Welcome to the Eat Right Be Fit Live Well monthly link roundup.

Each week I read many interesting articles relating to nutrition, fitness and wellness. Here are some of my favorites from the past month. While every article may not be relevant to your personal circumstance, I hope at least one will spark your interest and provide you with a healthy tip you can incorporate into your daily routine.

Best,

Jeannie

Want to Lose Weight? You Should Stop Counting Calories:
Great article on why counting calories doesn't work. To lose weight and establish a healthy relationship with food, STOP COUNTING THEM PLEASE. Eat whole foods, replace refined flours and added sugars with healthy fats like avocados, salmon, tuna, olive oil and nuts/seeds and don't forget your veggies!
(Health.com)

Beat Cravings With These Foods:  Prevent the munchies with these foods/suggestions. (Cleanplates.com)

Exercise versus caffeine: Which is your best ally to fight fatigue?  Exhausted and relying on coffee to boost your energy and improve your focus? You may want to consider a short bout of exercise instead. Best of both worlds? Take the stairs to get your java ...  (Harvard School of Public Health)

Just One Drink Raises the Risk of Breast Cancer:  Love your wine, beer or mixed drink? If you're concerned about breast cancer, you may want to reconsider how often you imbibe. (WSJ)

Pediatricians Say No Fruit Juice in Child's First Year:  This is a huge step in the right direction but let's not stop here. Juice is NOT a healthy food for any of us. Treat it like nature's soda and drink it sparingly,  4-6oz 1-2 times a week at most.  (NY Times)

7 Healthy Proteins To Amp Up Your Salad:  There's nothing more delicious than a salad for lunch or dinner. To make leafy greens satisfying and tasty add a variety of these ingredients and of course an abundance of  seasonal veggies. (Drweil.com)

Gluten: A Benefit or Harm to the Body?  If you're forgoing whole grains, please reconsider!!! 2-3 servings (1/2 cup cooked or 1 slice of 100% whole wheat or whole grain bread is a serving) is needed for optimal health. The perception that whole intact grains cause weight gain and inflammation is ABSURD. It's the type (processed vs. intact) and the amount that get us in trouble. (Harvard School of Public Health)

Timing meals later at night can cause weight gain and impair fat metabolism:  Research is starting to confirm what we've known instinctively for years. Late night eating is bad for your health and waistline. I encourage you to eat the majority of your calories during the day and avoid eating after 8PM. (Science Daily)

No Coke and Pepsi, Adding Fibre and Pro-Biotics Doesn't Make Liquid Candy Healthy:  Please do not be fooled by these false health claims. Adding probiotics and/or isolated fiber to sugary or diet drinks does NOT make them healthy. (Weighty Matters)

4 ways to boost your energy naturally with breakfast:  PLEASE don't skip breakfast. It's the most important meal. To ensure yours is healthy, follow these guidelines.  (www.Harvard.Health.edu)

Top 10 Sources of Sodium:  Concerned about your blood pressure? Need to reduce your sodium intake? Eat these foods sparingly. (CDC.gov)

Why Everything We Know About Salt May NOT Be Wrong:  A must read for those of you that took the NY Times article questioning the dangers of excessive salt to heart. Dr. David Katz lays out the facts. Put down the salt shaker before you read. (Huffington Post)

'Healthy' obese people still at higher risk of cardiovascular disease events than general population:    Can you be clinically obese but healthy? The latest research suggests not. Being overweight increases your risk for heart disease and stroke, among other chronic conditions. (Sciencedaily.com)

More Than 10 Percent of World's Population Is Obese, Study Finds:  This makes me sad. Obesity in the majority of people can be avoided. More often than not readily available, cheap processed food is the culprit. Making healthy food affordable and available to all is a must if we want to solve the obesity epidemic in this country and around the world. (NY Times)

Run for your (long) life:  While all cardio exercise will improve your health and extend your life, none is as effective as running. Read this article to see just how little you have to jog to reap the benefits. (Harvardhealth.edu)
