SCLSNJ's ten Library branches will be closed  Sunday, June 18, 2017 in observance of Father's Day. All branches will reopen as scheduled on Monday, June 19.
Rebecca Cordisco Named 2016-17 Counselor of Somerset County by NJSCA

Rebecca Cordisco, a counselor at both Sunnymead Elementary School and Triangle Elementary School,  has been named the 2016-2017 Counselor for the County of Somerset County by the New Jersey School Counselors Association (NJSCA) for her dedication and service to the Hillsborough School District. 

Ms. Cordisco, who has been a member of the Hillsborough School District faculty since 2014, was selected for this honor because of her ability to deliver an effective school counseling program which focuses on academic development, career counseling, and personal/social support.  Ms. Cordisco further distinguished herself by proving to be a leader of systemic change, an advocate for students, and a collaborative professional who seeks the success of the "whole" student in school and in life.

Sunnymead Elementary School and Triangle Elementary School are both proud to have Ms. Cordisco as their Counselor of the County.
  
At the June 13th Township Committee Meeting, the Mayor and the Hillsborough Township Committee recognized Ms. Cordisco for her achievement and thanked her for her dedication to the youth of Hillsborough.
Hillsborough Township's 2017 Independence Day Celebration & Fireworks Set for Saturday, July 1st
Festivities Start @ 5 pm - Auten Rd. Intermediate School;  Shuttle Buses @ Hillsborough High School;  (Rain date is Sunday, July 2nd)

Mayor Carl Suraci announced at Tuesday's meeting that the Hillsborough Independence Day Fireworks Celebration will be held on Saturday, July 1st.
 
This years celebration will feature:
  • Fireworks
  • Food Tent
  • Free inflatable amusements available from 5 pm to 8 pm:  Dunk Pit Basketball, Castle Fun Center, Family Fun Slide, Pirate Island Obstacle Course
  • Free Dunk Tank
  • Pay to Play Boardwalk Games
  • DJ for musical entertainment from 5 pm to 9 pm
 
The food tent will include local delights for purchase. Refreshments will include pizza, chicken, hamburgers, hot dogs, kettle corn and more.  
 
The festivities begin at 5 pm at the Auten Road Intermediate School field. Shuttle busses will be available, beginning at 5 pm, from the Hillsborough High School parking lot.
 
The rain date is Sunday, July 2nd.
 
"We look forward to seeing you all there," concluded Mayor Carl Suraci during the announcement.
Affinity Federal Credit Union Hillsborough Rewards Credit Card Program Spring 2017 Grant Awards

Eight different non-profit organizations received grant  awards through the Hillsborough Rewards Visa Credit Card Program at a recent Township Committee Meeting. Representatives from the organizations were present to accept the ceremonial check presented by Mayor Carl Suraci and the members of the  Credit  Card Advisory Committee. The total amount  awarded was $7,384.80. Since the inception of the program, nearly $70,000 in grants to community based youth, senior and local non-profit organizations have been  awarded. Four of the recipients were featured in last week's eNews and the remaining four are pictured below.

Business Summit Deemed an Overwhelming Success
Building Strong Partnerships with the Hillsborough Business Community

Hillsborough Township recently hosted a Business Summit at the Peter J. Bondi Building from 8:30 am to 10:30 am, which was open to members of the Hillsborough Business Community.
 
Township Administrator, Anthony Ferrera kicked off the event, welcoming guests and explaining the premise behind holding such an event.  "We are here to assist you, the business community and the best way for us to know how better to serve you is to hear directly from the business community," stated Ferrera in his opening comments.
 
Administrator Ferrera was followed by Business Advocate, David Kois.  Kois outlined the agenda for the morning session, which lasted just over two hours.  Following registration and networking, presentations were made by various Department Heads that impact the business community including the Township Clerk, the Planning and Zoning Official, the Assistant Engineer, the Health Inspector, the Chief Fire Marshal and the Construction Official.  After the presentations, there was a roundtable breakout session where individuals were afforded the opportunity to ask specific questions of the Township Officials.

Registration Now Open for Recreation Programs

Summer Camp Registration
Summer Recreation Camp registrations are currently being accepted.  Camps for 5 to 11-year-olds are held at Auten Road Intermediate and Amsterdam Schools.  Camp for 12 to 14-year-olds will be held at Hillsborough Middle School.  Tiny Camp for 4 and 5-year-olds will be at Hillsborough Elementary School.  Camps begin on Monday, June 26th and run for 8 weeks through August 18th.  Information and registration are available on the Parks & Recreation website.

