Happy Fourth Of July

More pets go missing around the 4th of July than any other time of year.

Please take time to ensure your pet is safe during the celebration week

All the things we humans enjoy about the Independence Day aren't necessarily as much fun for our four-legged friends.
Award Recognition
Congrats to our own Cindy Marques winning "Everyday Hero" in Colorado! Cindy is MABTR's Colorado Event Coordinator.
Cindy's hardwork, dedication and love for the Boston breed has allowed MABTR's presence be known in CO in great measures and across surrounding states.

Her objective is not to just help raise funds for our medical bills but to also create awareness of rescue efforts and the existence of MABTR in order to build our volunteer, foster and sponsor base. Cindy does not do all this for fame or recognition, but instead because of her commitment to helping dogs.

Cindy's impact has played a large role in our success and no words can explain how blessed we are to have her part of the family.   Thank you Cindy!!!

Fourth of July Safety Tips

Loud, crowded fireworks displays are no fun for pets, who can become frightened or disoriented by the sound. Please resist the urge to take them to Independence Day festivities, and opt instead to keep them safe from the noise in a quiet, sheltered and escape-proof area at home.

This time of year is fun for most humans; however for our pets it is a nightmare.  Watch your pet's signs of distress.  Many dogs go missing during this time of year where they can land in the wrong hands, get hurt, or worse, killed.

Tips to providing a safe and comfortable environment during these loud days
  • Keep your pets indoors.  Make sure that the whereabouts of your dog are known before opening any doors to the outside
  • Allow your pet to find a safe place in the house - this may be your bedroom closet, under the bed, the basement
    • consider leaving the TV or radio on to help wash out the loud bangs of the fireworks
  • Keep alcohol away from your pets as hops are deadly
  • Keep your pets away from firework displays.  It may look cute that your dog is going after the fireworks but this can cause injury
  • Keep a collar or harness on your pet 24/7 with proper identification should they get out of the house
  • Oils, candles, insect coils and other citronella-based repellants are irritating toxins to pets. The result of inhalation can cause severe respiratory illnesses such as pneumonia, and ingestion can harm your pet's nervous system.
  • Be prepared and not upset to find potty accidents. Do not force your pet outside if he does not want to go due to the loud noises
The safest and best bet for celebrating this Fourth of July with your pets is to exclude them from holiday festivities.
...and then they went BOOM!

While we might love the beautiful fireworks displays when celebrating the fourth of July, we need to remember that many of our pets find the related explosions very scary.  These same pets usually find thunder scary as well and unless you have a sound proof room in your home, you cannot isolate your pet from these noises, so you then need to find the best solution to manage the situation.

First, do whatever possible to bring your pet inside because the building will dampen the sound somewhat AND almost eliminate the opportunity for your scared pet to run away in fear.  When left outside in a yard that they may not escape in normal situations, they may make extraordinary efforts when terrified of these noises.  Then ensure they are in a safe place within your home; they will usually try to find a small place to hide so if under a piece of furniture, make sure it is free of electric cords or other things they could get tangled in.  Try to give them their favorite toy (for resting times), blanket or bed.  Let them go to where they feel safe, do not confine them in a small space like a crate because they may feel the need to escape and injure themselves.

Always, talk to your pet and assure them that they are safe, but do so using your normal, calm voice.  Do not use baby talk or go on and on that they'll be ok, because this higher pitch and rambling will usually lead them to think something is wrong and they should be concerned.

There are several possible remedies that you can be used to help calm the dog in these situations:
Noise distraction - Play TV or music in the room with the dog; depending on how loud the fireworks or thunder this can sometimes distract the dog from the booms
Thundershirt - Tight fitting garment that wraps around the dog applying continuous, even pressure on the dog's torso which alleviates anxiety; for this to work effectively it must be used prior to stress inducing situations for the dog to associate with calm (follow instructions provided)
Over the counter remedies - Bach's Rescue Remedy is an herbal supplement that has been very successful for alleviating storm related anxiety and the fear from firework noise
Prescription medications - Prescription medications are available for more severe cases; most act as sedatives and affect your dog's behavior
Behavior modification - over time, play recordings of fireworks and storms starting  with a lower volume and short time period, steadily increasing volume and time to decrease sensitivity; some will also offer treats trying to relate sounds to positive experiences.

