Faith, Formation and Fellowship

I will make your name to be remembered
from one generation to another;
therefore nations will praise you for ever and ever. -Psalm 45:18

This Sunday is the Fifth Sunday after Pentecost and the appointed readings are Genesis 24:34-38, 42-49, 58-67; Psalm 45:11-18; Romans 7:15-25a; Matthew 11:16-19, 25-30.    We invite you to take some time this week to read them in advance so that they can speak to you throughout the week. If you don't have a Bible nearby, you can find the passages at this website: www.lectionarypage.net.

4 Church Beachapalooza 2017 Is Coming: Save the Date . On Sunday, July 30th, St. Mark's will once again join with St. Andrew's Pentecost, St. Luke's and St. Matthew's for the biggest gathering of Episcopalians in Evanston this year!  There will be only one worship service that morning at 10 a.m. in St. Mark's "usual location" (at the lakefront at Hamilton Street and Lake Shore Boulevard).  Worship will be followed by a coffee hour that will be as fabulous as you make it!  We need folks to sign up to bring treats to share. You can either visit www.SignUpGenius.com/go/30E0448AFAF23A57-lemonade2 OR sign-up at the lakefront - just ask an usher.

Jubi-latte & Tea Deum with the Rector: Pastor Debra will be at a table at Cupitol (812 Grove Street, Evanston) this Wednesday afternoon, July 5, from 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. and is happy to buy you a coffee, tea, or milkshake and to chat about whatever is on your mind (or nothing at all). . . . Hope you'll stop by! Students who are off for the summer are especially welcome!  Jubi-latte and Tea Deum will be on vacation for the rest of July but will resume on Wednesday, August 2.

AT LAST:  KABUL HOUSE AT ITS NEW LOCATION!  On Friday, July 14th, the St. Mark's Second Friday Dinner will take place at Kabul House 2424 Dempster Street, in Evanston.  This restaurant serves Afghan cuisine.  At least for now, it serves no alcoholic beverages--but allows for "byob".  We will meet at 6:15 p.m.  Anyone is welcome to participate.  If you plan to join the group, please RSVP to Dick and Carolyn Brooks at [email protected] or 847-424-8422.

Becoming the Story We Tell: Lectionary at the Lakefront:  We will not meet this week due to the 4th of July holiday; however, we hope you will join this small group at the lakefront each Tuesday from 7 - 8 p.m., July 11th through August 29th as we reflect together on the scripture for the following Sunday, looking for connections between the gospel drama and the drama of our own lives and becoming shaped by the stories that have been a part of our faith for centuries.  We meet just north of Hamilton Street and the lake close to the playground so that those who have small children can easily take part. [Rain location: St. Mark's parlor].

We're Going Mini Golfing!  Join us on Thursday, August 3rd for an evening of mini golf! We will meet at the Skokie Sports Park (3459 Oakton St, Skokie, IL) at 7 p.m. and purchase tickets when we arrive.  Tickets cost $6 for children under the age of 10, and $7 for everyone else.  Tickets cost $5 if we have a group of 15 people or more.  We will head to Steak & Shake for post-putt-putt treats!   If you plan to join us (and we hope you will!), please RSVP to Liz McElhatton at [email protected] or 847-454-6237.
Outreach and Social Justice

Midweek Lunch: Come and Join Us!
Each week, volunteers from St. Mark's and St. Matthew's work together to prepare and serve meals for our neighbors who struggle with hunger and homelessness.  On Tuesdays from 6:00-6:30 p.m. volunteers turn five pounds of turkey, two pounds of ham, one pound of salami, three pounds of cheese and six big loaves of bread into 60 sandwiches.  On Wednesdays, volunteers gather in Cunningham Hall to set up and take down tables and chairs, set out food and beverages, serve the meal and talk with our guests.   During the summer, many regular volunteers leave for vacation, and so help is needed on Wednesdays from about 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.  "Come and See" as we like to say at St. Mark's!  Join fellow parishioners Mary Pat Buckley, Rima Lockwood, Dave Himrod as well as folks from St. Matthew's to serve and meet our guests. Perhaps you'll be treated to an informal gospel music concert from Linda and friends. Contact John Lucadamo at [email protected] or 847-436-1701 for more information.

