Since 2010 we have been proudly painting our intersection at 24th & N.E. Everett. An opportunity for all residents and businesses in the neighborhood to participate in the project and to get to know your neighbors! Help to build relationships between neighbors, paint the street KNA logo to strengthen the neighborhood identity and create a sense of place within the large urban setting. The Kerns Neighborhood Picnic committee needs volunteers to help make our annual event great!!! There is a Kerns Picnic Planning Meeting this Thursday July 13, 2017 6:30-7:30PM outside of the restaurants on the corner of 24th & Glisan! It's going to be a lot of fun and your help matters A LOT!!!! It takes a village to present our wonderful Kerns Neighborhood Picnic. There will be live music, BBQ, games and a raffle for prizes donated from local businesses. Host a student from France, Spain, or Japan for 2 - 4 weeks in July, August, or September and build connections across the world through friendship!
The international students are coming to share cultures, practice English, and become part of an American family. Some students will be taking English classes from 9am to 5pm, M-F, at Portland State. While others will be immersed in their host families' daily lives and will not have any scheduled program obligations. Students bring their own spending money and are covered by comprehensive medical and accident insurance. Families receive orientation materials, 24/7 support, and a small hosting stipend. A new web-based version of PDX Reporter has been launched that replaces the existing iPhone and Android app. PDX Reporter allows you to report graffiti and certain livability concerns in Portland.

Upcoming Season Work Parties! 
Friends of Laurelhurst Park contribute to the health and beauty of Laurelhurst Park.
This upcoming work parties are 9:00 to noon on the second Wednesday of each month through October. Those who wish to participate may mark their calendars for July 12, August 9, September 13 And October 11. Three remaining Saturday dates include Sept 23 and Oct 28, from 9 to noon. Questions or concerns may be addressed to Peggy Glascock (503-232-2406) or Barry Kast (503-477-7469). Here are some updates on Laurelhurst Park: There are lots of people at the park again. Come on down for a picnic or to throw the frisbee. It is summer and the dog off-leash area (DOLA) has changed from the south lawn to the west gully. It is drier, but there are some wet spots still. On July 12th, some youth volunteers will rake the sticks in that area, and Parks will re-seed the lawn. The bigger problem is that soil has covered the drains so they don't drain anymore. Parks will be finding these drains soon, which will aide in draining out the winter's storms. Staffing has been reduced since last winter, and staff is moving around some still, but it sounds like Laurelhurst and the South Zone will retain the third horticulturist. Bids close next week, so hopefully soon there will be a bigger presence at Laurelhurst Park with horticultural work getting done. There is no Parke Diem this year, so we will not have an October Friday work party for that. It was fun to meet all the new volunteers, and the event brings new people to other work parties. But the Parks Foundation is re-grouping and trying to figure out a better way to find volunteers, raise awareness about parks issues, and advocate to people in Portland about what a wonderful resource the Park system is. The park is looking a little rough in places. We are going to be weeding and pruning at our next few work parties. Hope to see you at the Ankeny Building at 9 am on August 9. (That is where SE Ankeny meets SE Laurelhurst Place.) We have the tools, but you might want to bring gloves that fit, and wear good "work" shoes or sneakers. See You Then! |

SE Uplift's partner coalition, Northeast Coalition of Neighborhoods, will be beginning a new project that works on improving the safety and cleanliness of designated areas of inner NE and inner SE Portland.
The project, Clean Start PDX, is based on the Downtown Clean and Safe program developed by Central City Concern. They will concentrate on individuals that have been impacted by homelessness, poverty, or addictions receive vocational training, a living wage, access to services, and case management. The new program will provide litter pickup, biohazard disposal, and graffiti removal to the NE areas of areas of Eliot and half of Lloyd and in the SE about a third of Central Eastside, including parts of the Kerns and Buckman neighborhoods. |

The old one story healthcare building on NE 28th and Everett was demolished and in it's place a 119 unit condo building with no parking is planned. the original plans were for a 72 unit building with parking.
Parking is extremely limited in the Kerns neighborhood, and people use cars to get to the amenities. It is a bike and walking friendly area and people use cars to get to the amenities. Retail will attract even more visitors with more cars. Currently code does not require parking, but the permit office recommends that people write to the mayor's office as code can be and sometimes is changed. Hate crimes are on the rise in Portland. Hate Crimes are also known as Biased Crimes. Under Oregon law, a hate crime occurs when one person intentionally subjects another to offensive physical contact, threatens or inflicts physical injury, or threatens or causes damage to the property of another person because of their race, color, religion, sexual orientation, disability, gender identity, or national origin.
What You Can Do Get Informed & Intervene * Starting July 11th, Don't Shoot Portland is hosting a series of bystander intervention trainings * Race Talks is holding an event on July 11th on protecting yourself physically and emotionally in trying times * On July 31st, YWCA is hosting a social justice training on practical allyship * Resolutions NW hosts numerous trainings, including an Interrupting Racism Actionshop in October. * The People's Institute Northwest is hosting 2-day workshops on undoing racism in July, September, and November in Portland.

The city of Portland has a division for assaults and bias crimes. * Hate crimes can also be anonymously reported to the Oregon Department of Justice, however using their form is not a substitute for filing a police report with federal, state and local law enforcement. * The Oregon Coalition Against Hate Crime also collects hate crime incidents, even if you have not reported them to authorities, and they keep reports confidential. They can also connect people to available resources. * ProPublica in January organized a coalition of media outlets, civil-rights groups and schools called Documenting Hate, which is also collecting reports of hate crime. * If you find hate graffiti, please cover it and report it either online via PDXReport.org, by email to graffiti@portlandoregon.gov, or by calling the ONI Graffiti Hotline (503-823-4824) or Police Non-Emergency (503-823-3333).
