St. Michael's Academy
  :

We had a week filled with both bittersweet joy and energetic fun. The bittersweet joy was saying goodbye to our 8th grade students who graduated this past Tuesday evening. It was a beautiful ceremony at St. Michael's Cathedral. Thank you to Msgr. Connelly, Msgr. Liston and Fr. Mengel for celebrating Mass with us.

The fun side of things happened during two field days this week. On Wednesday, our PreK, Kindergarten and 1st grade students had a beautiful day outside enjoying the various games that could be found all around the outside of the school.  The 5th, 6th and 7th grade students enjoyed their field day today and I heard there was quite a tug of war between the 5th grade boys and girls.  I won't tell you who won but I could hear high pitched squeals of joy from Nathan Bill Park all the way from my office! Our final field day will be held on Monday (weather permitting) for grades 2, 3 and 4.

Unfortunately, we are having difficulties with the photo galleries on our website. Please check back next week and we will have all the photos available from the individual events for your viewing.

Happy Father's Day to all of our SMA men who truly make a difference in the lives of those they love. Enjoy a great day and a great weekend!

Peace,

Ann E. Dougal

From The Classroom of Mrs. Duplessis - Music

Things Are Busy in the Music World

We've had an eventful last couple months in music!  The students worked very hard to prepare for our Second Annual Arts Night, which featured the Middle School Choir, Honors Recorder students in 4th, 5th, and 6th grade, and several soloists. The Choir, as well as students in 4th and 5th grade, led the congregation in song at the last three masses,Choir performed at graduation, and 3rd grade students are currently preparing to sing at mass on the last day of school.  Additionally,  students in 2nd grade led the school at the May Crowning, Kindergarten students are preparing for their Closing Ceremony  on Friday, and 4th and 5th grade students are working to finish their Recorder Karate books and earn their belts before the end of the year. Preschoolers and students in 1st grade have had fun learning songs and games and playing instruments, including the xylophone, tom tom, and maracas.

Auditions for middle school choir will be held the first week of school, and all interested students are encouraged to attend. Choir currently meets  on Wednesdays at recess and Thursdays from  12:50-1:35, and students need to maintain at least a "C" average and be prepared to make up any work they miss. Choir is a great opportunity for students who enjoy singing, and we have fun as we prepare for the Christmas Pageant, Arts Night, Graduation, and several masses throughout the year, as well as other events, on occasion.

I'd like to take this opportunity to acknowledge our 8th grade choir members who just graduated: Ava, Emma, Kayla, and Ngoc Thuy, who sang with us for three years, and Jonise, who sang with us for the last two years.  These young ladies really added to the group - they always tried their best and helped in more ways than I can count.  We will miss you all! I'd also like to thank Mrs. Sarah Campbell for substituting for me while I was out on maternity leave with my son Aaron, who was born  March 28.  She is a fantastic teacher, and I know the students really enjoyed working with her. I hope you all have a wonderful summer, and I look forward to seeing everyone at the end of August!

Grant Update

Thank You Westfield Bank !

We extend a huge thank you to Westfield Bank for awarding St. Michael's Academy a grant in the amount of $5,000 to support our document camera program.  We are deeply grateful for their continued support of our mission.

The Westfield Bank Future Fund which was established in 2002, focuses mainly on the needs of children in the community. We applaud Westfield Bank for supporting our efforts to maintain the highest level of academic excellence for our students and helping to shape tomorrow's leaders.

Last Day of School

  Last Day of School Details

As you know, Wednesday is our last day of school. We invite family and friends to share our last day of school Mass beginning at 9:30 a.m. Immediately following Mass, the awards ceremony will be held.

At the conclusion of the awards, all students will be coming back to the school to pick up their report cards and remaining things.  You are welcome to take your child home at that time.

If you are picking up in the carlines, we will begin dismissing at 11:30 a.m.

Have a GREAT summer!

Graduation

Grade 8 Graduates

In typical style, our 8th grade students made us proud during graduation this week.  With style and grace, 34 St. Michael's Academy students received their diplomas, performed a beautiful version of "Lord, I Need You" and received a standing ovation at the conclusion of the Mass.

Of particular note were the two students who were chosen to speak on behalf of their class.  Jasmine, who has been at SMA for only 2 years and Regina, who has been at SMA since preschool, spoke very eloquently about the difference St. Michael's Academy has made in their lives and the lives of their classmates.

Congratulations Class of 2017!

Grade 8 Awards

Grade 8 Awards

And speaking of the graduating 8th grade students, the 8th grade awards ceremony was held the day before graduation day. The ceremony began with the students dedicating the yearbook to retired teacher, Miss Carol Brown and presented her with a lovely bouquet of flowers.

Congratulations to all the students receiving awards. There was a consistent message with every award category and that was that ALL the students deserved awards for their hard work and determination.

The recipients of the St. John Bosco Award this year was Tyrone Wolf and the St. Frances Cabrini Award went to Michelle Vu.  These two awards are voted upon by their fellow students and always hold a special place in the recipient's heart.

Kindergarten

Kindergarten Closing Ceremony

Well...they made it!  We are talking about our kindergarten students who had their closing ceremony today and have finished up their school year. Suits and ties and pretty dresses and bows could be seen as the students dressed in their "Sunday best" for the occasion.  They delighted the audience with music and song and then enjoyed refreshments afterwards with their families.

Field Days

Students Have Field Days

The students in Grades, PreK, Kindergarten, 1, 5, 6, and 7 had their field days this week.  Here are a few photos from the fun!

Food For Thought