Supporting Workers' Rights in Cook County:
On Friday, June 30, 8 St. Mark's parishioners attended a rally and City Council meeting to support Evanston adopting  Cook County's minimum wage increases and earned sick time ordinances .  The ordinances were implemented on July 1, and Evanston's minimum wage increased to $10 per hour.  Skokie's village trustees will consider opting out of Cook County's minimum wage and earned sick time ordinances on Thursday, July 6. If you live in Skokie and want to support the implementation of these ordinances in your community, you can attend the Skokie Village Board meeting at 8 p.m. with pre-rally at 7:30 p.m. (Skokie Village Hall, 5127 Oakton St.) Contact Will Tanzman with The People's Lobby for more information at [email protected] .

Producemobile:
On Tuesday, July 11 and on the second Tuesday of each month, Interfaith Action of Evanston teams up with the Greater Chicago Food Depository to bring free, fresh produce to our neighbors in need.  The distribution takes place from 9:30 - 11:30 a.m. at the Robert Crown Center. Volunteers are needed from 8:30 a.m. - 11:45 a.m. If you are able to help out, you can sign up at http://www.signupgenius.com/go/5080d4fafac2fab9-evanston3

Pastor Debra's 23x23 Appeal: For the past two years St. Mark's has served as the sorting and distribution center for the COPE Backpack and School Supply drive.  This year I would like to issue a challenge to St. Mark's-- can 23 people from St. Mark's contribute $23 each to provide supplies for 23 students?   I think you can!  For each $23 contribution (use the link below), I will match the gift up to a total of $529 with monies from the Deacon's Alms Fund.  Simply make your gift using this link ( http://evanstoncope.org)-- click on the donate tab and select 'school supply kits'). Then send me an email to say you did it! ([email protected]).  I know that there are at least 23 St. Mark's parishioners ready, able, and willing to help!

COPE Backpack Drive 2017:  For the past two years St. Mark's has served as the sorting and distribution center for the COPE Backpack and School Supply drive.  2017 marks year #3 and we would love for you to be involved!  What can you do?

1.      Donate money http://evanstoncope.org/ (click on the donate tab and select "school supply kits")

2.      Donate NEW backpacks (you can purchase them from the Amazon Wishlist, http://bit.ly/Evanston_COPE OR you can purchase elsewhere and bring it to worship with you on Sunday, July 30 OR Sunday, August 6

3.      Sign up to help sort and/or distribute by clicking here: http://bit.ly/COPEVolunteer

4.      Please do *not* donate supplies. COPE will buy them in bulk and having miscellaneous supplies to sort through creates significantly more work for volunteers

Last year, we helped COPE serve 1018 children at all Evanston schools including JEH and ETHS.

Stewardship
Each month in 2017 we will feature a ministry of St. Mark's where we can "count what counts" because we are Bound Together in Christ. If you have a ministry at St. Mark's where we can "cou nt what counts" (lunches packed or served, pounds of produce distributed, hours of candles burned, number of notes sung!) contact Katie Kuriyama at [email protected] so we can assign you a month!

Counting What  Counts
In  the month of June, 8 different parishioners, serving as lectors, read the Old Testament and Epistle texts in our and 10:30/9:30 a.m. services.  In the "later" services, the texts totaled an impressive 2296 words, and in the "early" services, they came to a whopping 2721 words-due in no small part to the long, wonderful texts from Genesis.  Thanks to all those who faithfully contribute their gifts to our life together by reading!  If you would like to share your gifts as a lector, please contact Ric Ashley at [email protected].

Summer Giving - With increased vacations in the summer months, pledge payments can fall behind.  But, there is a way you can help! You can give online using PayPal! Simply go to our website: http://www.stmarksevanston.org and click on the Donate button in the right hand column OR most banks now offer "bill pay" services and you can set St. Mark's up as a recurring payment. Not a pledger? You can still use the Donate button on the website or set up a recurring payment from your bank.  All contributions are tax-deductible and we are grateful for whatever support you can offer as we continue to minister to one another and to our neighbors.
