Alleynah Cofas

I was born in Kansas City, Kansas, and spent most of my childhood living in Fort Collins, Colorado.
Last year, I graduated from the University of Kansas with a bachelor's in journalism and minor in Brazilian studies. During college, I was really involved in my school's daily newspaper as a reporter and copy editor. I also worked as an intern for newspapers in Kansas and Colorado covering breaking news, agriculture and produce business, water, oil and gas, startup businesses, and features.
 
Some of my favorite activities involve being outside, including walking, biking and swimming, as well as weightlifting, road trips and playing the tenor sax.
I am very excited to be a part of the marketing team at the Arabian Horse Association, and I look forward to learning more about the iconic breed and helping provide our members with top-notch content!

Do Your Entries The Fast, Easy Way - Online!

You can now do all of your   AHA National Show  entries   ONLINE ! It's easy to do and you won't have to spend money on postage, have the hassle of sending in photo copies of your membership/competition cards, and the stress of having everything arrive on time to the AHA office. To access online entries, login with your member ID and password on the member   sign-in page . The national show entries are located on the left task bar under AHA Events.

Remember, the earlier you complete your online entries, the less time you spend worrying about them! During entry registration time, the AHA Office becomes very busy processing all of the entries. To help alleviate this busy time, online entries are a great help to us, and they save you time!

Online entries will be available until the closing date for each National Event which are listed below:
  • Sport Horse Nationals: July 18, 2017
  • U.S. Nationals: August 29, 2017

Time to Ride Challenge Officially Started

The  Time to Ride Challenge through the American Horse Council is back for 2017 and it is your chance to share the Arabian horse with newcomers, and to win cash and prizes at the same time! Challenge registration began March 1, 2017 and is free to join. The Challenge started May 1, 2017, and continues through September 30, 2017. Arabian Horse Association (AHA) members can win additional cash by participating in the Association Challenge portion too. Just remember to sign up as an AHA member when registering for the Challenge, and you will automatically be eligible for a portion of the $5,000 cash prize.

The 2016 AHA Challenge winners, Rushlow's Arabians of Romulus, Mich., brought a total of 807 newcomers and received prize money of $3,500 from AHA. The AHA Challenge runner-up, Rusty Bar Ranch of Roy, Wash., attracted 232 newcomers and received prize money of $1,500 from AHA. Certified Horsemanship Association's Level One Horsemanship Manual Available in Spanish

The Certified Horsemanship Association (CHA) offers four levels of horsemanship manuals to its membership, including the CHA Composite Horsemanship Manual. In addition, CHA is proud to offer its Level One Manual of Horsemanship in Spanish. Since there was a demand for a Spanish horsemanship manual, it made sense to translate the Level One manual into Spanish. 

Manual Compuesto de Equitación Nivel 1 is a 48-page book with illustrations by Susan Harris and detailed information on horse sense, rules for safe riding, parts of the horse and tack, how to safely approach the horse, leading, grooming, saddling and bridling, mounting and dismounting, basic seat and hand position, basic aids and horse control, circles and reverses, beginning the trot, exercises on horseback, elementary trail riding, and more. The book also contains a written exam and arena riding patterns.

Certified Horsemanship Association Creates Speakers Bureau

The Certified Horsemanship Association (CHA) has created the CHA Speakers Bureau, which is made up of CHA Certified Instructors who are available to speak at events inside and outside the horse industry. Speaking at events is a great way for CHA Certified Instructors to share their love of the horse industry, encourage additional people to get involved with horses, share their experience with CHA, and educate others about horses and horsemanship. 

Speakers from the CHA's Speakers Bureau have already been busy speaking at a plethora of events around the United States, including various CHA Regional Conferences and expos, such as the Northwest Equine Expo, Pennsylvania Horse World Expo, Hoosier Horse Fair, Minnesota Horse Expo, and others.




A reminder that our Annual Convention will be held from November 15-18 at the newly renovated Denver Marriott Tech Center, just south of downtown Denver! Come out and experience Denver and meet new people who share your love for the Arabian horse! 

Rooms will be booked on a first come, first served basis. Room rates are guaranteed until Wednesday, October 25. However, if our block is sold out prior to October 25, rooms will be guaranteed on a space available basis only.

AHYA Board Scholarship Program

The Arabian Horse Youth Association (AHYA) is working to find a new way to encourage  youth to participate on the AHYA Board of Directors. At Convention it was discussed to fund a scholarship program for those individuals that are serving on the board. The idea behind these scholarships, is to encourage the youth to participate and have an active role in AHYA, as well as develop them as future leaders.
 
With the right funding, we would like to award a $1,000 scholarship to each Regional Director. We are hoping to start this scholarship fund with $22,000. So far we have raised $14,700. Please consider your region donating to this scholarship fund. We would like you to join us in providing opportunities to reward those outstanding youth members who are the future of our breed.

$200,000 Arabian Racing to be Run on Preakness Stakes Day 2018

At the recent World Arabian Horse Racing Conference in Marrakesh, Morocco, Lara Sawaya, Executive Director of the Sheikh Mansoor Festival made the exciting announcement about the $200,000 Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan Cup 100 Years Stakes (G1) being run on one of the biggest stages of Thoroughbred race days, the 2018 Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Racecourse in Maryland.

A Love That Has Lasted A Lifetime


R onald Gustaveson is a 79-year-old gentleman that has had a passion for horses since he was a small boy. It all started when his Uncle put a young 5-year-old Gustaveson on a pony. He was instantly hooked, even though the ride ended up not turning out the greatest. Gustaveson's Uncle decided to help the pony along by giving a slap to the rump and young Ronald learned quickly how gravity worked. Early ride mishaps aside, Gustaveson's love for the horse only grew.


This love was helped along by his third grade teacher whom read Walter Farley's The Black Stallion book to the class. He decided right then and there that he was going to own an Arabian horse. Unfortunately, growing up, his father would never buy Gustaveson a horse. Instead, he found an outlet for his passion through his best friend Blair Cooper. Cooper would let him come and ride his white and chestnut three quarters Arabian Pinto horse. This was back in 1958 and the interaction once again confirmed to Gustaveson that the Arabian horse was the breed for him.

Gustaveson was introduced even more into the Arabian horse industry when he started attending Arabian horse club meetings. He enjoyed participating in the club so much he has been a member going on 57 years.

Since Gustaveson didn't own a horse of his own yet, he decided it was time to start searching. He found his first Purebred Arabian foal at a farm in Utah and his start in Purebred Arabians began. He then started combining his enjoyment of attending shows with that of attending club meetings.

In 1965 Gustaveson started dating a girl and they eventually married in 1966. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last November and have shared in fueling a joint passion for horses for the duration of their marriage. Gustaveson did buy his wife a horse after their first year of marriage but after her horse died of colic, she said it was too painful to buy another one and instead, decided to support Gustaveson from the sidelines. She still to this day will go to horseshows with him and will help him zip up his chaps before showing.

Through the years, Gustaveson and his wife had four kids. His kids were involved with the horses, but they were not bitten with the bug like he was. His kid's did well showing but they eventually found a love for ballroom dancing and started competing. Gustaveson and his wife started teaching ballroom dancing classes and horses fell to the backburner. Through the years, his kids started having kids of their own and the grandkids loved coming out to Gustaveson's place to ride horses. Now that the grandkids are into horses, especially his granddaughter, Gustaveson is back to owning and showing Arabian horses. He enjoys working out in the barn, doing all the horse chores himself and going and showing throughout the year at the age of 79, with no plans of slowing down or his passion for Arabian horses burning out.
