The Board and staff of the Dufferin Board of Trade are proud to announce that nominations are open for the 2017 Business Excellence Awards! This annual celebration of the best in business culminates at the awards gala in October where our organization has the honour to present the eight highly esteemed awards to the deserving recipients. This year we are presenting awards that recognize every aspect of our business community from large to small businesses, non-profits, community organizations, and individuals who exemplify business leadership.  I encourage you to visit our website to read about the award categories and nominate a business that you believe exemplifies business excellence in Dufferin.

In addition, our annual Golf Tournament on August 24th is fast approaching and what better way to think local than to play local at our Play Local Golf Tournament. This year's silent auction will be benefitting Headwaters Health Care Foundation. As always the golf tournament promises great fun and prizes, friendly competition, and a year's worth of bragging rights!

Think Local Member Outreach Program

Wade Striebel, Think Local Champion
Back in January of this year the team at DBOT launched the Think Local campaign.  Think Local is DBOT's campaign to support our outstanding members and the greater Dufferin business community.  Thinking local means buying local, partnering local, and working together to build a strong and robust business community in Dufferin.

We are very excited to have Wade Striebel join the DBOT team this summer as our Think Local Champion. In this new role Wade will be travelling around our region meeting with our members and collecting their stories and experiences. The goal is to understand what makes this region the best place to do business and to spotlight the amazing businesses that call Dufferin home. The secondary goal is to collect information on business issues that affect operators in our region. These interviews will help us to form our policy resolutions and frame our advocacy agenda.

The stories of our hard working entrepreneurs and business professionals will be captured on our website under our key sectors section.

Federal_Update
The Changing Workplaces Review and newly announced Fair Workplaces, Better Jobs Plan has presented new and concerning challenges for our members and the greater Dufferin business community. The Dufferin Board of Trade and the Ontario Chamber of Commerce have been vocal opponents of many of the reforms.

We have collected comments from our members on how these changes will affect their operations and we encourage you to take action against these reforms by submitting a letter to your local MPP through the Keep Ontario Working Coalition's website. The Keep Ontario Working (KOW) group is a coalition of Ontario's leading industry and sector associations as well as major employers. KOW brings together divergent voices to strengthen our collective advocacy.

5 Minutes for Business: Modernizing NAFTA - Come Join Our Campaign!
This brief from the Canadian Chamber of Commerce reflects on the relentless efforts of business communities around the world in support of trade and what you can do to put the power of the Chamber network behind NAFTA.

We remain optimistic that NAFTA 2.0 could be a huge boost to the economies of North America because there is so much to be gained. But we're also starting to worry: anti-trade rhetoric and posturing could veer the talks towards trouble. There are a lot of contentious issues to resolve in an unreasonably short deadline. Trade, in general, and NAFTA, in particular, are massively unpopular with Trump supporters.
