Consumers are interested in internet-connected, water efficient irrigation controllers.
 The demand for this new technology is revealed in the residential customer survey just released by the American Society of Landscape Architects.
According to the report, "Customers prefer sustainable - yet tech-friendly - elements for their outdoor living spaces."
For the first time, wireless/internet connectivity entered the top 10 project types. Here are some top project elements with the "expected highest consumer demand":
- Native/adapted plants - 82%
- Low-maintenance landscapes - 79%
- Permeable paving - 76%
- Fire pits/fireplaces - 72%
- Drip/water-efficient irrigation 71%
- Wireless/internet connectivity - 71%
The report added: "Well-designed residential landscapes provide social interaction, enjoyment of nature and physical activity, while also reducing water use and stormwater runoff".

This is the sixth consecutive year for Colorado recognizing Smart Irrigation Month, an Irrigation Association initiative that began in 2005.

 Water
use peaks during hotter weather. Now is the perfect time to start marketing
irrigation
upgrades to
your
customers. Systems that are more than 5 years old will benefit from
upgrading to new technology in sprinklers, nozzles, sensors and controllers.
1) Leverage Smart Irrigation Month. This industry-wide initiative is designed to help consumers understand the importance of
water efficient
upgrades. Share the helpful resources on the Irrigation Association's
website.
2) Increase awareness with proven marketing tools.
Send postcards or emails to current customers promoting upgrades like rain sensors, upgraded nozzles and smart controllers. Include tip sheets with your monthly invoices. Develop a simple "irrigation system audit checklist" to note specific recommended upgrades during service calls.
3) Educate customers on the benefits. Customers will buy upgrades when the benefits are clearly explained to them. Upgraded systems save time, water and money and provide property owners with greater control and peace-of-mind. Plus new upgrades get the system into top condition, avoiding the potential for future service hassles. Be sure to note that new wifi controllers provide the convenience of irrigation system management and monitoring from anywhere in the world.
