From Apple:
"Malware is malicious software, which includes viruses, worms, trojan horses, and other programs that can harm your Mac or your privacy. Malware can be installed when you download items from email, messages, and websites."
What Apple tells you to do about it:
"Avoid opening items from websites and email messages unless you are certain that they come from a legitimate, trusted source. If you are uncertain about the source, delete the item. You can always download it again later, after you make sure it isn’t malware."

What Jodi tells you to do about it: Telling you to not open things and try again later is no information at all as far as I am concerned. You need to do much more than that to keep yourself safe.
- Upgrade to Sierra: Sierra (Mac OS 10.12.5) is stable and has safeguards within it to keep you safe on the Internet. High Sierra will be here in the Fall (Mac OS 10.11) If you want to use Tech, you must keep up with it.
- If your Mac is older and won't accept Sierra (2009 or earlier) get a new Mac: or consider getting rid of your Mac and replacing it with a new iPad Pro which is much more secure because you can only get things through the App store.
- Don't download anything from the Internet: This is how you get bad stuff on your Mac. Sites can be spoofed. You will think the you are on the legitimate site and it is a knock off. Download something from these sites and I can guarantee that you'll pick up something nasty!
- Don't surf Porn. The is where you get Tech Support Malware. It will take over Safari, telling you that they are Apple and scream that you have a virus and to call their number to fix it. All for $200. You lose, they win!
- Don't try to download sports videos: Nothing is free and it all has consequences.
- Don't buy anything using Safari. Get the Amazon App on your iPhone or iPad and buy from there. The App is safe, your Mac is not. What ever store you shop at, there is an App for that! Apple has vetted every App. Safari on your Mac is the wild, wild west as far as security.
- Don't call so called Printer Tech Support: I have has so many people get hit by these. You think you are calling HP Tech support after you googled the number on the Internet and you get transfered to someone in India that can't speak english and wants $200 to help you! Printers are throw away items. Get a new one for $100.
- If you are not sure what you are doing, don't do it.
