HISTORY ON THE BRICKS, FORT WORTH STOCKYARDS
Courtesy of The North Fort Worth Historical Society
The Fort Worth Stockyards has had many success stories but has also had its share of tragedies as well. In addition to the 2 fires that ravaged the Stockyards in 1911; there were also many floods.

Flooding was almost a common occurrence in the Stockyards every time the Trinity River overflowed its banks. The worst flood that ever hit the area was on April 19, 1942. A flash flood hit the Stockyards in the evening and three hours later a seven foot high wall of water came down Marine Creek and flooded the yards a second time. Stockyards workers waded and swam through water trying to rescue animals but hundreds of horses, sheep and hogs were lost.
Photo Caption: Flood of 1942 in the Stockyards. This was the view from the porch of the Livestock Exchange Building.

The Stockyards are a wonderful recognition of Cattlemen and Cowboys steeped in the tradition  of the American West; a place today doing primarily the same thing we were doing over 100 years ago.
Cattle drives, rodeo, steam train, honky tonks, great places to shop and eat and more.

Thank you for taking the time to support our history and culture.

Sincerely,

Fort Worth Stockyards
