Microaggression Training
The term "microaggression" was used by Columbia professor Derald Sue to refer to "brief and commonplace daily verbal, behavioral, or environmental indignities, whether intentional or unintentional, that communicate hostile, derogatory, or negative racial slights and insults toward people of color." Check out this blog from Buzzfeed for examples of common microaggressions (warning: explicit language).

National Summer Learning Day: July 13
National Summer Learning Day is a national advocacy day aimed at elevating the importance of keeping kids learning, safe and healthy every summer, ensuring they return to school in the fall ready to succeed in the year. Your participation sends a powerful message across the nation that summers matter and offers an opportunity to showcase how summers can make a life-changing difference in the lives of young people.

Not hosting an event? Get on social media and share what you're doing to stop the summer slide and use the hashtag #iowasummerlearning. FInd out more about National Summer Learning Day on the National Summer Learning Association website.
Advocate for Summer Programming
Want to do more on National Summer Learning Day? Take a moment to tell Congress to support afterschool and summer programming.

President Trump's budget calls for eliminating funding for local afterschool and summer programs. It's now up to Congress to counter the cut-or execute it and eliminate programs relied on by families across the nation to keep kids safe and engaged. Nearly two million children and families would be left without reliable afterschool choices.

20 million families want and need more afterschool and summer learning opportunities. For every child in a program, two are waiting to get in. Closing 10,000+ afterschool programs will hurt families and children in every part of the country.

You can make a difference: call on Congress to protect funding for afterschool and summer learning programs.

Summer STEM Activities
Looking for fun and engaging STEM activities for your summer program? The National Afterschool Association offers free "STEM Gems," short discovery-based experiences. They involve little or no materials and may be easily implemented by educators who are not STEM specialists.

Each STEM Gem is designed to engage young people in active experiential learning. The activities begin by setting up connections to prior knowledge, then a hands on activity provides new concepts and the opportunity to design experiments to answer any questions the kids discover. Finally, a connection to a different scenario for the concept is provided to help cement and evaluate the learning.

Find STEM Gems online on the National Afterschool Association website.
