extreme heat conditions, garbage, recycling and compost companies will extend early start times for their daily collection routes for one more week, through Friday, Aug. 11, 2017.
Allowing truck drivers to start garbage collection in the cooler morning hours reduces exposure to potential health risks. The City asks that residential customers set out their garbage, recycling and composting roll carts the night before their collection day, as trucks may be out earlier than the usual 6 a.m. start time. Residential customers should contact their garbage and recycling company or the City of Portland's Curbside Hotline, 503-823-7202, with any questions or concerns.

Please be sure to adequately water trees that were planted within the past 3 years. Young trees need your help during the hot, dry summer months- especially when temperatures soar.
Here are some tips: * In general, young trees need about 10 -15 gallons of water/week * Set out a hose 1-2 feet from the tree and water slow and deep (pro-tip: time the flow of water as you fill a gallon jug or a 5 gallon water bucket to estimate gallons/minute);
OR * Drill a couple of holes near the bottom of a 5-gallon bucket, fill with water and place near the base of the tree (not too close to the trunk) and repeat 2 more times; OR * Water with a gator bag (check local nursery or online)
