Unexpected Things
"Libraries were sharing before sharing was cool, says Miguel Figueroa, director of the American Library Association's Center for the Future of Libraries (" The Library of Things" | American Libraries 6.1.17)
 
At the request of State Librarian Bernie Margolis, MHLS recently conducted a survey of member libraries entitled "The Lending of Unexpected Things" to provide an accounting of unusual items that libraries in our region are lending.
 
Some of the most unexpected findings?
  • Five libraries lend ukuleles!    
  • One library lends a sewing machine!    
  • Twenty-seven libraries offer museum passes!    
  • Two libraries lend gardening tools, one even lends a leaf blower!

MHLS Announcements

MHLS will be closed in observance of Independence Day on Tuesday, July 4th. There will be no MHLS Delivery Services or Tech Support Services.
Resource Sharing & Sierra
Sierra Release upgrade to 3.1 was successfully completed on  June 29th, 2017.
 
Here's what the upgrade addressed:

  • Web Management Reports no longer require Java!

  • Performance improvements for exporting review files especially for databases with high numbers of linked records. 

  • Performance improvements for exporting records from Data Exchange especially for databases with high numbers of linked records

  • Performance improvements for keyword searching in Encore especially for databases with high numbers of linked records

  • New Sierra Holdshelf architecture: Provides increased stability and data integrity.

  • Create Lists supports searching for items by hold On Holdshelf and Pickup By dates.  You will see two new fields to select under the holds tab.

  • The maximum number of entries for the Branches Table has been increased from 3,600 to 10,000.
Encore Release Upgrade to 4.6 was successfully c ompleted on June 29th, 2017. Here's what the upgrade addressed:
  • Meets new PCI compliance standards for credit card payments.

  • Facets have been redesigned with checkboxes allowing users to select multiple terms within a facet to filter their search results. Example: you can choose to limit your search to multiple formats

Job Openings
The Putnam Valley Library is looking for a part-time Children's Librarian. This position is 21 hours per week. Tuesday 4:00-7:00 pm, Wednesday 4:00 - 7:00 pm and Saturday 10:00 am - 4:00 pm. The part-time Children's Librarian will be solely responsible for designing and deploying afterschool and weekend regular children's programming as well as participating in collection development initiatives with the director and collection maintenance with the children's clerk. The candidate will be responsible for the children's floor during the hours above including reference, homework help and activities. This position requires an MLS however, candidates who are currently enrolled in an accredited MLS program are encouraged to apply. Experience with children a must. As well as desire to be part of a team whose mission is to provide educational and recreational opportunities to all. Spanish and experience with Sierra a plus but not required. Salary $15 per hour.
