Reverend Ben Roberts |
To the Saints of SOP,
"...You will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth." (Acts 1:8, ESV)
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
As you enter and exit out the main doors of the building of Summit of Peace, you will notice something on the north wall. At the top, in blue lettering, is a sign detailing the third part of SOP's vision and, also, the third step of our discipleship process: "Live The Faith". Below it is a massive map containing three parts: Thornton, Metro Denver and Everywhere. Each of these parts have any number of yellow dots. To the side and below this map is this Bible verse: "You Will Be My Witnesses in Jerusalem and all of Judea and Samaria and to the end of the earth. Acts 1:8" The idea of placing this at the main entrance is for those who have come to SOP to receive God's gifts are then sent back out to bring those gifts to everyone. The parallels of the Bible verse are evident on the map: Thornton is Jerusalem, Metro Denver is Samaria, and the end of the earth is Everywhere. Each yellow dot represents a ministry or disciples from SOP that actively witness to others the love of God in Jesus Christ. This whole arrangement serves as a reminder to be a "witness" for the Lord Jesus Christ, having received His love during the ministries within the confines of the church building.
This idea of going out and witnessing is nothing new. Jesus gave this command to His original disciples before He ascended into heaven. His work of growing His church would continue through them. At Pentecost, having received the Holy Spirit, Peter and everyone else boldly "witnessed" to those gathered for the feast in Jerusalem of the power and salvation of God in Jesus Christ. The church grew. But the church did not stay in Jerusalem. During a time of persecution, many disciples scattered, including to the area of Samaria. Those who scattered witnessed to the love of God in Jesus Christ. The church grew. The apostle Paul, having become an apostle after a dramatic revelation of the risen Jesus to him on the road to Damascus, witnessed to people as far away as Rome, even possibly Spain...at that time, for many, the end of the earth. And, you guessed it, the church grew. And this witnessing has continued throughout history, and continues today, including through the people of Summit of Peace, as the map demonstrates.
But what if Jesus was saying something else? What if "You Will Be My Witnesses" was not only a command...but a promise?

The Bible on Trial: May Adult Bible Study
Beginning May 7th in the Gathering Grounds Fellowship Hall join us for a new Bible study. The Bible On Trial: Beyond A Reasonable Doubt
, the case is made that the Scriptures are authentic, dependable, God-inspired and worthy-not only of our full attention but of our complete faith. In this
Men's NetWork
Bible study, attorney Craig Parton leads the viewer through relevant points that comprise this important discussion. He asks, "Is this book, the Bible, and its contents-reliable?"
This question has been fiercely debated for centuries-and rightly so. If the Bible is not worthy of our faith, if it is riddled with errors, if it is full of inconsistent and false information, then knowing that up front is vital in forming a decision about it. If, on the other hand, the Bible stands up to critical scrutiny and academic investigation, if it shows itself to be a trustworthy record of historical events and God's dealing with man, then its all-inclusive promise to sinners of salvation through the blood of Jesus Christ makes it the world's most important book.
In four sessions,
The Bible On Trial: Beyond A Reasonable Doubt
addresses critical views of the Scripture, examines evidence from the ancient world, surveys how archaeology often corroborates the Biblical record and considers the word of those who were either Jesus' contemporaries or were closely connected to eyewitnesses who knew Jesus -and His remarkable life-well. Click HERE for a PDF Poster of the new Bible Study.

Seniors of Summit Tabernacle Experience
|
|
There is a unique opportunity to experience a life-size interactive model of the Old Testament Wilderness Tabernacle which accompanied the Israelites on their desert journey.
Trinity Lutheran in Fort Morgan is hosting the "Tabernacle Experience" for 10 days in May.
The Tabernacle Experience is a tangible, multi-sensory encounter that will stir your emotions and faith in the person of Jesus Christ.
One step inside the Tabernacle Courtyard will translate you into Old Testament times. You will experience a day in the life of an Old Testament priest as you engage in the duties and rituals within the Tabernacle.
First you will be 'clothed' in the White Linen Garment of the priest. At the Altar of Burnt Offering you will lay your sacrifice on it's consuming fire. You'll approach the Laver and wash your hands in preparation for the work of The LORD. At the Lampstand you'll light an oil lamp and participate in Communion at The Table of Bread. The smoke rising at The Altar of Incense will heighten your senses and remind you of your prayers ascending to the very throne of God. As you draw back the Curtain and enter The Most Holy Place your journey will culminate before the Ark of The Covenant and The Mercy Seat.
The narrated journey is 47 minutes long. Please plan to wear comfortable shoes - closed shoes are recommended.
Suggested contribution - $5 per person.
Summit of Peace has reserved limited space on Friday, May 12th, at 6:30 pm. If you are interested in joining us, please contact Kim Wheeler ASAP to be included in the reservation. Phone: 303-451-1183 (home), 303-594-3069 (cell/text) or email at:
wheelkim@comcast.net. There is also a sign up at church for carpooling.

Attend a special shopping event to benefit Food For Hope on Saturday, May 6th from 2PM-5PM here at SOP. Mother's Day and More will be a fun day to come and shop for mom, end of year teacher's gifts and to find something for yourself! There will be many vendors with special gift ideas for everyone! There will be a bake sale also. The $2.00 per person admission fee includes a free raffle ticket for prizes from the vendors. Consider This "Tip" To Help You Save for College
|
|
If you're trying to save for a child's college education, here are some college funding options you may not be aware of. An easy way to remember them is with the acronym "TIP."
- Trusts: Trusts can be used for education and other purposes.
- While contributions to a trust have no minimum or maximum amount, exceeding the annual gifting limit could reduce the donor's lifetime gift and estate tax exclusion amounts.
- When a family creates or uses a trust for any purpose, it can affect a student's eligibility for need-based financial aid.
- Contact an attorney to see if a trust could be right for you.
- IRAs: While primarily used for retirement savings, traditional and Roth IRAs allow you to withdraw funds penalty-free if used for qualified education expenses.
- Your contributions can grow tax-deferred until withdrawal. And with a traditional IRA, they may also be tax-deductible.
- Using IRAs for college funding can affect your retirement strategy and need-based financial aid eligibility, so be sure to contact a financial representative about this option.
- Permanent life insurance:
- If something should happen to you, a permanent life insurance contract can help ensure that financial goals like education funding can still be met.
- Permanent life insurance contracts may accumulate cash value that can be used during your lifetime and also provide additional flexibility for other funding avenues as well.
Make wise decisions about your money
The TIPs here may or may not apply to you, so if you want help figuring out what you should do, contact your Thrivent Financial representative, who can help you make smart college funding choices. Your representative can also team up with other financial representatives who are Certified College Planning Specialists to help you with your overall college planning challenge.
