"There is extensive planning for our book sales," noted Friends of the Library president Jacqueline Wallace. "We have some very dedicated volunteers, who work behind the scenes in the sorting room and, at any given time, they keep more than 80,000 books, CDs, DVDs and vinyls organized! Our book sales are a year-long project whereby we set aside the best items to offer our customers."

Returning customers will notice more Spanish books than ever before, and all  items - from specialty books and magazines to cassettes and sheet music - will be priced to move. So, customers can stretch a few dollars a long way!

ADULTS

Library Staff Advocates for Literacy and Lifelong Learning in Memphis

Avid readers no longer have to make mind-boggling decisions about what to read next. Before customers ever enter the doors, members of Memphis Public Libraries' staff are trained on how to assist readers of all ages with their book selections and reading lists.

Readers' Advisory Generic Graphic
"A successful readers' advisory service is one in which knowledgeable, nonjudgmental staff help fiction and nonfiction readers with their leisure reading needs," explained Joyce Saricks, author of the book "Readers' Advisory Service in the Public Library."

"We strive to be there, ready to lend a helping hand, any time our customers need us," added Director of Memphis Public Libraries Keenon McCloy. "Staff members do much more than guess what might interest our customers. They receive formal training on how to keep readers actively engaged in books and excited about lifelong learning. Ultimately, our team works tirelessly as advocates for literacy in Memphis."

Library's New Early Literacy Centers Offer Free, Educational Fun!

Early Literacy Center - Central Library 04292017
It's never too early to discover the joy of reading with a child. DiscoverREAD is a new initiative at Memphis Public Libraries that gives parents and caregivers the tools they need to build early literacy skills in youth from birth to age five. But that's not all! Designed by the American Academy of Pediatrics' Universal Parenting Place, this hands-on model conjoins reading, singing, playing, talking and writing to support learning and increased parental involvement.

Thanks to the Memphis Library Foundation, Friends of the Library and Baptist Memorial Health Care, several of these new educational spaces are coming to Memphis Public Libraries. The Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library (3030 Poplar Ave.) will host a grand opening for its new DiscoverREAD Early Literacy Center at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 10, 2017. This event is free and open to the public.

The first DiscoverREAD Center at Memphis Public Libraries opened in March 2017 at Cornelia Crenshaw Library (531 Vance Ave.), and more educational centers are on the way!
