Free CME in Destin
Has a medical/nursing/pharmacy student, PA, NP, resident, or fellow asked YOU for a clinical rotation yet?  Medical education is no longer confined to the halls of the hospitals or colleges, says Dr. John Mitchell, director of the Office of Mississippi Physician Workforce. Practically EVERYONE will be in an educator role at some point.
That's why the OMPW is offering free Faculty Development Workshops for MAFP members July 17 from 1:30 - 5:30 pm in Sandestin during the MAFP Annual Meeting. Attendees can earn up to 4 CME credits. The instructor for the two 2-hour sessions is Sheila Chauvin, PhD, MEd, Developer and Director of the Mississippi Statewide Medical Educator Development (MS MED) Program.
Simmons Congratulates High-School
Rural Medical Scholars in Starkville
This week, MAFP President Sue Simmons, MD, of Maben (pictured above at podium), addressed rising high-school seniors taking part in the Rural Medical Scholars (RMS) program at Mississippi State University, administered by the MSU Extension Service.
RMS is a 5-week school for young people interested in becoming family physicians and is conducted each summer on MSU's campus in Starkville. Scholars - who must qualify by having a high ACT score and recommendations from teachers - take two college-level pre-medical courses, shadow family physicians and take part in workshops to earn certification as Junior Master Wellness Volunteers.
Dr. Simmons spoke to the scholars during their year-end celebration lunch, which included faculty, staff and invited guests.
"The scholars learned that being a family physician is challenging, but rewarding at the same time and that hard work truly pays off," said Ann Sansing, Extension Instructor. "Most importantly, they learned that it is important to enjoy the career you choose."
