Ideas from Our Neighborhoods

MessageOver the past month Neighborhood Services staff has been hosting workshops to qualify residents to apply for a Neighborhood Initiative Grant. From one cycle to the next, these workshops are not only a venue for our team to explain the grant program, but also an opportunity for us to hear about the current concerns facing our neighborhoods - and the innovative solutions they are proposing to address those concerns. Some of the new topics discussed this round have included extra-curricular education opportunities for at-risk students, English classes for adult speakers of other languages, creation of an oyster bed, community holiday light displays, and seminars on legal matters facing HOA boards. Whether these projects move forward through the grant program or not, we appreciate that you take time to think about making our community a better place. Thank you for sharing your passions and ideas with us!

ChallengeThe Neighborhood Challenge encourages residents to become more involve d with  t heir neighbors.Finding common ground is easy when you literally share it - so start a conversation with someone nearby. Discuss what you like about your neighborhood and what you would like to see changed. Take it a step further and invite that person to join you in hosting or attending a neighborhood meeting, where that conversation can  continue with additional residents.
Item I2: We have regularly-scheduled neighborhood meetings, at least quarterly (5 points).
Item I3: We have a Vision Plan that establishes our goals, and the actions required of us to meet those goals (5 points).

Civics
CivicsDid you know Sarasota County offers a free course that brings residents "behind-the-scenes" of their local government? If you didn't, than you'll be amazed by the many other county facts you have yet to learn! The next session of the course, called Civics 101 , will run July 27 through September 14. (P.S. Attending the course can also count for Neighborhood Challenge points!)

Neighborhood Initiative Grants

GrantsOn June 7 the Board of County Commissioners voted to approve funding for nine Neighborhood Initiative Grant projects. Congratulations to the recipients! You can watch (video) or read (packet) about the projects, which were Item 2 on the agenda.

ProjectsThe Arbors Mobile Home Owners Association, Inc. closed their  grant in June. The energy conservation project received $3,209 from the grant program to replace nearly 40 street lights with LED fixtures. This was the first project of its kind to go through the grant program. What a bright idea!

Low retention pond
Neighbors Ask
I'm concerned our storm water system is not functioning correctly. The last few months our retention pond was not much more than a puddle - mostly dirt, and the fish were gone. Now that we've received rain, the pond is starting to fill but I also see water in nearby ditches and pooling in some spots of the road. Should I report this?

While this question would need to be addressed on a case-by-case basis, in general the experiences described are in line with expected performance. It is normal for water levels to fluctuate with rainy and dry seasons; Florida's flora and fauna have been suited to those circumstances for centuries. Most storm water ditches will not hold water for more than a few days after a heavy rain (of course, if it rains again within that time, the water will stay longer).
