As a result, a marked improvement in Reading Fluency and in Math Fact Fluency can be observed, even after the first week.

LaAmistad Celebrates 6 Years in Collaboration with The Westminster Schools

LaAmistad has hosted its Anímate Summer Academy on the campus of The Westminster Schools every year since 2012. Rising 2 nd to 5 th grade Latino students from LaAmistad Afterschool take Math, Language Arts, English and Art classes and receive swim lessons at Westminster's aquatics center.

Students participate in book clubs to improve comprehension skills and increase vocabulary, play math games to increase math fact fluency and received intense daily phonics instruction. Moreover, our students are also able to experience culturally enriching field trips with the support of the High Museum of Art, Blue Heron Nature Preserve, Home Depot, AWARE Wildlife Center and Westside Yoga. Thanks to all of the wonderful volunteers, partners and donors our students are able to take advantage of these valuable summertime endeavors!

English for Successful Living (ESL) End of Year Wrap-up

Exciting changes are taking place at LaAmistad ESL. We now offer a 3 year program to our students that provides weeknights and Saturday morning classes. We have grown from 2 to 7 locations and through the support of our volunteers and partners, our student enrollment per session has tripled for the 2016-2017 year calendar compared to years past.

Additionally, we have cultivated new partnerships with like-minded organizations who believe in our mission and desire to offer the opportunity to the immigrant population in their community to become self-sufficient and learn English through LaAmistad ESL.

As we conclude this academic year, we would like to thank Holy Innocents' Episcopal Church, Marietta City Schools, Sandy Springs Mission, Centro Católico, the Mission of Holy Spirit Catholic Church , YELLS , Trinity Anglican Church , Peachtree Presbyterian Church , and all of the volunteers who have faithfully served in our community for the 2016-2017 year calendar.  We look forward to your continued support in the future!

LaAmistad Afterschool Ends with Incredible Student Progress

Bicycle Shallowford

The 2016-2017 LaAmistad afterschool year came to an incredible close last month and culminated in celebrations recognizing students' many accomplishments across all of our sites. The amount of support we receive from community members is astounding. Their dedication goes a long way in supporting LaAmistad students. As a result, we have witnessed significant improvements in our students' communication and social skills through their interaction with volunteers and their peers.

We have seen incredible gains academically as well. For this past school year the average math assessment growth rate for our students was 173% and 100% for the reading assessment across all locations.  But wait, there's more! According to our end-of-the-year survey 100% of LaAmistad parents believe that LaAmistad has helped their child in school and 100% of parents believe that their child has a more promising future because of LaAmistad.

Over the past year, many of our staff have personally met the champions that make our mission a reality. On occasion, you have shared some of the ways LaAmistad can improve and we have truly made it our goal to put your suggestions into action. That is why this summer the LaAmistad staff are currently working on a Volunteer Conference that will share best practices and ensure participants are better prepared to serve our students for the upcoming school year. Ultimately, we want to make sure we are able to replicate - if not surpass - the growth we achieved this past year.

Again, we are forever grateful for such a fruitful year and look forward to the contributions you will undoubtedly make next fall.

Among my favorite moments at LaAmistad Afterschool is when we are afforded the opportunity to reward our students for their hard work. Thanks to the generosity of our corporate partners we have been able to gift our students bicycles and backpacks filled with school supplies. Most of our kiddos cannot afford bikes so when they receive them for having the most improved grades, it provides them with an incentive to want to continue to do better in school. The expression on their faces is priceless!

This not only motivates the student but it supports their parents and families in feeling like they are part of a community recognizing their efforts and looking out for their best interest. Personally, I became involved with LaAmistad as a parent before joining as a staff member and I can wholeheartedly attest to the opportunities and endless possibilities that have been opened to my daughter!

Best Wishes,

A Special Thank You !

Church of the Redeemer Afterschool
On behalf of LaAmistad's staff and stakeholders we would like to take this opportunity to extend our formal gratitude to Church of the Redeemer, Crossroads Church of Dunwoody and all of the volunteers that served our students at these two locations. Both of the administrations at these churches were generous enough to support our efforts to serve the Latino student population by allowing us to operate an afterschool program out of their facilities.

We have had the pleasure of working with both these churches for two and five years respectively. But, unfortunately, we are regretful to report that for the upcoming 2017-2018 school year these two locations will no longer host our afterschool programs. We want to wish both churches well as they move onto new endeavors.

We and the students are eternally grateful of the fond memories that were created at both of these locations and are confident that they will continue to work with the local community in other capacities.
