Hello Members,
I hope your summer has been a good one. Is it just me or did this summer fly by? It is hard to believe our local schools open next week while others in the area have already started! Please factor in extra time in your morning drive to work for the school buses and children who will again be part of our traffic patterns.
I was fortunate enough to win a scholarship from the KY Chamber of Commerce Executives to attend the national American Chamber of Commerce Executives conference in Nashville, TN last month. Chamber professionals and presenters came from all over the U.S., Canada and beyond (including Vietnam) to network and learn, meet with vendors and hear from keynote speakers. A conference like this is always energizing where you meet counterparts from all over the country and share ideas, while learning about the latest information. From social media, communication, and sponsorship revenue, to millennials, volunteers, and and dues, I attended 10 classes in 2 1/2 days. I now hope to pick one or two great ideas and work on them here in our Chamber.
While I was away on vacation, I heard of the business closings on Main Street. All closed for different reasons and they will be missed! Thank you to Allan Crain, Wilma Brown and Jerry Houck for their hard work in bringing their businesses to life. We wish them much success in their future endeavors and retirements. (We wish Allan a complete recovery from his recent car accident.) Since I returned, I have also seen several new businesses opening. Southern Roots is located at 218. W. Broadway, a new bakery is going in on N. Third Street while another will business will open on S. Fourth Street. Local home grown businesses have sturdy entrepreneurs behind them. We wish these and others taking that big step much success. Your Chamber is here for business start up information and, soon, classes will be offered to help people with start ups.
The Chamber also wishes to welcome our new Planning & Zoning Director Steve Hunter to our community. We look forward to working with him on behalf of the business community and are excited about some of his ideas to help streamline the regulatory side of P & Z. Congratulations to the GABBF Board for bringing Kay Berggren back as Interim Director while the search for a permanent director is underway. Kay is a great choice and has much knowledge of the GABBF. Thanks, Kay, for coming out of retirement for a few months!
Finally, congratulations to Niki Kinkade in her new position as the Community Arts Center Executive Director. Our community is fortunate to have such talented people willing to serve in many capacities!
