What is the Arctic Innovation Competition?

The JEDC has been a proud supporter of the  UAF Arctic Innovation Competition  (AIC) for almost 9 years. AIC is Alaska's original idea contest created by Dr. Ping Lan and launched in 2009.  The AIC is run by the UAF School of Management and currently awards $30,000 in cash prizes.

The AIC is easy to enter -- no prototype or business plan is required. Individuals and teams of all ages may enter and there is no entry fee.

The AIC submission deadline is Friday, September 22, 2017.
JEDC collaborates with the Downtown Business Association on Juneau's first Rain Paint installation

The Downtown Business Association infrastructure committee, with the help of the Juneau Economic Development Council, just completed Juneau's first rain paint design in downtown.  The completed design is English symbolism and word for 'rain' and the corresponding Tlingit symbolism and word for 'rain." Rain paint only appears when it rains and is invisible on the concrete when it's dry and we thought it was a fun and interesting way of embracing Juneau's rainy weather.

The idea is to have similar designs on the sidewalk of Franklin and Front Street in the various languages that are spoken in Juneau. The next two designs will be English/Tagalog and English/Russian.

Thank you to Docks & Harbors for letting us use a piece of sidewalk and to AK Litho for making the stencil for us.
Economic Indicator:
Gross Business Sales in Juneau by Business Category for 2016 show some ups and some downs

Preliminary data from the CBJ finance department shows that Juneau's gross business sales of $2,421 million in 2016 were down slightly from the record high of 2015, but sales are still above levels seen in the previous decade.

The category of "Other," which includes mineral sales, fuel companies, food suppliers, and wholesale equipment, among others, increased by $36 million (5 percent) over 2015, while the category of "Transportation and Freight," which includes tourism transportation, increased by $22 million (14 percent). Together, these two just equaled the $58 million (15 percent) decrease in sales by Contractors.  Retail sales and real estate sales also declined in 2016.
