'Battle Stations' Inspire Healthy Competition in Upper Cervical Technique
Assistant Professor Jaime Browning, D.C., ’09, loves a challenge. So when she adapted a military exercise called “Battle Stations” for her Upper Cervical Technique course three years ago, she was betting her students would be up for it – and they were. It continues to be a favorite class competition, as well as a great way for students to demonstrate their mastery of various knee chest and side posture techniques.
Browning drew inspiration from her own experience in Navy boot camp in Chicago 15 years ago. The final part of her training involved being separated into teams, challenged with many scenarios the Navy faced, and put in positions to make difficult decisions, all while the clock was ticking. Time taken to complete the mission successfully was compared to other teams.
“It was terrifying, overwhelming, exhilarating, and pride-inducing,” she remembers. “At the end of the entire exercise, I felt like I accomplished so much. And I loved my fellow sailors for knitting ourselves together to accomplish what felt like the impossible. It was one of the best experiences of my life.”
While chiropractic technique class obviously isn’t the same as combat, Browning says there are some similarities. “Hard work is important,” she says. “Attention to detail is important. Timeliness and fluidity are important. Being held accountable is important.” And these are excellent lessons for her fourth-quarter students.
Robyn Kirby and Tara Levesque, members of this quarter’s Battle Stations top team, both said the activity requires teamwork, patience and a competitive spirit. “The best part was the intensity of the competition,” Kirby shared. “The entire class wanted to win! We were all driving each other to do well.”

College Publications, Public Relations Honored
Two Sherman College print pieces and one marketing campaign have been recognized with first place awards in the 2018 Media Women of South Carolina (MWSC) Communications Contest; a fourth entry was awarded second place in the speech category. The contest, sponsored by the state affiliate of the National Federation of Press Women (NFPW), encourages and rewards excellence in communication. Director of Public Relations Karen Brower Rhodes created these publications for the college in 2017 and submitted them to the Media Women of South Carolina contest this February. The first place award winners for South Carolina will be submitted to the national contest for judging later this year.
The college’s
Sherman
alumni magazine (fall 2017 issue) won top honors in the magazine category, while the “
Dreams Coming True” campaign brochure won first place in the brochure category of the contest. In addition to print pieces, the Public Relations office submitted a “Dreams Coming True” campaign that was given top honors in its category of marketing campaigns. The judge had high praise, claiming, “This is truly outstanding. I love the theme – it manifests both the very real, physical goal of the campaign with the inspirational/higher-level goal of education. I'm especially impressed that this campaign contains many multi-channel components, to meet a variety of audiences in their desired spaces.”

'Stress Buster' Chair Massages Help Students Unwind
Juggling the demands of classes and a private life can leave students drained. Realizing that very real threat to student success led to the creation of mental health awareness activities on campus that are designed to reduce students’ stress and help them relax.
Student Affairs’ most recent activity, held on February 23, was a partnership with nearby Spartanburg Community College; the institution’s massage students came to campus to offer 15-minute chair massages to reduce stress and promote relaxation. Both students and employees took advantage of the opportunity and completely booked up all available appointments within hours of the event announcement. Walk-ins were also accepted.
View the photo album.
The event featured soft music playing in the background, and after the massages, students were offered water to promote rehydration. The college plans to offer two events per quarter, strategically scheduled in conjunction with midterms, finals and national board exams.
