Jacob's Pillow!
Inlet Dance Theatre is being catapulted to national/international attention this summer! The company is booked to perform at Jacob's Pillow Inside/Out Series  on August 4th, putting a spotlight on dance from Cleveland.  This is one of those " once in a lifetime " opportunities.  Jacob ' s Pillow is a National Historic Landmark, recipient of the National Medal of Arts, and home to America ' s longest - running international dance festival. What Just Happened?

On  June 6th-10th  Inlet Company Members Erin Pennebaker and Dominic Moore-Dunson, with Exec/Artistic Director Bill Wade and Company Manager Libby Koba attended the week-long  Dance USA Conference in Kansas City. At this conference, everyone from  executive directors and emerging arts leaders to managers and presenters, agents and artists, joined hundreds of individuals associated with the professional dance field for networking, creative conversation, enriching training sessions, discussion on important issues facing the field, and performances.  Specifically at this conference, Dominic Moore-Dunson was requested by the Knight Foundation to be part of a cohort of 16 dance practitioners from the 8 major Knight cities (Akron, Charlotte, San Jose, Philadelphia, Detroit, Macon, Miami, St. Paul) to talk about how the Knight cities can connect to a network within the dance community in the future. The opening plenary speaker was Dawn Fraser, speaking on The Art of Storytelling in Leadership: Better leaders, better stories. Dawn Fraser  said , " One thing you must embrace is your story, no one can deny your story. If you don't tell you story, who will?  A true leader will help to create a narrative of the future they envision." The conference was truly inspirational, encouraging, and educational. Inlet is thrilled to have been a part of this year, and cannot wait until next year.

Below is a testimonial from Erin's week:
The week as a whole was extremely life giving and encouraging. We were surrounded by artists, dancers, managers, directors, you name it, everyone coming from a different background. I spent the week with people just as passionate and eager to use dance to further growth and change in communities as I am. There were revelations that we, as a company, are doing a lot of things correctly and ahead of the game. We are inclusive and collaborative. But it was also inspiring from a personal vantage point to see individuals and what they are doing in their communities and how they are evoking change through the art of dance and story telling, despite financial issues, pushback from funders or audiences, and fear of failure. I watched three dance companies kick ass on stage and be applauded at the end, to smaller dance companies performing in the parking lots and hallways as pop up performances and being just as supported and encouraged. It is easy to feel like the dance world is bigger than myself and I'm just a tiny fish in the big ocean, dance has always been competitive. But during the conference, all I felt (personally) was support and encouragement to fight, swim, and work together. I can't wait for next year's conference!

Lose your Marbles: A Dance-centric Performance Art Fringe Festival, was created to encourage new voices and risk-taking art by launching an Akron Fringe Festival that showcases visual and performing arts. Hosted by  Neos Dance Theatre , this festival was awarded from the Knight Foundation, Knights Arts Challenge

Inlet Spotting

You may have spotted Inlet dancers all around Cleveland this past month, and in various costumes depicting exciting characters!  Inlet Dance Theatre has an extensive history of repackaging our concert repertory to serve the unique needs of clients at corporate events, private parties, or civic engagements to creatively maximize the impact of opening celebrations, galas, benefits, festivals or events. In addition to a thematically and topically diverse repertory, we are able to tailor performances to better suit the needs of any special engagement. Inlet's Event Services allows us to create artistic experiences in unique settings. We are able to take our dance making skills, which often are seen in a typical theater setting, and unpack and deconstruct that, in order to reconstruct our artistic work to meet the needs in our community. Here's some examples:

On June 3rdInlet Dance Theatre partnered again with Cleveland PlayHouse for their benefit GRAND ILLUSION - A MAGICAL ODYSSEY. Event designer Chris Kascsak, assisted by Bret Manning and Juliana Kascsak, along with photographer Thom Sivo, Co-chairs Kathy Hogue and Rick Knapp, promoted and brought the event to new heights! The evening was true to its name--magical. Inlet is always thrilled to work with such an amazing Cleveland-based team of creatives.

Each year Inlet participates in the Cleveland Museum of Art's FREE annual celebration, Parade the Circle, in University Heights. This year, June 10, Inlet members performed everything from Calypso steel drum cart pushers to oversized puppets reaching 10 feet into the sky. These colorful costumes and creations are designed by community groups from all over Cleveland, and artists from all over the country and the world. Parade the Circle happens rain or shine, every year!
