New Year, New Job, New You with Memphis Public Library's JobLINC

JobLINC Career Fair 2016

Memphis Public Libraries are equipping customers with the tools they need to be successful in the New Year! Job seekers hoping to launch or expand their careers will find what they're searching for through the Library's JobLINC Service.
JobLINC's services are also on wheels! The JobLINC Bus is constantly on the move helping Memphians to move forward in their careers. The January 2017 JobLINC Bus Schedule has been released! Click here to view it. Whether the bus stops at a library, church, community center, parking lot or apartment complex, customers can take advantage of on-the-spot workshops hosted by job referral agents, enjoy one-on-one assistance from experts, and find the help they need to polish their resumes.
"Our mission is to 'satisfy the customer's need to know,' and we do that by going into the community and meeting our customers where they are. We even provide information on who's hiring," said Robyn Jonston, senior manager of JobLINC.

Free Tax Prep Services at Memphis Public Libraries

Tax Prep at Library
It's that time of year again - tax time - but with free tax preparation services through AARP and FTP (formerly VITA) at Memphis Public Libraries, some customers will avoid the headache and save some cash in the process.
Thanks to a partnership with Memphis Public Libraries and United Way, free tax services will begin at the end of January and run through April 2017. Customers who qualify can reserve their appointments by calling 2-1-1 or (901) 415-2790.
AARP volunteers will provide free federal income tax filing assistance to customers of all ages, but customers 60 years and older will receive preference. Individuals or families with annual household incomes of $54,000 or less are eligible for Free Tax Preparation (FTP) Services.

TEENS

Open Call Underway for Library's Teen Advisory Council
Teen Planning Meeting
Memphis Public Library's Teen Services Division is looking for a few good (young) men and women who resolve to make a difference in the New Year!
The Teen Advisory Council of the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library (3030 Poplar Ave.) is open to Memphis Public Library cardholders between the ages of 13 - 18. This collaborative body of teen volunteers from around the Mid-South will help to enhance the overall experience for all teens visiting Memphis Public Libraries. Each month, council members will meet to brainstorm and plan new ideas for current and future Library programs, identify social and political issues that affect teens, and discuss the latest trends in books, music, films, art and technology.
This resume-boosting opportunity doesn't end there, however. Council members will serve one-year terms (August 2017 - May 2018) with no consecutive term limits. Teens may also serve as officers on the board: President, vice-president, secretary and scribe.

It's never too early to teach your child the computer skills needed in tomorrow's work world. Memphis Public Libraries are helping to prepare students in today's classrooms for tomorrow's boardrooms through a free Computer Basics Class for Kids starting February 2 - March 23, 2017 at the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library (3030 Poplar Ave.).
During the eight-week course, offered on Thursdays from 6 p.m. - 7 p.m., students in grades 3 - 6 will learn accuracy and speed in typing, Microsoft Word and PowerPoint, how to safely and effectively research using the Internet, and basic functions on tablets and e-readers. In addition to basic computer skills, kids will gain the tools they need to score well on the typing portion of Tennessee standardized tests.