Coupons for access to drop off at the Auten Road Facility are available at the Hillsborough Township Department of Public Works (DPW) office, located at 21 East Mountain Road, Monday through Friday, 7 am to 3 pm.  
  • Coupons are distributed on a first come first serve basis  
  • First available date is August 5th

Shop Hillsborough Rebates to be Included in Q3 Tax Bills

The 3rd quarter tax bills will be mailed at the end of June and will include the Shop Hillsborough credits for those residents who have taken advantage of the program.  

This year, 908 property owners will see credits totaling $24,776.45 on their tax bills.

Hillsborough  UNICO  Accepting Applications for Miss  UNICO  2017

A pplicants must fit the following criteria:
  • The young woman must be at least 50% Italian
  • Must be a resident of Hillsborough, NJ
  • Must be continuing her education
  • Must be between the ages of 18 to 25 years old
  • Must be comfortable speaking in public
  • Must learn the Motto and purpose of UNICO
  • Must attend the: Hillsborough Rotary Fair Special Needs Day in August, 2017 
  • Must be able to attend John Basilone Parade in Raritan, Sunday, Sept. 24, 2017
  • The successful applicant will be invited to attend: Annual Comedy Night Fundraiser.
  • The successful applicant will provide assistance, however possible, with Comedy Night Fundraiser
Applications must be received no later than June 30, 2017

Parents who host teenage drinking parties or allow underage adults to drink in their home need to know the consequences of the law.  
  • Fact #1 - It is illegal in NJ to serve alcohol to anyone who is under the legal drinking age of 21 (NJSA 2C:33-17a).
  • Fact #2 - It is illegal in NJ to make your home or property available for the purpose of allowing anyone who is under the legal drinking age of 21 a place to consume alcohol (NJSA 2C:33-17b).
  • Fact #3 - Any person who serves or makes alcohol available to a person under the legal drinking age of 21 is subject to a $1,000 fine and up to 180 days in jail per person served. Parents can be held civilly liable even if they are not present during the time of the party (NJSA 2C:33-17).
  • Fact #4 - If serving an underage person alcohol results in injury, the adult may be charged with Endangering the Welfare of Children, and may be subject to a fine of up to $15,000 and up to 5 years in state prison (NJSA 2C:24-4).
  • Fact #5 - New Jersey Law imposes civil liability on social hosts who serve alcohol to anyone under the legal drinking age of 21 who is subsequently involved in an incident causing injury or death.
  • Fact #6 - A social host may be sued for up to two years after an incident that occurs resulting in injury or death. As the result of a lawsuit, your house, car, and bank accounts may be seized and future wages may be garnished.
Grill Safety

There's nothing like outdoor grilling. It's one of the most popular ways to cook food. But, a grill placed too close to anything that can burn is a fire hazard. They can be very hot, causing burn injuries. 
  • Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors.
  • The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches.
  • Keep children and pets away from the grill area.
  • Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill.
  • Never leave your grill unattended.

Opiates & Marijuana Raise Risk Potential for Families

This highly-acclaimed workshop for parents and professionals will provide an overview of the impact opiates and marijuana extractions are having on adolescent behavior. Participants will learn how these substances are raising the risk potential for every family.
  
Somerset County Freeholder Brian D. Levine invites adults age 18 and over to learn what every parent and professional is up against at this free workshop on  Tuesday,  June 20 .  The program will be held from  6  to 8 p.m. in the multi-purpose room at the  Hillsborough Municipal Building, located at 379 South Branch Road.

Volunteers Sought at Hillsborough Senior Center

Looking to donate some of your time? Freeholder Brian D. Levine invites residents to volunteer at the Hillsborough Senior Center, located at 339 South Branch Road.  The center needs people who are willing to greet clients, pack or serve meals and lead classes.

Seeking More Greeters!

A welcoming smile and helpful demeanor are attributes of the volunteers who are sought to greet guests at the main entrance, direct them to sign in and answer questions. The hours are 9:30 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. on a weekday. The center is also looking for volunteers who are willing to be on call as last-minute fill-ins.
You Can Help Curb Hunger in Somerset County!

Even though Somerset County is known for its affluence, food insecurity for children and adults is an enduring issue. Freeholder Director Peter S. Palmer is urging residents to help change that by supporting the 23rd annual Curbing Hunger Month food drive.

State Sen. Kip Bateman, members of the Somerset County Board of Chosen Freeholders, and food bank supporters gathered at the Food Bank Network of Somerset County to launch this year's program, which will help boost food supplies at the Franklin Township Food Bank as well as other local food pantries serving Somerset County residents.