Please keep your pets in mind as you plan your July 4th and other spring and summer activities.  While we like to include our pets and take them with us whenever we can, perhaps leaving them in a kennel is actually kinder than taking them camping at the lake when you know fireworks will be going off non-stop every evening. -- Susie Sutton

MABTR Alumni - Jack

Hola!  Mi nombre es Jack.  I'm eight years old, and I was born in Argentina where I lived with my half-brother and enjoyed the Spanish culture and language.  When I was a couple years old, my owner moved us to the USA, where my brother and I took BSL (Barking in a Second Language) courses and became US citizens.  After a while, my owner had to give us up because of traveling for his job. I hope my brother found a good home.  I sure did!

Gracias to Jennifer and Angie of MABTR for hooking us up!

Now, I live with my forever family, Mike and Sue, in southwest Colorado.  I'm their only pet and get loads of attention including belly rubs whenever I want.  They are really impressed with how well-behaved I am. We have 35 acres of piƱon and juniper forest and I love our beautiful trail for daily walks.  You wouldn't believe all the amazing smells!   My only complaint is that Mike doesn't always respond fast enough when I want to play ball, so I have to give him a few choice barks in Spanish to get him moving.

I'm also enjoying my new family's tradition of hunting for "hide 'n seek treats" after dinner every night.  I get to practice sitting and "staying" while they hide two different treats somewhere in the house.  Then, they say "okay!" And off I go, sniffing exuberantly until I find each of the treats.

It's a great life.  I love them, and I can tell, they sure love me!
Su amigo, Jack

P.S. Yay, I heard my brother found a great home, too!  Thanks, MABTR, for your wonderful work helping us doggies and our happy humans!
Adoptable Dog of the Month

Hi, my name is Gizzy .   I am a 4-year-old Boston MIX and weigh 14 pounds.  I need  a new home because my owners could no longer care for me . I am being fostered in St. Louis, MO.

I have had quite a ride up to this point.  Due to my shyness, I have been passed around to different homes a bit.  I am on the mend and coming out of my shell in my foster home!  My foster mom has been really patient with me, letting me do things in my own time.  I used to spend a good part of my day hiding under the furniture, but now I confidently lounge on the furniture with my foster mom and brothers.  I like to go outside for walks and I walk nicely on my leash.  I approach humans to be pet now and I love my belly rubbed.  I also know that going in my crate means cookie time!

I am a sweet and smart girl that just needs a little time to warm up in my new home.  If you have love and a little patience, I will melt your heart!

Tips to Moving with a Dog

While moving with pets is a stressful time for you...it's undoubtedly just as stressful for your pets.  Here are some tips to make moving into your new home as stress-free as possible for everyone in your family, especially your pets!

I just recently moved myself and found the following to be great resources that I would like to share with you.
It's such a struggle moving with dogs sometimes.  People seem to always think they're gonna chew on everything.  This article Moving with Pet helped me move him.  It gives advice on how to adjust your pet to the area as you're moving and how to keep them calm during the move so it's less hard on them. So, this helped a lot with getting him to relax and actually inspired me to get him one of those anxiety vests; it's precious - he loves it.

I swear by this  Pet Resume Guide.  I just moved into an apartment where the landlord originally said no dogs but I found this and filled it out and got in. It helps you create a resume for your pet with fill in the blanks and fill in all their little quirks which I thought was really silly but I mean I got in.  It helped me introduce Shadow to my landlord and helped her realize that Shadow wasn't going to tear up the apartment and bark constantly, he's actually deaf so he's pretty chill unless you spook him. -by Britney A.

