Doing Death Differently

What if rather that pushing death away we could entertain and value other kinds of knowledge and definitions of death? It has the potential to change the discussions that we have about the end of life, how we care for the dying, how we honor the dead, and how we support those living with loss.

Read more from Stephen Jones, our Community Education Program Coordinator, who shares his perspective on how the lessons of living well and dying are relevant at all stages of life.

"At Hospice of Santa Barbara" - A Poem by Bonnie Scot

Bonnie Scot, a former participant in our "Healing Through Poetry" support group, shared her poem "At Hospice of Santa Barbara" with us. "Listening to the poems of other writers and group participants stimulated creativity for me at a time when grief made it seem impossible," she said of the program. "The safety and artistic freedom in our meetings facilitated self-expression, and much to my surprise, being creative helped the process of healing."

We celebrate the students in our community who have recently graduated as we acknowledge that many are grieving the death of a family member who wasn't able to attend or a classmate who wasn't able to walk the stage with them. These milestones in the lives of our youth and young adults can be difficult days for those who have dealt with the loss of a loved one.

In our community, one in five children will experience the death of someone close to them by age 18; one in twenty children will experience the death of one or both parents before reaching adulthood.  HSB provides free professional support and coping tools for children, teens and their families that are essential for successful emotional growth and healing. Thank You!

Hospice of Santa Barbara thanks the following people for supporting our work:

Thank you to all the band members of "Triage" who played for our Volunteer Appreciation Party.  Scott Branch on guitar, Miche Osborne on vocals and Jess Crary on violin were fantastic!

Thank you to the SB Chicken Ranch and Santa Barbara Gift Baskets and Massage Green Spa for helping us out with the much-loved gift cards and baskets that were presented to volunteers at the Appreciation party.

Thank you to the "flower lady" who wants no notoriety but brings flowers to HSB, all because years ago, she tells me, HSB helped her father and family go through a hard time.

The Chamber of the Santa Barbara Region for featuring us as nonprofit of the month in June.
