Summer 2017
Thank You For A Great Festival

Thank you to everyone who helped make this year's AngelsFest a HUGE success! We don't have finalized numbers yet but this is looking to be one of our best years ever. And it is all because of our volunteers. It takes hundreds of volunteers to make the festival happen, including committee members, chairpersons for specific areas and booths, and volunteers to work all weekend.

The festival raises money that is essential to our parish's general operating budget and we are grateful  for all of your support!  L ook for the  full details in our Annual   Report (which will be in the bulletin) later this summer. You can see photos from the event  here .

New Assistant Principal At Guardian Angels School

Greetings Guardian Angels Parish Members,

My name is Katie Durstock and I am thrilled to be joining the Guardian Angels community as the new Assistant Principal. I have already been asked by family and friends, why was I leaving Charleston and the sunny south and what drew me to this opportunity at Guardian Angels school. As a native Cincinnatian, I can assure you that it wasn't the Queen City's fickle weather! Rather, I am really excited to be joining a school where the entire community of parents, administrators, teachers and staff are all committed to creating an academic environment that fosters the development of the whole child.

I am the product of Catholic education, graduating from St. Ursula Villa, St. Ursula Academy, DePaul University, and Xavier University. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Public Communications, a Master of Education in Secondary Education, and a Master of Education in Educational Leadership. My teaching experience has been in both 6th and 8th grades as an English/Language Arts teacher for a school in South Carolina. During these roles, I also served as grade level chair, faculty leadership team member, and mentor to new teachers. During my teaching career, I also had the opportunity to create and lead faculty professional development opportunities, deliver all-school parent presentations on testing results, coordinate testing, develop master student & teacher schedules, and work in recruiting new teachers.

I was fortunate enough to attend parochial schools growing up and I know the positive impact that a faith-centered education has in helping students prepare for and deal with the difficult challenges in today's world. Innovative instructional practices and proactive parental engagement are vitally important, but a focus on our Catholic faith is ultimately the real difference in a Guardian Angels education. I am ecstatic about joining the Guardian Angels community and look forward to meeting all of you in the near future.

Volunteer Training Session Scheduled In August

All volunteers working with children in the school and/or parish must first go through a VIRTUS training session. A VIRTUS Session is been scheduled for Thursday, August 3rd. The session will begin at 7:00pm in the Undercroft. You MUST pre-register  online; if you are not pre-registered you will not be able to stay. No one under the age of 18 is permitted to attend and once the session begins no one will be permitted to enter, per Archdiocesan policy.

For any volunteers who have completed the session in the past, please make sure you are current on your bulletins. Just a reminder, if you miss more than 3 bulletin each month, sent via email, you are considered non-compliant and cannot volunteer to work with children until you answer all missed bulletins! If you need to have a background check completed, call Rose Ann Miller at 624-8962, for a Fastrax token, which covers the cost. If you do not have a token it will cost you $25.
GA Celebrates 125th Anniversary

Your help is needed in planning for this spectacular celebration. If you have any pictures and/or stories of events at Guardian Angels that you would like to share, we would love to hear from you. We are looking for copies of pictures from any time over the last 125 years; these may include baptisms, first communions, weddings, festivals, or other gatherings at the church. The GA archives have a lot of history but few pictures. You can send pictures and/or write your personal stories and forward them to Susan Boettner (Business Manager) by email,  sboettner@gaparish.org or mail or drop off at the parish office. Please include a description with a date of any photographs. Pictures may be scanned and included in the email or we will scan a copy and return it to you if it is brought into the office. If there is an older member who is homebound and would like to share his/her stories, please let the office know and we will have someone get in touch with that person.
Thank You From Glenmary Sisters

On June 16th, we once again welcomed families from your parish to help us with a family in need. We were amazed and delighted that there were 60 people - little ones, youth, and adults, who all had their individual jobs ready for them to do.

The family of seven we helped this year were in desperate need of home repairs. As soon as the group arrived, they headed out to the job and proceeded to build a new porch, repair and install siding, remove and install new underpinning, repair the floors inside the home, and paint the children's bedrooms. The younger children visited the nursing home, sang for the residents, and then headed back to camp to paint flower pots to plant flowers and make blankets for the five children. Like they've done in previous years, when the job was finished, they brought their gifts to the family.

Everything was so well organized and everyone worked so very hard. The compassion and love that was shown to this family was a blessing to witness not just for us but for the community as well.

Please know how truly grateful we are to your parishioners for your continued support of our mission here in Eastern Kentucky.

Noah's Ark Has Sailed

We had an amazing Vacation Bible Camp on "Noah's Ark" this year. What a delight it was, to see kids learning of God's promises and being taught the truths that can transform their lives literally, forever. We hope that they have been encouraged by the spiritual growth and friendships developed throughout the week.

I would like to say "thank you" to the volunteers who gave graciously of their time and talents. Your contribution was vital to this year's Vacation Bible Camp and it would not have been such a success without you! Our adult leaders and our student helpers were awesome!

Thank you to all of the campers who "came aboard" Noah's Ark. We were so glad that you "dared to enter" and allowed us to share our love and faith of our Lord.
We wish all of you a safe and God-filled summer and look forward to our 2018 Vacation Bible Camp.
Yours in Christ,

Mrs. Joan Schoenhoeft

Annual Servers' Dinner Held

Sr. Julie and Sr. Janet of the Sisters of St. Joseph joined our young ladies for dinner and shared the experiences and joys of their vocations. Our young male servers were joined by Fr. King, our seminary intern, Christian, and a host of other seminarians from Mt. St. Mary Seminary.

The server dinners are an opportunity to show our appreciation to our young ladies and young men who commit to serving at our parish. We appreciate Fr. King's hospitality at the rectory as well.

The GA Vocation Committee is an active committee dedicated to introducing and implementing programs and projects that will deepen and expand our Catholic faith in our school and parish.  We welcome any new members. The amount of time you can devote is flexible.  Please contact  Luann Rowekamp  if you are interested in joining us or sharing an idea.
