SUMMER LOVIN' - Reese and Beckett Hansen are having fun and working hard with the cows this summer. Did you know July is National Ice Cream Month? AppleBees the cow and the Hansen kids hope you enjoy some delicious Hansen's ice cream this month! Make sure you like our Facebook page to participate in some special contests throughout July.

Cash Cow

We had two winners in our June CA$H COW contest. Congrats to Kevin Kamienski of Cedar Falls and Sidecar Coffee Shop in Waterloo, who each found a $5 jug. Since no one found any $100 jugs, we will label seven jugs with $100 in July. Best chance to find one is right away at the beginning of the month! But make sure to keep looking throughout the month as we mark ten $5 jugs every week!

Look inside the jug toward the label to see a "5" or "100".

Independence Day store hours
Our personal Lady Liberty wants to wish you a happy Fourth of July! Our cows don't enjoy fireworks, but hopefully you will be able to celebrate with your families as we mark our nation's independence.

Hansen's Dairy stores will be open regular hours on July 4. Hansen's Gasoline will be closing early at 9 p.m. on July 4. Enjoy the fireworks and be safe!
Thanks to Hy-Vee for marking June Dairy Month with us
Thanks for stopping to see us last month at Hy-Vee during June Dairy Month! Hansen's Dairy products are now being sold at all six Cedar Valley Hy-Vee grocery stores.

Scooter the baby kangaroo was a hit with customers of all ages (see photo above). Visitors got to sample Hansen's butter, cheese curds and milk.

In addition, we hosted a cooking demonstration and catered meal with Ansborough Hy-Vee dietitian Beth Barber at the farm's Tour Center.

The presentation was awesome, and the meal of Garlic Butter Chicken, Cheese Curd Panzanella and Chilled Strawberry Soup (all using Hansen's Dairy products) was amazing! We hope to host more of these events in the future.

Customer of the Month
Lew Everling and family
The July Customer of the Month is Lew Everling of Waterloo.

Hansen's products are a staple at the Everling house.

"We shop at Hansen's to support local business and the awesome friendly staff that makes our trips fun," Lew says. "We love that we know where the products are coming from and that the Hansens support the local communities as well."

Lew and his family stop in for pints and cones quite often for a treat, but they also enjoy having Hansen's products on hand at home.

"The white cheddar and red pepper curds we use for snacks around the house," Lew says. "We love the fresh butter for homemade waffles, and the cream we use for fresh whipping cream on those waffles. Sprinkle with chopped English walnuts or pecans topped with some fresh strawberries - 'oooh, it's so good' as Mr. Food would say!"

Thanks, Lew! Customers of the Month will receive a $5 gift certificate to use at our stores and two free hands-on tour passes to the farm (a $24 value). You could be chosen by filling out an entry form at our stores or through your comments on our Facebook and Twitter pages.
Cow of the Month
The July Cow of the Month will celebrate a double-digit birthday this month.

Dayz turns 10 on July 31. She has given birth to eight calves - five heifers and three bulls. Her most recent calf was born about three weeks ago.

She just surpassed 200,000 pounds of milk and 6,500 pounds of butterfat in lifetime production. That butterfat is what we use to produce our ice cream, so we appreciate Dayz for contributions, especially during National Ice Cream Month in July!

Dayz is one of the oldest cows in the herd, and can be a little stubborn in her old age. But if we let her do her own thing, she's just fine. Cows have a lifespan of about 15 years, so she will most certainly live out her "dayz" on the Hansen farm!

Recipe
Cooking with Hansen's
This high-protein, high-fiber salad comes together in no time. For a different flavor combination, try a pepperjack or smoked pepperjack instead of the sharp cheddar. Starred ingredients can be purchased at Hansen's Dairy stores.

INGREDIENTS
  • 2 tablespoons Dijon mustard
  • 2 tablespoons cider vinegar
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons California Olive Ranch extra-virgin olive oil*
  • 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
  • ¼ cup red onion, minced
  • ½ cup celery, sliced
  • 2 15-ounce cans 50% less sodium beans (garbanzo, kidney or black), drained and rinsed
  • 4 ounces sharp cheddar cheese, cut into ¼ inch cubes*
DIRECTIONS
In a large bowl combine Dijon mustard, cider vinegar, salt, sugar, black pepper and olive oil; whisk until well mixed.
Add remaining ingredients to large bowl with vinaigrette and mix until evenly coated. Serve chilled or at room temperature.
