The 2013 International Latino Book Awards

By Annie Perez

Once a year the eyes of the Latino community and publishing insiders turn to the International Latino Book Awards honoring the best in Latino Literature.  Latino Literacy Now is currently accepting submissions for their 15th Annual International Latino Book Awards. The awards, one of the oldest Latino literary award competitions and by far the largest, honored 148 authors and publishers during the 2012 awards.

The event, which is presented by Latino Literacy Now, begins with the call for submissions from Latino/Latina authors from around the world and culminates in the presentation of awards in New York City during BookExpo America.

Founded in 1997, Latino Literacy Now is a California 501c3 non-profit organization that promotes literacy and literary excellence in the Latino community.  In addition to the International Latino Book Awards, the organization hosts the Latino Books into Movies Awards, the Latino Literacy Now Lifetime Achievement Award for excellence in publishing and, in association with Edward James Olmos, noted actor, director and community activist, the Latino Book & Family Festival series.

In the past few years the International Latino Book Awards has grown to include more submissions and categories. This year over 20 new categories have been added including best Latino focused books, inspirational books,  books in Portuguese, best sports/recreation books, a category for graphic novels, Fantasy/Sci-Fi, best books by multi authors and a category for best translations.

Last year also saw more judges than ever before including Pulitzer Prize winners, heads of national organizations, noted educators, media professionals, and past winners.

Once again the event will take place at the prestigious Instituto Cervantes at 211 E. 49th Street in New York City, with its theatre seating and wide screen projector, the evening of May 30, 2013. It is presented in conjunction with Las Comadres para las Americas and BookExpo America. A reception follows.

Finalists will be announced the week of April 22, 2013 prior to the awards ceremony. The awards are overseen by Kirk Whisler with assistance from Nora Comstock, Annie Perez, and Jim Sullivan. For more information on sponsoring the awards contact Jim Sullivan by emailing [email protected].

 Media Insights

70% of consumers trust advertising in magazines and newspapers more than any other media say consumers in new study

New research has revealed that despite important changes in media consumption in recent years, consumers continue to have most trust in advertising in printed media.

When asked how much trust they attach to advertising in the various media, consumers gave

magazines and newspapers a score of 63%, TV 41% and Internet 25%. Consumers were also asked

about the role of advertising in purchase decision making ? almost seven out of ten said that advertising

in magazines and newspapers was most important in supporting purchase decisions. When asked to

compare direct mail with social media almost 90% of respondents valued addressed and non?

addressed mail above social media.

The purpose of the research was to gain insight into the role of printed media in consumers' everyday

lives as well as gauge consumer attitudes towards advertising in different channels. The study was

conducted by Finnish research institute VTT between April and August 2012 in 13 European countries.

More than 700 consumers took part and the proportion of well-educated people was high, an interesting factor as these are the people who have the best possibilities to use a wide variety of media.

Anu Seisto who lead the research at VTT had this to say about the results: "This study provided very

interesting information on the most important factors influencing the choice of media and attitudes

towards advertising. The results show that lifestyle and family situation explain the choices better than

demographic factors alone."

The research, commissioned by Print Power Europe, covered nine media types (magazine,

newspaper, TV, Radio, Internet, addressed Direct Mail, unaddressed Direct Mail, catalogue and Social

media).

Respondents were presented with a series of different media use situations and were asked to

comment on how well these stories described their own media use. Four distinct consumer segments

emerged from this research, Slow bon vivants, Busy mix?and?matchers, Tolerant surfers and Youthful

digilovers. The Slow bons vivants represent 23% of the respondents and are print users who associate

digital media with their hectic working life. Busy mix?and-matchers (46%) easily shift between digital

and print media and appreciate print media. Tolerant surfers (19%) are digital media users with a

positive attitude towards print media. Finally, Youthful digilovers, the smallest segment (12%), are pure digital users who do not see the benefit of using print media.

Although advertisers are shifting budgets towards digital channels, consumers continue to have the

highest trust in print and refer to advertisements in magazines and newspapers as an important source

of information to support their purchase decisions. A presentation of the research findings is available

for download on the Print Power website

This week we lost a true trailblazer for Chicanos with the passing of educator Sal Castro. He influenced countless students by exposing them to what was right and possible. Because he opened so many eyes the 1968 Los Angeles Walkouts happened that politicized a general and lead to an amazing 500% increase in Chicanos going to the UC or Cal State college systems in California. You can see parts of this history in the movie Walkout

Please make time this weekend to see the movie Filly Brown - you will enjoy it and it will help us get more Latino themed movies produced.

