YOUTH CONNECTIONS

2017
Dear Boys & Girls Club of the Redwoods Supporter:
http://givebgc.org/
Each summer in America, an estimated 43 million children in the U.S. miss out on expanded learning opportunities that could prevent them from falling behind. During summer, most youth lose about two months' worth of math skills. Low-income youth also lose more than two months' worth of reading skills, while their middle-class peers make slight gains.
Summer learning losses can stack up from year to year, causing low-income children to fall further and further behind, ultimately endangering their chances of high school graduation. More than half of the achievement gap between lower- and higher-income youth can be explained by unequal access to summer learning opportunities.      Please consider supporting the Club with a contribution that helps us curb summer learning loss every day right here on the North Coast.

MemorableMoments

California Youth Court Summit
The conference took place on the campus of University of Redlands, thereby exposing our teens to the reality of potential college attendance. Through workshops, advanced trainings, and presentations, the Summit is a time for our students to learn about how to enhance our local juvenile justice system and give them an opportunity to explore potential careers in the legal field. This is important as there are few opportunities in our rural County for formal law-related career exploration. Four youth representatives from Humboldt were among the 300 attendees at this year's annual conference.

Pony Express Days
Our McKinleyville Teen Center members and staff attended the 49th Annual Pony Express Days!  This was our first time as participants in the event where our Keystone members sold snow-cones to combat the unusual Humboldt heat.  T he event was huge, our turn out was fant astic, and we look forward to knocking it out of the park next year!

Eureka Teen Center Members Volunteer
Our leadership youth are volunteering two hours a week at the Family Resource Center to help prepare lunches for Food for People.  Food for People's Children's Summer Lunch Program operates June through August when school (and school lunch) is out.

Clubhouse Family Night
Our Clubhouse Family Night is sponsored by the CalFresh program. Every month our Nutrition Club prepares, cooks and serves a healthy meal to members and their families. To kick off summer, these young ladies sliced and diced fresh fruit, roasted zucchini and yellow squash, as well as grilled turkey burgers and chicken breasts.

Congratulations Graduates!
We hosted three different graduation parties; one at the Clubhouse for our 5th graders, one at our Eureka Teen Center for our 8th and 12th graders and one at our McKinleyville Teen Center for our 8th and 12th grade youth. All members participated in fun filled activities and all graduates received candy leis.
FeaturedProgram

Summer Brain Gain

Summer Brain Gain is comprised of one-week modules with fun, themed activities for elementary school, middle school, and high school students that are aligned with Common Core anchor standards. Supported by Disney, each module takes a project-based learning approach: youth engage in a process of learning through discovery, creative expression, group work and a final project or production. The focus of the program is to directly combat summer learning loss, which can take away almost two months worth of learning. As a result, kids develop higher-order thinking skills through the Summer Brain Gain modules while staying on track for the coming school year.
