49th Annual Meeting
The 49th Annual Meeting of the California-Nevada Chapter of the American Fisheries Society will convene April 8th-10th, 2015 at Hotel Paradox in Santa Cruz, CA.


Meeting Theme: Linkages
Linkages: Fisheies Science for a Connected World

2015's Cal-Neva conference theme is "Linkages: Fisheries Science for a Connected World."

From Sierra to sea, from local waters to global systems, fish live in a complex world inextricably linked with ours. Our conference will promote understanding of dynamic fisheries and ecosystem linkages, repairing broken linkages in life cycles or habitats through restoration and fisheries management, and forging stronger linkages among scientists, managers and partners.

Annual Meeting Call for Papers

This call for papers seeks oral and poster contributions relevant to the 2015 Linkages conference theme and the overall mission of AFS. Submissions are due by 15 December 2015. 

Example topics include but are not limited to: native fishes, drought, San Francisco Bay and other estuaries, stream and floodplain restoration, dams and managed streams, fish passage, genetics, marine ecosystems, telemetry, and physiology.

Ramona Swenson, Ph.D.

 

Ramona Swenson is the Restoration Ecology Program Manager at Environmental Science Associates (ESA). Her major interests include estuarine ecology, ecosystem restoration, and behavioral ecology of fishes. Ramona traces her fisheries career to the tidal wetlands of the Chesapeake Bay, where she worked for the Smithsonian and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

She earned her Ph.D. in Integrative Biology  at U.C. Berkeley in 1995, and her 
B.A. in Biology at Swarthmore College. Her doctoral research focused on the curious reproductive behavior and ecology of the tidewater goby, an endangered species native to California's coastal lagoons. As an Ecoregional Ecologist for the Nature Conservancy, she developed conservation strategies, restoration plans and measures of success for the Cosumnes River and other Central Valley sites.  

 

 

" AFS has been my most valued professional organization. The connections and friendships I've made through the CalNeva chapter helped launch my career." Ramona earned a best paper award as a student at the 1993 WDAFS meeting, and a special contribution award in 2000. She served on 
CalNeva Executive Committee 1995-2000 as the Fishery Action/Information Network coordinator, in collaboration with the Conservation Committee. Ramona also promotes opportunities for girls in STEM fields, mentors young biologists, and sponsors networking events for professional women. "I am excited to have this opportunity to once again serve the Chapter, to promote sound fisheries management and restoration, to support professional growth for our members, and to increase diversity in our field."

2016 Western Division Meeting:
Cal-Neva to Host 

The California-Nevada Chapter will be hosting the 2016 Western Division AFS annual meeting in Reno Nevada, March 2016. 

This is a real honor for the Cal-Neva chapter and plans are already rolling for Cal-Neva to host an excellent meeting.  The Western Division includes Alaska, Washington, Oregon,  Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah, Arizona,  and New Mexico.  Stay tuned for details. 

 

Cal-Neva Chapter Executive Committee:  Positions Open

What is the executive committee?  The executive committee (ExCom) for the Cal-Neva AFS chapter consists of elected officers, Past-President (Pat Crain), President (Norm Ponferrada), president-elect (Ramona Swenson), Secretary (Sean Hoobler) and Treasurer (Gena Lasko) as well as numerous committee chairs.  
 
What does the ExCom do?  The ExCom is the leadership of the Cal-Neva chapter.  We meet monthly to decide on important chapter business including conference plannings, draft AFS policy position statements and facilitate communication amongst our membership.

If you feel like your voice isn't being heard, this is the place for you!    
Current Openings:

Continuing Education:  Position responsibilities include soliciting requests for workshops and courses to be held at the annual meeting as well as other non-conference workshops.   Organizing and facilitating workshops during the annual meeting.  Informing the membership about upcoming workshop opportunities in the PISCES E-News, Facebook and Twitter. 

We also need candidates for Secretary, Treasurer and President-Elect.

Volunteer opportunities for the 2015 annual meeting are many.

Volunteers receive free conference registration.  You must be a student, intern or scientific aid to qualify.

We are pleased to sponsor a travel grant  for Cal-Neva members  who are presenting at this year's conference, as well as young professionals in the Cal-Neva membership.

The award is designed to encourage attendance among young fisheries professionals, and to recognize presenters who have made substantial contributions to the field through continued education, outreach, and AFS service. The award provides up to $500 in travel support.