Filly Brown

Why It's Important To See The Movie Filly Brown

By Edward James Olmos

The time has come for all of us to take action and to help ensure that we'll see more Latino movies. On April 19th , the movie Filly Brown opens in 200 theaters around the United States. The movie, which I'm honored to be a part of, is a story about an 18 year old Latina poet, Filly Brown, who is also a rap artist who sings her poetry.  It's an honest story about a 21st Century family. Additionally, Filly Brown is full of great music - the beats are infectious and are immensely enjoyable.

Filly Brown is blessed by a great cast. It features an amazing newcomer, Gina Rodriguez, in the lead role of Majo Tonorio aka Filly Brown. Gina was wonderfully multifaceted in her complex role - her talent will impress all.

Jenni Rivera gives the performance of a lifetime as Filly's mother. I feel she deserves to win the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for the honesty of her portrayal. I'm saddened that we lost such a marvelous person far too soon.

The father role, Lou Diamond Phillips, gives his best performance since Stand & Deliver. The rest of the cast is just as talented. I'm honored to share the screen with such fine performers. The filmmakers have done an outstanding job of packaging from the cast to the music to the settings.

Beyond the film, attending this movie-especially on opening weekend-will send the message to movie studios that the audience wants to see more Latino themed films. If Filly Brown succeeds in the box office, we will start to see our stories told in major motion pictures. We are 52 million Latinos and major studios are still not telling our stories.

Show your support for Latino films by going out and supporting Filly Brown. If the movie does not perform at the box office, the film studios will get the impression that Latinos are not interested in Latino based films or films that represent their culture.

I cried the first time I saw the film. I know you'll find the film just as emotionally impacting as I did. Thank you for your consideration of Filly Brown.

Sal Castro

We Lost A Hero

by Herman Sillas

In the course of fifty-three years as a lawyer I have represented many clients, but one stands out.  We met in the sixties in the height of the Chicano Movement.  Sal Castro was a young handsome teacher at Lincoln High School in Los Angeles.  We met when I incorporated the Association of Mexican American Educators (AMAE).   He was part of a group who was concerned about the high drop-out rate of Mexican American students from school.  These teachers believed that if they united, the schools would have to listen to their concern about the plight of Latino students.

Mexican American teachers were few in those days and school administrators of Mexican heritage were even scarcer.  Yet this group was determined to make a difference.  Evening planning sessions were held to develop strategies on how to change a school system that ignored Mexican American students' culture and heritage.

The 1965 Watts Riot and its aftermath revealed the Black community's concern.  It also caused the Mexican American students to assess their condition.  They became aware that their Eastside schools lacked the facilities of the Anglo Westside schools.  At Castro's suggestion, they presented their complaints and concerns to the school administrators.  The District still paid no attention.  The students' frustration increased.  Castro was convinced that nothing would happen unless the students had a strike.  The more he thought about it, the more convinced he was that the students had to walkout; Castro was prepared to lead them.   His teaching companions balked.  They could lose their jobs if they took such a step.  Sal knew they were right.  Not only could he lose his job, he could lose his license to teach.  But Sal figured why have a teaching license, if you are not allowed to teach students in a way you know they will learn?

So, in March of 1968, Sal led over 4,000 L.A. students in a walkout of five high schools demanding changes.  For three days students walked out of classes in protest.  This was a new breed.  They called themselves Chicanos.  They were proud of their heritage and exercised free speech as Americans.  Parents were critical at first, but supported the students when they came home with welts from police batons.

Then a white Grand Jury issued a felony indictment charging Sal Castro and twelve other defendants with a conspiracy to disturb the schools.  The thirteen defendants became known as the "East LA 13."  Sal asked me to defend him.  The ACLU and their experienced attorneys joined in the legal battle.  Ultimately, the Appellate Court struck down the indictment as an infringement of free speech.

Throughout this period, I observed the commitment that Castro had toward his students.  He went where no other teacher would go.  He put his license and freedom on the line.  The administration then sought to remove him from the classroom and I defended him in that matter.  Castro never blinked.  Although they removed him from the classroom for a short time, he returned there teaching his students of their heritage and contributions of their ancestors to this nation.  Schools were never the same after the walkouts.  Educators took notice and reevaluated their approach of ignoring cultural and heritage backgrounds of their students.

Even when he retired from the classroom, he continued to raise money for student conferences, where they became motivated, stayed in school, and went on to universities.  Sal was my hero.  He stood up against all odds in life and won.  But cancer claimed him recently.  Every Latino student now in California, whether he or she knows it, owes their education in some way, to a young dedicated fearless teacher named Sal Castro. That's the view from the pier.

