Commonwealth Shakespeare Company: 
Performance and Discussion on 
Staging Fight Scenes 
July 13th

Actors from the Commonwealth Shakespeare Company will perform and discuss what goes into choreographing a fight scene on Thursday, July 13th. This live performance is in partnership with the Downtown Boston BID. 

Actors and the Company's fight choreographer will talk about what goes into performing a fight on stage, such as the famous duel between Mercutio and Tybalt in the upcoming Shakespeare on the Common performance of "Romeo & Juliet." This event is free and open to the public. It will be at The Steps (corner of Washington and Franklin streets) from noon to 2 pm.

The Dorothy Curran Wednesday Night Concert Series returns to City Hall Plaza on Wednesday, July 12th with Strictly SinatraThis is a free concert that starts at 7 pm

DBRA Summer Sing-along July 12th

The Downtown Boston Residents' Association is hosting a Hollywood Sing-along at the Paramount Center (559 Washington St.) on Wednesday, July 12th

Following the successful sing-alongs last summer and this past Christmas, the DBRA is hosting another sing-along of popular Hollywood songs. The lyrics will be included on the Bright Family Screening Room so everyone can join in.

This free event is open to all. Please register by clicking here. This event is from 6:30 to 8:30 pm, with a cash bar being available starting 6 pm. 
St. Anthony's Shrine Blood Drive 
July 17th

St. Anthony's Shrine (100 Arch St., Basement) is hosting an American Red Cross Blood Drive on Monday, July 17th from 9 am to 2 pm

Free Yoga Classes on Friday  at The Steps by Women's Fitness of Boston

Women's Fitness of Boston (27 School St.) has partnered with the Downtown Boston BID to offer free yoga classes on Fridays. Classes will be at The Steps at Franklin and Washington streets from 5:30 to 6:30 pm.

The class will be a mat workout teaching flexibility, strength and conditioning and incorporate all styles of yoga. This is a drop-in class and no registration is needed. Please bring your own mat.
 
Shakespeare on the Common: 
'Romeo & Juliet' Opens July 19th 

The Commonwealth Shakespeare Company's "Romeo & Juliet" opens its annual free Shakespeare on the Common show on Wednesday, July 19th.

All performances are free and open to the public. But reserved seats are available, too (please see Deals & Promos section). The show runs from July 19th through August 6th. Please click here for more info on showtimes and performances.   
The Genesis Foundation for Children Hosting Young Professionals 
Summer Mixer July 19th

The Genesis Foundation for Children (60 Temple Place) is hosting a Young Professionals Summer Mixer on Wednesday, July 19th

There will be live music, appetizers, games and networking opportunities. Board members of the Genesis Foundation will be on hand. This event is at the Boston Harbor Hotel (70 Rowes Wharf) from 5:30 to 8:30 pm. Tickets are $30 in advance and can be purchased by clicking here, or $35 at the event.
 Admission tickets include appetizers and a drink ticket.
CIC Boston Bike Fair July 20th

CIC Boston (50 Milk St.) is holding a bike fair on Thursday July 20th. A variety of different cycling vendors will be featured, as well as bike advocates.

There will be an electric wheel demonstration, info on bike safety tips and more. This is a free event, but registration is encouraged by clicking here. This event is from 4:30 to 7 pm. This event is being held in CIC Boston's Lighthouse event space on the 20th floor.
 
Broadway Smash 'Wicked' at Boston Opera House Through July 23rd

The award-winning musical "Wicked" is back by popular demand at the Boston Opera House. The show will run for an incredible seven weeks through July 23rd.

The musical is about two girls in the land of Oz -- and how they became the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good. Click here for tickets and showtimes.
 
Historical Play 'Blood On The Snow' at Old State House 

"Blood On The Snow" is a live, dramatic, face-to-face encounter with one of the formative events of the American Revolution. The performance takes place in the very room where it happened in the Old State House (206 Washington St.).The play runs through August 20th.

The play is about the aftermath of the Boston Massacre, as the town's leaders desperately struggle to prevent more bloodshed. 

Due to the intimate nature of this production, there will be no late seating. Only 50 seats will be available per performance.Click here for tickets and showtimes.

Hunter LaMar will perform Tuesday, July 11th and Thursday, July 13th. Hunter LaMar was born in Newark, New Jersey, to a college professor father and a Broadway veteran mother.

The BID's Fountain Music Series at 133 Federal Street Plaza offers live free musical performances on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from noon to 2 pm.
 
Henry Cobb will perform on Wednesday, July 12th and Friday, July 14th. D'Rafael, pictured, will perform on Monday, July 17th.
Downtown Boston 
Bands and  Singers Strolling Streets

The Downtown Boston BID's spring entertainment season features three performance groups who are strolling throughout the Downtown Crossing area.
 
The Downtown Boston Dixieland Band is strolling through the area on Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays twice
 daily from noon to 2 pm and again from  4:30 to 6:30 pm

The Downtown Boston Brass Band is strolling through the area on Sundays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays twice daily from noon to 2 pm and again from 4:30 to 6:30 pm.