Ask Jennifer

Q: My dog rubs his bottom on my carpet, yet I see nothing wrong with his back end which would cause him to want to do that?

A: Dogs have anal glands that are located inside the anus.  You cannot see them.  Anal glands are also referred to as the stink glands.  Every dog has a unique smell. Anal glands are in place because they are effectively how dogs recognize each other and why they sniff every new dog they meet at the back end rather than the front.
Anal glands are released every time your dog poops.  However they can get impacted.  This causes discomfort for your dog and as a result he drags his bottom on the floor in hopes to give him some relief, which will not work.

This is not something to ignore, as an impacted anal gland can rupture causing more problems for the dog and added expenses for you.

A vet tech or professional groomer can express anal glands.  So call them today for an appointment.  Note that some dogs need assists on a regular basis.

Reasons anal glands can get impacted
1. Stress can cause a dog to have loose stools.  It takes a firm stool to release the glands.
-- Treatment: Add a tablespoon of canned pumpkin twice a day to your dog's diet
2. Change in diet can result in soft stools.
-- Give a diet two weeks and if no improvement the food is not right for them.
-- If your dog has always had loose stools you should consult your vet about Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

Other reasons a dog may drag his bottom on the floor
1.  Worms, in particular tapeworms, can cause itching around the anus. You may have noticed the small white worm segments that look like rice grains in his stools or around his bottom. They are very itchy indeed and are a common cause of scooting.
-- Treatment: Drontol, dewormer, prescribed by the vet.

2. Fleas find your dog's rear end to be a popular spot to gather, and they too will make him itchy around his rump. Some dogs are actually allergic to flea saliva and one bite from a flea will make their skin red and inflamed. To add insult to injury, fleas spread tapeworm so if your dog is itchy from fleas, he'll soon be itchy from tapeworm too.
-- Treatment: A bath with flea shampoo followed by Frontline Flea Preventative. The dog needs to be completely dry before applying Frontline.  Once applied a bath cannot be given for 48 hours.

Share your travel plans with MABTR and
in return help out a Boston
As many of you know MABTR covers 13 states. 75% of our adoptions occur between foster homes and adopters in different states, requiring MABTR to set up a transport by car.  We do not fly our dogs.

Many of us travel for business or pleasure by car so we ask that you share with us your travel plan should you have room for a Boston to hitch a ride.

Just some examples, and not limited to, of routes completed.  Note that some routes are short distances where others a whole day:
  • Colorado Springs, CO to Cheyenne, WY
    • Omaha, NE to St Louis, MO
      • Omaha, NE to Boise, ID
        • Des Moines, IA to St Paul, MN
          • Kansas City, MO to Springfield, MO
            • ... the list goes on
Share with us your travel plans - even those scheduled in the future.
It is simple.  Just email luckypawpals@aol.com your starting and ending location, date(s) of travel, and your name and phone number.  We will file the travel schedule shared and if the need approaches we will contact you with details.

Most of our dogs ride well in cars without a crate, but if you require a crate we can supply one.

The doggies thank you for allowing them to hitch a ride!!!!!  Without drivers we would struggle moving our dogs closer to their forever homes.

Remember that you can write off at tax time your gas or mileage when transporting our Bostons.

We ask that you help us educate the public about their options when looking for a new pet. We appreciate the fact that you are not purchasing your pet from a pet store that sells lives animals, since 98% of all puppies in a pet store come from terrible situations such as puppy mills. For more information on puppy mills visit our site and read all you need to know about puppy mills.

AGE is just a number

I wish applicants would make personality and behavior priority when adopting a dog but the truth is that a majority are not even interested in learning about a dog if it is out of their age range.

Remember that just because a dog is young does not guarantee he/she will live to be 14. MABTR cannot promise anyone how long a dog will live. We unfortunately have experienced the loss of a life at a very young age unexpectedly.

MABTR is not prejudiced when it comes to rescuing. A life is precious no matter
