Vatican Releases Important Online Questionnaire for Youth and Young Adults

PLEASE HELP US GET THIS SURVEY INTO THE HANDS (SMARTPHONES) OF OUR YOUTH AND YOUNG ADULTS

From Catholic News Agency in Vatican City:

To involve young people in preparations for the Synod of Bishops on youth in 2018, the Vatican has released an online questionnaire to better understand the lives, attitudes and concerns of 16- to 29-year-olds around the world. The questionnaire - available in English, Spanish, French and Italian is open to any young person, regardless of faith or religious belief. Young people from all backgrounds are encouraged to take part in the questionnaire because every young person has "the right to be accompanied without exclusion," synod officials had said.

Living as Missionary Disciples  released by USCCB

WASHINGTON, DC - Earlier this month, the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops' Committee on Evangelization and Catechesis released a new document entitled Living as Missionary Disciples - A Resource for Evangelization . It was created with the assistance of the Catholic Apostolate Center, which is acknowledged on page v of the booklet.   You can  purchase the document in print  form directly from the USCCB or  view it online  as an eBook for free.

Living as Missionary Disciples provides dioceses, parishes, and other church ministries with a road map to "new paths for the Church's journey" of evangelization.  It is not intended to provide a ready-made program for a parish to follow or a detailed strategic plan to implement. Rather, it offers principles that dioceses and parishes can apply to their efforts in evangelization and missionary discipleship. The USCCB Committee on Evangelization and Catechesis has also   developed worksheets to assist  leaders in sharing the main points of the document. Additionally, the committee has designated this year's Catechetical Sunday theme to revolve around missionary discipleship.

The Effective DRE: A Theology Series

The DRE is introduced to the challenging task of assisting parishes and catechists in their efforts to build unity among Christians. The message that Christians have more that unites them than divides them is one that is strongly reinforced here, and should give every believer cause for hope.

The United States Conference of Catholic Bishop
is publishing a series of articles entitled, "Faces of Migration" Click here to view articles .  As the name implies, the goal is to tell the story of individual migrants.  Parishes interested in presentations on, or resources related to, Catholic teaching on immigration are invited to contact the Office for Social Ministry at the Catholic Center.
The Office of Social Ministry is seeking nominations from pastors for a representative from the Diocese to the Missouri Catholic Conference Public Policy Committee (PPC). Please send names and contact information to Nick Lund-Molfese at [email protected].

The PPC is made up of 15 people appointed by the Board of Directors (Missouri Bishops). These members represent each of the four dioceses in Missouri. The number of representatives from each diocese reflects its Catholic population.

Each member serves a three-year term and is required to attend approximately four meetings in Jefferson City. Those appointed have diverse areas of expertise in areas including education, health, social welfare, government relations, policy analysis, and formation. The role of the PPC is to provide expertise/experience in reviewing pending legislation, mobilize Catholics for legislative action and assist with the Missouri Catholic Conference (MCC) Annual Assembly. The PPC also serves as an advisory body to the Board of Directors on legislation

Parish and School Report of Completions
PAST DUE NOTICE!!!

Reports of Completion are due to the diocese by
April 15, 2017.  This information is required for annual audit reports--without this information we are out of compliance.   This information is needed now.  Note that along with the report you are to attach a list of parish/school employees and all volunteers who work with children.

When these lists have arrived at our office, it has become evident that many of volunteers or employees have not completed one or more of the safe environment requirements (Virtus training, background check, 2016-17 Code of Conduct).  We would like to have as many of these deficits taken care of by the end of this month so we can begin compiling numbers for the USCCB auditors.

For your convenience, the 2017 Report of Completion is attached.  If you need copies of the lessons, please contact the Office of Child and Youth Protection.

Preventing Peer-to-Peer Abuse

The Associated Press recently released an article chronicling the mishandling of peer-to-peer abuse in schools across the country. The following excerpt from "Hidden Horror of School Sex Assaults" explains how pervasive this risk is:

Contrary to public perception, data showed that student sexual assaults by peers were far more common than those by teachers. For every adult-on-child sexual attack reported on school property, there were seven assaults by students, AP's analysis of the federal crime data showed.

Fortunately, peer-to-peer abuse is preventable through monitoring and supervision.

Here are some tips to prevent peer-to-peer abuse in your organization:
  1. Train staff on the risks of peer-to-peer sexual activity.  If our staff doesn't know that peer-to-peer sexual activity can happen, we can't expect them to know how to prevent it. Train staff on what peer-to-peer abuse is, how it occurs, and how to report incidents or allegations.
  2. Create monitoring plans for high-risk activities. Certain activities - such as transition times, free times, bathroom activities, transportation, etc. - increase the risk of peer-to-peer sexual activity. Create risk-specific monitoring plans where staff are assigned specific duties during these high-risk activities.

  3. Create plans for monitoring facilities.  Peer-to-peer abuse typically occurs when youths find privacy.  This privacy can be found in stairwells, out-of- the- way locations, blind spots around corners, under tables, in closed rooms, in rooms without windows, etc.  Identify these high-risk locations and create facility specific monitoring plans where staff are assigned specific locations to monitor.

  4. Monitor staff compliance with supervision policies.  Staff get tired, they get busy, and they get comfortable with the program participants. Supervisors need to make sure that staff follow your organization's monitoring procedures.  Create checklists for supervisors to complete at each program location to ensure compliance.