The Downtown Boston Singers, a quartet singing group, is strolling through the area performing on Mondays, Thursdays and Fridays from noon to 2 pm and again from 4:30 to 6:30 pm.
'Aviary' Exhibit at 
Lafayette City Center Passageway 

The free art exhibit, "Aviary," is at the Lafayette City Center Passageway and compels passersby to stop, look at the imagery, and not just fly through the hallway.  

The  Lafayette City Center Passageway connects Avenue de Lafayette to Macy's and is  open daily to the public from 10 am to 6 pm .

The exhibit is part of the ongoing photography series at the Passageway by the Griffin Museum of Photography. This exhibit is supported by the Abbey Group, Lafayette City Center and the Downtown Boston Business Improvement District 
St. Paul's Lunchtime Performance Series on Mondays and Thursdays 

The BID's successful lunchtime music series outside of the Cathedral Church of St. Paul (138 Tremont St.) features solo artists performing on Mondays and Thursdays from noon to 2 pm

Austin Lightfoot will perform on Thursday, July 13th. Kathleen Parks, pictured, will perform on Monday, July 17th.

Seating is provided, so bring your lunch and have a seat to enjoy the free entertainment. 
Freedom Trail Foundation 
Tour Schedule for Summer Season

The Freedom Trail Foundation's 18th-century costumed guides will be out on the trail in full force this summer offering more opportunities to bring history to life.  

Walk Into History Tours are daily on the hour 11 am to 4 pm, and a 2:30 tour is available Mondays through Fridays. Tours  leave from the Boston Common Visitor Information Center.  Walk Into History T ours are 90-minute walking tours featuring tales of high treason, mob agitations, revolutionary actions, and partisan fights, walking to 11 of Boston's historic Freedom Trail sites to and from Boston Common and Faneuil Hall.

A Pirates & Patriots Tour departs from the ArtsBoston Booth at Faneuil Hall on Saturdays and Sundays in July and August at 1 pm. 

Freedom Trail Foundation walking tours are $14 for adults, $12 for seniors/students, and $8 for children. Tickets may be purchased at the Visitor Information Center on Boston Common, other area locations and online by clicking here.

Beautiful Window Wraps in Vacant Storefronts by Downtown Boston BID

The Downtown Boston BID has partnered with area property owners to post flower themed window wraps in vacant commercial property windows. 

"The window wraps add color and vibrancy to the streetscape," said Kristen Flanagan, Project Manager for the Downtown Boston BID. The BID is also working with area property owners and managers to help fill vacancies. 

The images being used are closeups of flowers taken by photographer David Lancaster.

The Downtown Boston BID worked with Lindsay Hill Design and Boston Building Wraps to produce the window wraps. The BID would also like to thank property owners Talal Zaiter and Midwood Investment & Development Corporation.

'Beirut to Boston: A Cookbook' 
Now Available 

Chef and part-owner of Yvonne's, Jay Hajj, recently released "Beirut to Boston: A Cookbook," which focuses on comfort food inspired by his rags-to-restaurants story. 

The cookbook includes recipes from Food Network star Guy Fieri, Ken Oringer, Ming Tsai and more.

Hajj was 5-years-old when the Beirut Bus Massacre occurred outside his family's apartment and ignited the Lebanon Civil War. His mother struggled to feed four children while often staying in shelters to avoid shootings. His father served in the Lebanese army. His family eventually immigrated to Boston in 1978. Hajj eventually found refuge in kitchens of local restaurants and became a well respected chef.

He is now a frequent guest on the Food Network, is the chef and owner of Mike's City Diner, and is one of the partners behind Yvonne's.

The SPARK Boston Council is seeking new members for the September 2017 to September 2018 term. SPARK Boston is Mayor Walsh's leadership and engagement council for the 20-to-34 age bracket, who believe in the power of civic engagement. BID Little Free Library at 
Walgreens Plaza

The Downtown Boston BID's Little Free Library is outside of Walgreens on Washington Street and is very popular. Readers are welcome to take a book, and encouraged to leave a book. People are also welcome to donate books by leaving them at the library or contacting Kristen Flanagan at [email protected] to organize a pickup in the downtown area.

The BID's Little Free Library is officially registered with the Little Free Library non-profit organization. There are actually more than 50,000 registered little free libraries across the country and world!
 
The BID's Little Free Library is open 10 am to 6 pm daily (closed during inclement weather). 
Vendors Wanted for 2017 
Downtown Boston  Arts & Crafts Market

The Downtown Boston BID is seeking vendors for the 
Downtown Boston Arts & Crafts Market program for 2017 to sell their products. The market is at Readers Park by the Irish Famine Memorial at the corner of Washington and School streets. The market operates on Wednesdays and Fridays through September 29th. 

All artwork, crafts and food offerings must be original and handmade by you or your studio or enterprise. No mass-produced goods are allowed.

The Downtown Boston Arts & Crafts Market accepts arts and crafts in the following categories: fiber arts, fine art (painting, photography, sculpture), Christmas ornaments and holiday items, Judaica, blown glass, stained glass, clay/ceramics, metal, wood furniture, clothing and accessories, children's clothing and toys, pet items, jewelry, artisan foods, personal products (soap and fragrances), home decor and more.
