Close to 30 theological ethicists gathered for a Selected Session at the annual Convention of the Catholic Theological Society of America, which met in Albuquerque, New Mexico, on June 8-11. Nichole Flores moderated the Selected Session, "Ecological Conversion, Spirituality and Solidarity," which was related to the Convention's ecological theme this year. It consisted of two papers--first, "Ecological Conversion: A Call for Personal and Social Transformation" by Christopher Vogt and, second, "The Ethics of Our Climate: Conversion and Ecology" by William O'Neill SJ. Good discussion followed during the question and answer period. A report on these papers will be published and available on-line in the CTSA Proceedings later this summer. In addition, for the final 15 minutes of the session, Jim Keenan SJ and Linda Hogan provided an update on plans for next year's CTEWC gathering in Sarajevo, and we celebrated the welcome release of The Bible and Catholic Theological Ethics, edited by Yiu Sing Lúcás Chan, James Keenan SJ, and Ronaldo Zacharias, published by Orbis Books.

Summer School in Vienna: Ecumenical and interreligious approaches to Bioethics
Prof. Sigrid Müller, dean of the Theological Faculty of the University of Vienna, organised an international Summer School on bioethics from 12th to 18th June 2017. 20 students from Croatia, Serbia, Romania, Hungary, Slovenia, Slovakia, The Czech Republic, Austria, Germany and Cameron followed the lessons given by the lecturers from Austria, Romania, Hungary and Slovenia. Stefan Iloaie from Cluj, Romania, presented an orthodox approach to bioethics, Stefan Tobler from Sibiu, Romania, spoke about a protestant approach, Roman Globokar from Ljubljana, Slovenia presented a catholic approach and Abdullah Takim from Vienna, Austria spoke about Bioethics from an Islamic perspective. The title of the lesson of Gusztav Kovacs from Pecs, Hungary was The Bioethics of Gilead - Religion, Gender and Politics in Margaret Atwood's Fiction. The atmosphere was very friendly and dialogic. The participants agreed the dialog is the only possible way in the search for the answer about bioethical issues.

A new book on animal ethics written by Martin M. Lintner
Martin M. Lintner, professor of Theological Ethics at the Philosophical-Theological College in Brixen, Italy, and member of CTEWC has released a new book on animal ethics. He formulates and founds an animal ethical categorical imperative: "Act in such a way that you treat an animal never merely as a means to an end by reducing it to its utility for humans, but always at the same time by doing justice to the species-specific and individual needs and abilities of an animal."
The book starts with a large reflection on the biblical order to subdue the earth and to have dominion over the animals (cf. Gen 1,29) as well as on the biblical relationship between men and animals. The second chapter treats philosophical questions, e.g. the ethical relevance of common ground, similarities, and differences between men and animals, and the questions whether animals have a dignity or a value proper to each creature, whether they are subjects of rights or moral objects. The third chapter is devoted to various issues of applied ethics like pet keeping, intensive livestock farming, animal keeping in zoos and circuses, hunting etc. A large chapter is dedicated to the ethical questions regarding meat consumption and consumption of other animal products. The author shows the complex links between animal ethics, ecological sustainability and social justice towards farmers. The last and forth chapter again reflects on theological issues such as ecological spirituality, the inclusion of all creatures in the salvific action of Jesus Christ. Ultimately, the book tries to answer the question whether animals will go to haven.
The chapters of the book are written by Christoph J. Amor, professor of Dogmatics, and Markus Moling, professor of Philosophy in Brixen. This shows the interdisciplinary approach of the publication.
The authors want to take up the call of Pope Francis who, in Laudato si urges a new reflection on animals and strongly criticizes a distorted anthropocentrism.
The book launch took place on June 22, 2017, in the Alpenzoo near Innsbruck (Austria), a zoo in which are kept over 2000 animals of 150 species who are or have been typical for the Alps.

