GSU staff rep Steve Torgerson recently attended a Mental Health Commission of Canada webinar on combating stigma in healthcare and how people with mental illness access health care.

Having mental health issues can make it more difficult for people to access health care, and that has long reaching consequences. People might avoid regular checkups, or not seek a doctor's advice for a health concern because they are worried about how they will be perceived.

"About 30 per cent of short- and long-term disability claims in Canada are attributed to mental health problems and illnesses. The total cost from mental health problems to the Canadian economy exceeds $50 billion annually.  In 2011, mental health problems and illnesses among working adults in Canada cost employers more than $6 billion in lost productivity from absenteeism, presenteeism and turnover."

Mental Health Commission of Canada. " Workplace, Overview - What is the issue?'   Health Canada. 2017.

"Mental health is no longer something we suffer alone with at home. It affects every part of our life, including our work," Torgerson said. "The role of GSU is to help our members, and they can contact us for advice and ideas on how to handle a workplace situation - including their mental wellness."

Congratulations to our latest contest winners Elise Potter (Local 15 - CPS) and Evan Anderson (Local 1 - Viterra).

We had two contests last week.
  • Elise won our Tuesday Members' Memo contest by providing us with our toll-free numbers.
  • Evan was our web page contest draw winner with his premonition that this summer he would be watching the Riders play on July 8.
Thanks to everyone for playing along. Watch upcoming Tuesday Members' Memos and www.gsu.ca for more chances to win.

8 things to throw away before they hurt you

If you find yourself doing a little house cleaning over the summer season, there are a number of seemingly harmless things you should toss out. Like your old pancake mix. Did you know that under the right circumstances it can grow mold? Gross.

Your off-brand generic phone charger can put you in great danger, too.
