CGP and the Social Science Research Council (SSRC) announce the annual Abe Fellowship and Abe Fellowship for Journalists competitions. Please see our website for details on both programs and how to apply. Abe Fellowship applications are due September 1; Abe Fellowship for Journalists applications are due September 15.


The Japan Foundation is now accepting project proposals for the Performing Arts JAPAN (PAJ) touring and collaboration grants. Applications are due October 31. For details, please click here.


The Japan Foundation, New York seeks an Associate Program Officer for the Arts and Cultural Exchange program. This program promotes the introduction of Japanese arts and culture as well as exchanges between Japan and the United States. For details, please see the job description. Applications are due July 4.

Cultural Event

Southern Vermont Arts Center (Manchester, VT)

The Japan Festival will feature a wide range of Japanese traditional and family-friendly activities, including calligraphy, origami, ikebana, live koto music and Japanese festival food. This event is funded through the Center for Global Partnership's Education Grant program.

Discovery Center Museum (Rockford, IL)

Immerse yourself in this time-honored matsuri and make a wish, create traditional decorations, or put together a kite. Enjoy Japanese star stories and explore the night sky in the planetarium at the Tanabata Star Festival, which is held in conjunction with the exhibition Hello from Japan!, an interactive exhibit in which visitors enjoy learning about life in present-day Japan. The Tanabata Japanese Star Festival is supported through the JFNY Grant for Arts and Culture.

REPORT & PAST EVENT
June 11 - 16


The fourth cohort of the US-Japan Network for the Future Program concluded their week-long study trip in Tokyo and Kumamoto on June 17. During their stay, they had briefings and discussions on Japanese domestic and international issues with the Governors of Tokyo and Kumamoto, Diet members, leading policy experts including Prof. Makoto Iokibe (Prefectural University of Kumamoto) and Prof. Akihiko Tanaka (GRIPS), along with a visit to Yokosuka. Through these meetings, the participants expanded and deepened their networks. The group was accompanied by Advisory Committee members, Dr. Susan Pharr (Harvard University), Dr. Leonard Schoppa (University of Virginia) and Dr. Sheila Smith (Council on Foreign Relations). Mansfield Foundation board member Dr. Gerald Curtis joined the group in Kumamoto. This program is organized by the Mansfield Foundation and supported by CGP.