Bipartisan Group of House Members Release

Statement on Immigration Reform

Washington, DC - A bipartisan group of eight Members from the U.S. House of Representatives released the following statement today regarding their efforts for comprehensive reform of the U.S. immigration system:

"Americans want to see the nation's broken immigration system fixed, and they know it will take bipartisanship to solve this problem in a sensible and rational way. This week, a bipartisan group of Senators stepped forward to introduce their proposal, and we applaud their effort. We are also working on a good faith, bipartisan effort in the House. We believe we will soon agree on a reasonable, common-sense plan to finally secure our borders and strengthen our economy, with a tough but fair process that respects the rule of law so immigrants can contribute to our country. While we have made substantial progress, we continue to work diligently towards a bill that keeps America strong, competitive and true to our values."

U.S. Census Bureau Releases

U.S. Housing Market Briefs

We are pleased to announce the release of two briefs that incorporate American Community Survey (ACS) housing estimates:  Rental Housing Market Condition Measures:A Comparison of U.S. Metropolitan Areas from 2009 to 2011 and Physical Characteristics of Housing: 2011. These briefs provide a snapshot of aspects of the U.S. housing market from 2009 to 2011.

Rental Housing Market Condition Measures:  A Comparison of U.S. Metropolitan Areas from 2009 to 2011 examines four characteristics of the rental housing stock using data collected during the ACS in 2009 and 2011. The characteristics cover gross rent, gross rent as a percentage of household income, rental vacancy rates, and renter share of total households and describe significant changes comparing 2009 with 2011.

Policymakers use gross rent as a percentage of income as a measure of housing affordability, and it is often used to determine eligibility for federal housing programs. For this report, a renting household is "burdened" if the household is required to spend 35 percent or more of its income on housing costs.

According to ACS estimates, the share of burdened renters in the U.S. rose from 43.8 percent in 2010 to 44.3 percent in 2011.

Watch this video to find renter burden estimates by Metropolitan Areas similar to those included in the

Rental Housing Market Condition Measures brief using the Census Bureau's

Based on ACS data collected from 2009 to 2011, the Physical Characteristics of Housing: 2011 brief presents statistics on basic physical and structural characteristics of the total housing inventory at the national level and for metro areas. The report examines types of housing structures, newer and older houses, and the size of the houses measured by the number of rooms.

Only 6.0 percent of all housing units in the U.S. were newer houses (2005 or later), while older houses (before 1950) accounted for 19.3 percent of the total housing inventory.

2013 NLMC TV Writers Program Submission Period

Now Open!

Submission Period: April 2-August 2

Program Dates: October 14-November 15

The NLMC/NHMC Television Writers Program was created in 2003 and is an intensive scriptwriters workshop created to prepare and place Latinos in writing jobs for the major television networks. The Writers Program was created in accordance with NLMC/NHMC's mission to improve the image of American Latinos as portrayed by the media, and increase the number of American Latinos employed in all facets of the media industry and with the idea that if there are more diverse writers present at the writer's table, more diversity will be reflected on TV.

How it Works:

A total of 10 writers are accepted nationwide from an established network of non-profit agencies, schools, universities, guilds and media organizations. The goal is that the writers garner the skills necessary to obtain employment in the industry by participating in this five week total immersion workshop mentored and guided by former NBC VP of Script Development, Geoff Harris. Participants will become familiar with the format, character and storyline structure of specific shows currently on air and will complete at least one half-hour comedy or one-hour dramatic television script within the five-week period. All participants receive a weekly stipend and those who hail from out of state will receive a Southwest voucher for travel as well as housing and meals.

This is NHMC's 11th year administering the prestigious program and a total of 110 writers have successfully completed it, many of whom have worked as staff writers for FOX, ABC, CBS, and NBC. To learn more about the impact the Writers Program has had on previous participants please watch this video.

YOU should apply if you are:

1. A seasoned writer capable of writing at least a one half-hour comedy or a one-hour dramatic television script in English within a five-week period of time

2. Love watching TV and are interested in writing for television

Special Briefing: Chavez's Legacy and Venezuela's Future

Gallup reviews what Venezuelans thought about the Chavez government

by Andrew Dugan

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- As Venezuelans head to the polls Sunday to choose the late President Hugo Chavez's successor, the former leader's memory looms large. Gallup data collected in Venezuela and worldwide since 2006 provide insights into how Venezuelans and people worldwide felt about Chavez and the state of the country he left behind and the implications these findings could have on the election.

Quick Summary: Chavez's approval ratings were relatively high (57%) before he died, but Venezuelans saw their country deteriorating in several ways, particularly in terms of corruption and safety. This growing disfavor could convince Venezuelans to back the anti-Chavez candidate, Henrique Capriles, over acting leader and close Chavez confidante Nicolas Maduro.

During his 14-year run as president, Chavez promoted a socialist agenda that aimed to increase the state's role in the economy and implemented antipoverty measures in a nation riddled with financial hardship. Chavez's domestic and international critics saw his governing style as increasingly dictatorial, viewed him as unable to deal with the country's core problems, and considered his hostility toward businesses threatening to the Venezuelan economy.