TEÓLOGOS HISPANOS DE AMBOS LADOS DE LA FRONTERA

Quisiéramos compartir con ustedes nuestra experiencia que terminó asistiendo al Coloquio de ACHTUS de este año en Albuquerque (4-7 de junio) Somos un grupo de alumnos que forma parte del Seminario de Ética en el Departamento de Ciencias Religiosas de la Universidad Iberoamericana, México. El director del seminario, Dr. Miguel Ángel Sánchez, nos platicó acerca del Coloquio a principios de año. Desde un inicio nos entusiasmó la idea de participar haciendo una pequeña investigación para compartir, misma que el profesor Sánchez llevaría, sin embargo, asistir era muy apetecible, aunque necesitábamos primero resolver la parte económica. Nuestra primera idea fue juntar lo suficiente para uno de nosotros y así decidimos hacer una rifa. La solución vino cuando una artista, madre de uno de nosotros, nos donó un cuadro. Rápidamente hicimos los boletos y empezamos a vender, pero Dios tenía un plan mejor. La universidad anunció un programa de movilidad estudiantil que apoya a los alumnos para que asistan a congresos, coloquios, estadías cortas de investigación, etc., y decidimos aplicar. Por otro lado, MT Davila nos dio un increíble apoyo, primero no tuvimos que pagar la cuota de asistencia al coloquio y después, ¡nos dio el alojamiento! Obtuvimos el apoyo de la universidad y teníamos el dinero de la rifa lo que significaba que tres de nosotros podíamos ir. Para poner la cereza en el pastel, MT nos organizó un panel, así que no solo asistíamos sino que además teníamos la oportunidad de compartir, desde una perspectiva mexicana, nuestra visión sobre el tema de Liberar a los cautivos. Luz Elena Arozqueta habló del derecho a migrar, pero antes, el derecho a no migrar y cómo la exclusión que lleva a un ser humano a tomar la decisión de dejar su país en búsqueda de una vida mejor termina con otra exclusión en el nuevo país. Hilda Ortiz Mena habló de la disparidad entre el discurso gubernamental y la realidad que viven los migrantes centroamericanos en su paso por México. Cómo las Estaciones Migratorias que supuestamente atienden a los migrantes y salvaguardan su integridad respetando sus derechos son en la práctica unas cárceles. Hugo Garibay comparó las Casas de Migrantes con las Iglesias que apoyan al Sanctuary Movement en los Estados Unidos y quienes abren sus puertas para proteger a los migrantes y ayudarles en sus procesos legales. Miguel Ángel Sánchez habló de la situación en las prisiones mexicanas donde el control está en manos del crimen organizado. Recibimos una recepción muy positiva a nuestro trabajo que nos dejó muy agradecidos y felices. Nuestro contacto con ACHTUS fue a través de gente en CTEWC, como MT Davila, y ahora con este impulso estamos pensando en asociarnos como miembros de ACHTUS para crear articulaciones que nos permitan organizar encuentros como éste en el futuro, tanto a nivel nacional como internacional. CTEWC y ACHTUS han sido maravillosos al dar impulso a la reflexión ética teológica. Finalmente, disfrutamos mucho el tiempo compartido y conocer colegas latinos y negros que viven en EU, escuchar los trabajos de investigación, aprender las nuevas formas de racismo del sistema penitenciario, y sobre todo, recordar el inmenso trabajo que tenemos frente a nosotros como teólogos.

- Celito Moro: Aqui na minha região, Sul do Brasil, aconteceu de 29/01 a 01/06 o Congresso Estadual de teologia que reuniu os professores de todos os institutos de teologia católicos, anglicanos, Luteranos do Brasil (Missuri)l e Luteranos no Brasil (alemães). Entre professores, teólogas, teólogas e alunos e açlunas, participaram mais de 250 pessoas. O tema do congresso foi: "O fazer teológico: Igrejas em Reforma na Modernidade". O Congresso realizou-se na Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio grande do Sul, em Porto Alegre.
ARGENTINA
- Pablo Blanco: En vísperas del segundo aniversario de la publicación de la encíclica "Laudato Si'', el Centro Bíblico, Teológico, Pastoral Para América Latina y El Caribe del CELAM (Cebitepal) y la Pontificia Universidad Católica Argentina (UCA), organizaron - en la sede la UCA de la ciudad de Buenos Aires - un "Seminario Jornada sobre Ecología Integral". La actividad se planteó el desafío de pensar América Latina desde la Ecología integral planteada por el Papa Francisco. La jornada inaugurada por el Rector Monseñor Víctor Fernández (UCA), contó con la participación de distintos especialistas y referentes eclesiales, entre ellos: Fray Eduardo Agosta (Programa de ecología integral del CELAM), Alirio Cáceres (DEJUSOL-CELAM), Lucio Florio (UCA), Pablo A. Blanco (CTEWC-UCA) y Monseñor Julio Bonino (Uruguay), quienes analizaron el impacto, los alcances y las tareas pendientes que representa el cuidado de la casa común desde la perspectiva de Laudato Si. Participaron de este seminario representantes y referentes de otras instituciones como la Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA), Universidad Nacional de la Plata (UNLP), Red LAPSI, Cáritas Argentina, Centros de Doctrina Social de la Iglesia del Cono Sur, Organizaciones de la Sociedad Civil y redes por la Ecología y el Medio Ambiente.
- Anibal Torres: En el pre congresos de laicos del cono sur, organizado por el Consejo Episcopal Latinoamericano (CELAM) en el Colegio Máximo de San José (San Miguel, Argentina, del 23 al 25 de mayo), Aníbal Torres expuso sobre la temática "Iglesia pobre y para los pobres. Programa de reforma eclesial en la globalización de la indiferencia". En junio Aníbal Torres publicó una nueva entrada en la sección Argentina del Observatorio sobre Religión y Asuntos Públicos en América Latina. - Verónica Naranjo, participó en el III CONGRESO IBEROAMERICANO DE FILOSOFÍA PRÁCTICA, ejecutado del 23 al 26 de mayo en la Universidad Autónoma de Estado de Morelos, Cuernavaca, México, con la ponencia: "Desafíos de la bioética a partir de las categorías: cuerpo y dolor en el final de la vida" y con la presentación de su libro "Deconstrucción y construcción del cuerpo de la mujer en las técnicas de reproducción asistida humana. Una perspectiva teológica y bioética". Desde principio de año en Colombia se ha realizado un aumento del IVA a productos como las toallas higiénica y tampones, esto ha ocasionado que las mujeres se sientas excluido en los beneficios que debe brindar la sociedad para ayudar a algo tan natural como es el ciclo menstrual, para ello el grupo de Estudio Talita Qumi (en el cual es integrante Verónica Naranjo), que viene trabajando temas referente a la mujer desde el 2016, ha montado un taller llamado "La creatividad en el ciclo femenino", este se llevará a cabo el 20 de junio del 2017 y allí se busca hacer conciencia de los dones del ciclo menstrual a nivel biológico y en la vida cotidiana, además de brindar la formación para el uso de las toallas ecológicas, siendo esto una respuesta a lo sucedido en el aumento del costo de estos productos en Colombia.

