Queen Esther -1879-
by Edwin Long
A Challenge from Father:
Last weekend's gospel reading was the parable of the sower, and the seed that falls on the path, or on rocky ground, or among thorns, or finally on good soil.  Well, the Word of God is seed that has been spread widely.  During his 10:30 homily, Fr. Crispin asked how many of us read the Bible "last night".  Now, he was asking how many of us read the Bible on Saturday night   :)  Still, I'm afraid the no-show of hands made our priest shake his head.  So, Fr. Crispin encouraged us to crack open our Catholic Bibles and read, and specifically to read the book of Esther, a short story from the Old Testament.  There are three books in the Bible in which a woman is the central character: Ruth, Esther, and Judith.  Esther is the story of a young Jewish woman whose courageous action saves her entire people.  So, make a little room in your summer reading for the Word of God, and start with Esther.  And don't be surprised if there's a quiz.

(If you don't have a Catholic Bible, come by the Parish office and we will get you one.)
"Gluten Free" Hosts at Mass
You might have heard the buzz about the norms regarding gluten and Communion hosts that went viral this weekend.   Click here for an article explaining the issue.

St. John Book Club News:
We hope to gather parishioners together in September for a discussion on the biography of our former archbishop, Archbishop Hunthausen in the book A Still and Quiet Conscience. It is an incredible story about his ministry in the Seattle area.

Service Projects Abound:
The Aurora Commons is a drop in center for people struggling right here in our own neighborhood.
We need casual clothes, shoes, coats to pass on to them. Please leave clean and serviceable items for them in marked bin at the back of the Church. High school students will sort and Sheila Connolly will deliver items as needed. This is another thing we can do together to help others!
1966 St John Reunion

To all 1966 graduates of St John School:

Members of St. John's 1966 graduating class are planning a reunion.  It will coincide with he 100 year celebration of St. John's Parish in October.  We would love to get the word out to as many as possible.  If you are a graduate of this class or know someone who was, please contact us.

Last weekend's first reading, Isaiah 55:10-11, is one of my favorites.

Just as from the heavens
the rain and snow come down
And do not return there
till they have watered the earth,
making it fertile and fruitful,
G iving seed to the one who sows
and bread to the one who eats,
So shall my word be
that goes forth from my mouth;
It shall not return to me empty,
but shall do what pleases me,
achieving the end for which I sent it.

The poetry is striking.  The image is memorable.  And the message is simple - God's word changes the world.  Be part of the change. Read God's word.  My prayer after this reading goes something like this:
Abba, Father in heaven, make me receptive to your word.  Let it change me.  Help me become the person you created me to be.  Lead me to be the change you want in the world.  Your will be done.  Amen.

If you have a prayer nugget you'd like to share with the parish, email Bill Marty, [email protected] .  Thanks!