Whether Venezuelans sympathize with Chavez and his disciples' vision of "21st century socialism" or his detractors' criticism will likely determine the outcome of the upcoming election.

Views of Chavez's Leadership: In 2012, the last full year of Chavez's presidency, the leader enjoyed a 57% approval rating, among the highest Gallup found during his last six years in office.

Chavez was a controversial leader on the world stage, and his bombastic style as well as his leftist ideology attracted admirers and enemies alike. Across Latin American and Caribbean countries surveyed, Chavez's government received a median 20% approval rating in 2012. Haiti, a recipient of Venezuelan oil, registered the highest approval, at 58%, while Brazil had the lowest approval of 8%.

Venezuelans Perceive More Corruption in Business: During Chavez's tenure, he nationalized more than 1,000 companies, but this does not appear to have positively influenced Venezuelans' views of their country's businesses.

In 2012, nearly three-quarters (73%) of Venezuelans said corruption was widespread in businesses, up from 56% in 2007. This upward trend also stands in stark contrast to other Latin American countries run by more market-friendly governments such as Brazil and Mexico, where the percentage of residents judging businesses as corrupt has steadily declined over the same time period.

Majority Satisfied With Chavez's Efforts to Deal With Poverty: Six in 10 Venezuelans in 2012 said they were satisfied with the country's efforts to deal with the poor, an objective of Chavez and his administration. Maduro has tried to identify with the poor and stressed his own working-class background throughout his campaign. Interestingly, the percentage of Venezuelans satisfied with the country's efforts to deal with the poor tracks closely to Chavez's overall approval rating, suggesting that this issue could be important to many residents. Noticeably, both metrics shot up in 2007 and 2012, years Chavez stood for re-election and, perhaps not coincidentally, dramatically increased public spending, including a 67% increase in government spending ahead of the 2012 election.

Venezuelans Saw Chavez Government as Corrupt: Chavez's critics in Venezuela depicted him as a near-tyrant with a record of cronyism. In fact, the government became much larger and more powerful during Chavez's rule, and large majorities of Venezuelans saw it as corrupt in his final six years. In 2012, 63% of Venezuelans believed there was corruption in government, similar to the 68% who said so in 2011. This would seem to support the opposition's narrative that Chavez ran a corrupt, unaccountable government. Chavez also made combatting corruption a major plank of his platform in his original campaign for office, indicating much of the country believes his government failed to deliver on this objective. However, this failure does not seem to have had much impact on Chavez's overall popularity.

However, the perception of government corruption is not unusual for Latin American and Caribbean countries, most of which have large majorities stating their country's government is corrupt. With 39% saying they believe corruption is widespread in their government in 2011, the most recent observation, Uruguay stands as the exception in the region and the only Latin American/Caribbean country to have a majority of its residents saying corruption is not widespread in the entire history of the question.

Venezuelans' Faith in Elections and Media Intact: If Chavez was granting himself an excessive amount of authority over the election system -- as his opponents claim -- many Venezuelans did not seem to notice. In 2012, 59% of the country believed in the honesty of elections, a record high, and a propitious number for a country about to embark on a new set of elections. And, 66% said the media has a lot of freedom -- equal to the median for Latin American and Caribbean countries. The 66% saying the media has a lot of freedom in Venezuela also represents an increase from 2011, when 58% of Venezuelans said the same.

However, the role of the media in national campaigns is once again coming under scrutiny. Maduro's television advertisements have broadcasted much more often than those spots supporting Capriles; in fact, Capriles is afforded only one 30-second ad per day. Meanwhile, Capriles has accused the military of assisting the government in helping to churn out voters.

Safety Still Significant Issue: Both candidates have pledged to take on Venezuela's crime problems for clear reasons. Compared with the rest of the region, Venezuela is unique in the relatively high percentage of residents who do not feel safe walking alone at night. In 2012, 74% of adults said they felt unsafe walking alone at night, far higher than in any other Latin American country -- a region where residents feel less safe than in any other regions of the world -- and one of the highest measurements in all of the 160 countries where Gallup surveys. Moreover, this figure has remained remarkably high over the past six years, suggesting a failure by the Chavez government and the need for whomever his replacement is to address this important issue.

Implications: Venezuelans face a major choice on Sunday: install the political followers of Hugo Chavez, or opt for a different direction. In many respects, Gallup's data suggest that the Venezuelan public is conflicted in terms of Chavez's legacy. While Venezuelans were satisfied with Chavez's efforts to alleviate poverty and largely did not appear to agree with the view that he was curtailing media freedom or rigging elections, most saw his government as corrupt and perceived a significant breakdown in public safety.

However, at the time of Chavez's passing, he was a popular president, and it is likely his death has only compounded that popularity. This means that opposition candidate Capriles has a tall task in defeating Maduro, but not an impossible one.