- Chile vive un tiempo muy especial después del anuncio de la visita de Francisco para Enero próximo. Tanto la comunidad creyente como las instituciones civiles, la Iglesia y el Gobierno, han hecho ver su alegría y sus expectativas por esta magnífica oportunidad para dialogar como país acerca de nuestros desafíos de justicia social. Los lugares que Francisco visitará son por lo demás muy estratégicos: en primer lugar Iquique, en el norte, una zona marcada por la inmigración y la actividad minera; luego Temuco, capital de la Araucanía, una zona muy marcada por la violencia y el difícil diálogo entre el pueblo mapuche y las instituciones civiles; y finalmente Santiago, la capital donde vive casi un tercio de los habitantes del país.
- Marcelo Correa: Noticias de nuestra Facultad de Ciencias Religiosas y Filosóficas de la Universidad Católica del Maule: Estamos inaugurando un nuevo Plan de Desarrollo Estratégico que nos permite potencias la investigación a través de áreas de Concentración temáticas y de problemas. Una de estas áreas es Ética y Sociedad en la que estoy inscrito. en esta área estamos abordando la investigación y el postgrado en Ética y Formación Ciudadana para fortalecer el desarrollo de la participación democrática, tan débil en nuestra región latinoamericana. Este es un proyecto innovador en Chile y que es exigido por la ciudadanía y el gobierno. Por otro lado, como Facultad estamos participando y liderando un proyecto de investigación con emigrantes en la Región del Maule, donde se ubica nuestra Universidad. Este proyecto trabaja la reflexión del fenómeno Migratorio y el desarrollo de los emigrantes que han llegado en alto porcentaje a nuestra provincia que se caracteriza por ser tradicional y agrícola. Es un desafío importante la aceptación del otro cuando es un extraño tanto en el color de su piel, su fisonomía, sus costumbres, sus comprensiones de la vida que nos piden colaboración para reiniciar sus vida en nuestra tierra.

NEW FACES OF RELIGIOUS FUNDAMENTALISM AND VIOLENCE
In principle, all religions stand for peace, harmony and love. However, in practice, religion has also led to a lot of violence and bloodshed. For all religions, God is love. But it is not rare that in the name of God who is love hatred and violence are advocated. Perhaps no religion is an exception to this. Religious fundamentalism and intolerance and violence springing from fundamentalist approaches to religion are not new. But today religious fundamentalism has assumed new modes, often leading to terrorism, threatening global peace, and the very existence of humanity. What are the reasons for such a violent outbreak of religious fundamentalism in almost all regions of the world? Is there still a ray of hope? Can we think about ways of peaceful co-existence?

Online short courses offered by Catherine of Siena College (University of Roehampton) are off to an excellent start, and students from different parts of the globe are signing up and enjoying them. So far, students have been able to take courses on Women and the Catholic Church, Migration Matters, Violence against Women and Spirituality and Social Action. iolence against women: War, the Domestic Sphere and Religion profoundly educative, inspiring and eye-opening. Learning the various course themes from the standpoint of a man and a religious leader, I was awakened to crucial aspects pertaining to violence against women I was oblivious to owing to patriarchal cultural upbringing and espoused religious traditions that were often characterized by marginalization and oppression of women. Evidently coming from highly informed positions of the subject area, the course instructors presented the material in a thought-provoking manner that shaped strong gender-conscious theological convictions in me. I strongly recommend religious leaders of different faiths to take this course.
