Lime Kiln on Davidson Creek                Photo by Jess Riddle

Hike Leaders: Geologist Bill Witherspoon and Ben Cash

Hike Location:
 Davidson Creek, Habersham County

Hike Date: Saturday, April 7, 2018

Outing Description: Davidson Creek is a clear, rocky stream in the Chattahoochee National Forest, which flows into the better-known Panther Creek, roughly 1.5 miles upstream of that stream's mouth on the Tugaloo River at the Georgia-South Carolina state line.

Bill, co-author of the popular guide, Roadside Geology of Georgia, will explain the likely role of stream capture in shaping this rugged, beautiful landscape. The other influence here is the Brevard Zone, a 375-mile-long zone of faulting that last moved more than 200 million years ago. Here the Brevard Zone contains the calcium carbonate rock, marble, which is quite unusual in Georgia (famous quarries around Tate notwithstanding). We will visit a 19th-century lime kiln (pictured) in which CO2 was driven out of the marble as a step in making cement, and the heat turned part of the kiln walls to glass.

Meeting Time, Place and Directions: Meet at 10:00 am at the Subway sandwich shop/Kangaroo Express gas station in Hollywood, GA, which is in the northeast corner of the intersection of US 23/441 with GA 17 Alternate. We'll leave some vehicles in a church parking lot that is south on old Highway 441. We will carpool about 3 miles from there to the trailhead.

Distance and Difficulty: This is a moderate to strenuous hike, about 2 miles round trip, which includes about 500 feet elevation difference to descend to the stream and later climb back out. A part of the trail is rather steep and none of it is maintained, so expect a few obstacles. We will travel at a leisurely pace with frequent stops to appreciate the plants and geology.

Duration: About 4 hours including carpooling

Participant Limit: 20

What to Bring and Wear: Lunch, plenty of water, rain gear, and sturdy footwear.  If allergic to bees/wasps, remember to bring your meds/epi-pen.

Cancellation: Hikers will be notified if the outing is canceled due to forecast of severe weather, etc.

Pet Policy: No pets, please

Family Safe Policy: Georgia ForestWatch Outings are a smoke-, alcohol-, and drug-free setting.
