Registration now open for two new Master Woodland Owner classes!
Landowners in northern Minnesota now have two great opportunities to join a Master Woodland Owner cohort in their own backyard. Starting in late July, the Laurentian cohort opens for people in the Iron Range region who are interested in learning more about harvesting timber for forest health and wildlife habitat. Right on their heels in August we will open the North Shore cohort . This section will focus on restoring forest health and long-lived conifers to the North Shore. Both cohorts are eligible for tuition reductions thanks to targeted-area grant funding.
Poison hemlock: what you need to know
Poison hemlock  i s an invasive plant native to Europe and North Africa that is highly toxic (i.e., fatal) to humans and livestock. It  has been recorded in isolated pockets of Minnesota, and appears to be spreading quickly in the St. Charles and Lanesboro areas. Learn how to identify poison hemlock and its common look-alikes; discover management and disposal strategies; and read about its human health impacts on our new poison hemlock information page.
Master Woodland Owners are engaged in woodland stewardship throughout Minnesota
The Master Woodland Owner program recently celebrated its first birthday! At the Gathering Partners of Natural Resources conference held in St. Paul in May, a new class focusing on landowners in the Twin Cities Metro region began. These landowners also had the opportunity to meet participants from the first Master Woodland Owner course that took place in southeastern Minnesota. Read more about the growth of our program for private woodland owners across Minnesota.
Upcoming webinar on status and trends in wildlife habitat
Our webinar last month focused on how timber harvesting can be used to create wildlife habitat. But what about the status and trends in wildlife habitat for Minnesota's species? In this month's webinar, Dr. Mark Nelson with the US Forest Service's Forest Inventory and Analysis unit will discuss these trends and future conditions for forest-dependent wildlife. The webinar will inform forest and wildlife managers, landowners, and others interested in balancing forest productivity and wildlife habitat.
