BIG NEWS @ YOUR LIBRARY!

Memphis Public Libraries Extend Hours of Operation

Central Library Photo
Memphis Public Libraries have increased hours of operation, adding 145 hours per week to Library operations. The changes affect 16 Memphis Public Libraries citywide. All Library locations within the city of Memphis and Bartlett Library will now be open six days a week.

The increase - which was made possible by funding increases in the City's budget for fiscal year 2018 - includes $475,000 to hire 20 part-time assistant librarians and an additional $50,000 to enhance Library programs and services.
"Additional hours of operation mean better service for youth and their families, working individuals and the entire city of Memphis," noted Director of Libraries Keenon McCloy.  "We are especially excited to expand Library hours in time for summer, so that more customers can explore what Memphis Public Libraries have to offer, such as Explore Memphis 2017, CLOUD901, our STEAM programming for youth and so much more."

Libraries' Summer Program Encourages Families to 'Explore Memphis'

Children's Programs
Local families are invited to explore the Bluff City this summer, now - July 31, 2017, starting at Memphis Public Libraries! Explore Memphis, the Library's summer learning program, offers customers a chance to read, participate, explore and share educational and fun experiences all summer long.
The largest program of its kind in Memphis Public Libraries, Explore Memphis is a fully-customizable summer experience offering age-appropriate programs centered on science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics for children, teens and adults. Whether helping students to avoid the "summer slide" or connecting adult readers with other book enthusiasts, this summer program will include hundreds of interactive programs like yoga, ice-cream making, author meet and greets, magic shows and more at all 18 Memphis Public Library locations. Then, using their Library cards, customers can receive free or discounted admission to several local attractions.
"Explore Memphis is an ideal time for families to familiarize themselves with all that Memphis Public Libraries and the city of Memphis have to offer," said Director of Libraries Keenon McCloy. "We invite customers of all ages to start here. There are fun and educational programs for people of all ages - free entertainment that's the perfect addition to anyone's stay-cation this summer."

ADULTS

New Adult Storytimes Now Available at Central Library!

Generic Storytime Photo
Library customers don't have to be young to enjoy a good story - just young at heart! Memphis Public Library's new Adult Storytime is planned for 10 a.m., each Wednesday in the Memphis and Shelby County Room of the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library (3030 Poplar Ave., 4th floor).

All adult customers are welcomed to attend the storytimes, but they are designed specifically for adults with special needs.

"We developed this storytime because several organizations who serve adults with Autism, Down Syndrome and other intellectual disabilities had requested a program for adults similar to children's storytimes, but one was not available," noted Central Library's History Department Manager Wayne Dowdy. "Our hope is that Adult Storytime will benefit Memphis' adult special needs population by providing a structured program that will stimulate their thought processes and provide positive social interactions."
