Healthy Mental Aging
      by Shelly Slaczka

Our loved ones' bodies and minds change at certain ages.  Beginning in a person's 30s, the brain's weight, the network of nerves, and its blood flow begin to decrease.  However, the brain adapts and grows new patterns of nerve endings.  While certain changes in mental abilities are inevitable with age, much remains the same.  Your loved one retains their intellect, ability to change and be flexible.

Here are some ways to help keep a healthy mind:
  • Be physically active.
  • Keep blood pressure down.
  • Keep cholesterol levels low.
  • Eat vegetables.
  • Monitor medication.
  • Drink moderately.
  • Give up smoking.
  • Maintain a healthy weight.
  • Take care of teeth.
  • Keep mentally fit.
  • Reduce stress.
  • Protect brain.
  • Stay socially connected.
  • Positivity.
Forgetfulness is normal in older age; persistent memory loss is not.  Prolonged periods of sadness or depression are not normal with age.  If your loved one experiences any characteristics that are not normal for aging, discuss the symptoms with a physician.
